Whiskymaker's Reserve No. 4

The taste has been discovered, and another whisky rises to the hall of single malt fame. Reserve No. 4, has been awarded this year’s title of the World’s Best Single Malt

On March 24, 2023, the world’s whisky community united in London and celebrated the 2022 Whisky Magazine Awards. As is customary, they announced the World Whiskies Awards and the Icons of Whisky global winners.

The Whisky Magazine Awards selects the best candidates in the industry – its people, places, and products. It honors excellence in every fabric, from bartenders to brand ambassadors, retailers to destination managers. Applauding those who have labored to produce and promote whisky.

Among these awards and honors, the magazine recognized the invaluable contribution of the Lakes Distillery’.  Starting as a Victorian farmstead, the Lakes labored hard and long to transform their products into world renowned whiskies.

The Award Selection Process

A panel made up of journalists and industry experts is used to select the winners each year. The selection process involves two rounds, the first of which is an elimination moment that selects the top 24 four global finalists.

Judges must taste each brand before casting their final votes. The whiskies are compared with each other, head-to-head with whiskies from Japan, Scotland, the UK, the US, and more.

The judges awarded The Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.4 as the “World’s Best Single Malt Whisky”.  The recognition puts Lakes Distillery among the best whisky producers in the world. Such companies as Glenmorangie, Bunnahabhain, Aberlour, Kavalan

The Lakes Distillery whisky maker, Dhavall Gandhi, felt ‘humbling to receive recognition for our whisky in the form of such an illustrious award.’

Kirsty Taylor is the Commercial Director at The Lakes. She said: “We were honored to be awarded The World’s Best Single Malt Whisky for The Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.4. To be a finalist alongside respected global brands such as Glenmorangie, ‘’

Distiller and COO leaving Ky. Peerless to create Eastern Light Distilling

“This is about far more than a single spirit brand. It’s about helping build Kentucky’s craft bourbon industry through a customized approach working hand in hand with craft distillers…”

Distiller and COO leaving Ky. Peerless to create Eastern Light Distilling

Eight years after helping found Kentucky Peerless Distilling, its COO, Cordell Lawrence, and its master distiller, Caleb Kilburn, are leaving the Louisville-based distillery to create their own, Eastern Light Distilling. According to a news release, ELD will be a contract distiller “supporting craft distiller like never before and making our bourbon heritage accessible to more Kentuckians.”

“Eastern Light is the culmination of a lifelong dream to see our state’s signature bourbon industry in my home of Eastern Kentucky,” Caleb Kilburn, master distiller at EDL, said in the release. Kilburn got his first and only job in distilling at Peerless before being named its master distiller two years ago. Along with owner Corky Taylor, he’s become one of the brand’s most recognizable faces. “This is especially important to me because it creates opportunity right here in our own community. It means the next kid from Eastern Kentucky with a dream of becoming a master distiller won’t have to leave home to find their start.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Lawrence is a spirits marketing veteran who’s worked on notable brands such as Jack Daniel’s, Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek, Laphroaig and Courvoisier.

“This is about far more than a single spirit brand. It’s about helping build Kentucky’s craft bourbon industry through a customized approach working hand in hand with craft distillers,” Cordell Lawrence, CEO of Eastern Light Distilling, said in the release. “We’re grateful to Governor Beshear, local officials in Morehead and Rowan County, and to everyone else who has helped us realize this dream of creating a unique and innovative concept to advance Kentucky’s time-honored bourbon industry and help new entrants access the thriving spirits marketplace.”

According to one news report, the distillery will produce up to 90,000 barrels a year. (For those doing the math at home, that’s around 3.5 million proof gallons a year, which is a lot of whiskey. And for fun comparisons, Green River’s output is about the same, Bardstown Bourbon Co. will make about 125,000 a year when its new stills start later this year, Heaven Hill bangs out 450,000 barrels a year, and when both stills are fully operational later this year, Buffalo Trace will produce 900,000 a year.)

Interestingly, the news comes roughly a year after Jane Bowie and Denny Potter (master of maturate and master distiller, respectively) left Maker’s Mark Distillery to start one of their own. Named J&D Distilling, it is located in Springfield, Ky., and is expected to be operational by 2024. After many years at Brown-Forman, Marianne Eaves left to become master distiller at then-start-up Castle & Key Distillery. She now leads her own consultancy. And after five years as master taster at Old Forester—and arguably the personality that reinvigorated that historic whiskey—Jackie Zykan left also to start her own consultancy.

Whether this signals a wave of established industry pros striking out on their own remains to be seen. What it certainly implies is there’s loads of investors eager to buy in to the whiskey business and attract the talent to do it for them.

Few of these stories of departure have happy endings, but thankfully, this one does. Peerless’s Taylor, who in addition to being the ever-genial host at his distillery, is a hardcore businessman who loves to compete. Despite that, in the classy gesture below, he wished success for two of his most important Peerless teammates.

“Caleb and Cordell have poured their hearts into Kentucky Peerless, and I am grateful for all they have done for our family and our brand,” said Corky Taylor, CEO of Kentucky Peerless. “We are thankful for their service and admire their entrepreneurial spirit. They should be proud of what we achieved together, and I am excited that they are claiming this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate Kentucky's craft distilling industry."

Wild Turkey’s upcoming release has us saying “YA MON”! It’s a historical moment. For the first time in the brand’s history, it is debuting a rum cask finished Bourbon. For the inaugural occasion, they are going big as this will officially be the 2023 MASTER’S KEEP “VOYAGE”.

Getting “wild” on the finish naturally fits the mantra as the Master’s Keep series, first launched in 2015, was born from Eddie Russell’s desire to push the boundaries of traditional bourbon-making by experimenting with aging techniques and finishes.

Crafted by Master Distiller Eddie Russell in a first-time collaboration with Dr. Joy Spence, the renowned Master Blender of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, this 106-proof expression of 10-year-old bourbon was finished with a secondary maturation period in Jamaican rum casks. It hits select shelves nationwide beginning early July.

“Every year, we look forward to the release of Master’s Keep as an opportunity to rethink what our bourbon can be,” says Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller Eddie Russell. “Creating Master’s Keep Voyage in collaboration with Dr. Joy Spence was a real privilege, and I think our shared passion for telling a story through our spirits comes through in this one-of-a-kind whiskey.”

Master’s Keep Voyage captures the hallmarks of both bourbon and rum making and reflects Eddie Russell and Dr. Joy Spence’s more than 80 years of combined experience in crafting exceptional spirits.

  • 10 Year Bourbon finished in Jamaica’s Appleton Rum Casks
  • Available nationwide starting early July
  • SPR $275

According to the brand, the journey began with Dr. Joy Spence hand selecting some of the finest casks from the iconic Jamaican rum house Appleton Estate – these casks previously held 14-year-old pot still rum and were chosen for their potential to best complement the bold top notes and rich caramel undertones of Wild Turkey’s extra-aged bourbons.

The casks then made the voyage to the Wild Turkey Distilling Co. in Lawrenceburg, KY, where Eddie Russell hand selected a batch of 10-year-old bourbon that had been aged in Wild Turkey’s classic No. 4 char barrels. The bourbon was finished in the rum casks in the heat of a Kentucky timber rickhouse, resulting in a tropically influenced American icon bursting with a palate of fruits, caramel and aged oak with a warm, long-lasting finish of chocolate and spice (per the brand).

“With Voyage, we set out to develop a spirit that allows the notes of the rum and bourbon to work in harmony,” said Appleton Estate Master Blender Dr. Joy Spence. “By aging Eddie’s hand-selected batch of 10-year-old bourbon in the finest casks we have at Appleton Estate, we were able to achieve a new level of flavor that gives whiskey and bourbon lovers a new way to enjoy their favorite drinks.”

The Master’s Keep series, first launched in 2015, was born from Eddie Russell’s desire to push the boundaries of traditional bourbon-making by experimenting with aging techniques and finishes. Each annual release in the collection is highly coveted and available in limited quantities.

Introducing Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage is a 10-year-old bourbon finished in Jamaican rum casks, marking the first rum cask finish in Wild Turkey’s history.

Introducing Wild Turkey Master's Keep Voyage

A LIMITED-EDITION CRAFT BOURBON PERFECTED WITH TIME IN JAMAICAN RUM CASKS

Wild Turkey, the renowned American bourbon brand, has announced the launch of its latest expression, Master's Keep Voyage, as part of its annual limited-edition series. Crafted by Master Distiller Eddie Russell in collaboration with Dr. Joy Spence, the esteemed Master Blender of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, this unique whiskey is a 10-year-old bourbon finished in Jamaican rum casks, marking the first rum cask finish in Wild Turkey's history. Master's Keep Voyage will be available at select retailers starting in July.

The release of Master's Keep Voyage represents an opportunity for Wild Turkey to redefine the possibilities of bourbon-making. Eddie Russell, Master Distiller of Wild Turkey, expressed his excitement about collaborating with Dr. Joy Spence, stating that their shared passion for storytelling through spirits is evident in this one-of-a-kind whiskey.

Master's Keep Voyage reflects the expertise of both Eddie Russell and Dr. Joy Spence, who have over 80 years of combined experience in crafting exceptional spirits. Dr. Spence selected the finest casks from Appleton Estate, known for their 14-year-old pot still rum, to complement the robust flavors and rich caramel undertones of Wild Turkey's extra-aged bourbons. These rum casks were then transported to the Wild Turkey Distilling Co. in Kentucky, where Eddie Russell handpicked a batch of 10-year-old bourbon aged in the distillery's classic No. 4 char barrels. The bourbon underwent a finishing period in the rum casks within the heat of a Kentucky timber rickhouse, resulting in a distinctively tropical-influenced American whiskey characterized by fruity notes, caramel, aged oak, and a warm, lingering finish of chocolate and spice.

Dr. Joy Spence, Master Blender of Appleton Estate, emphasized the goal of achieving harmony between the rum and bourbon flavors in Voyage. By aging Eddie Russell's carefully selected batch of 10-year-old bourbon in Appleton Estate's finest casks, a new level of flavor was attained, offering whiskey and bourbon enthusiasts an exciting way to savor their favorite spirits.

The Master's Keep series, initiated in 2015, was born out of Eddie Russell's desire to explore unconventional aging techniques and finishes in bourbon-making. Each release in the collection is highly coveted and produced in limited quantities.

Master's Keep Voyage will be available nationwide at selected retailers from July onwards, with a suggested retail price of $275 for a 750ml bottle. Wild Turkey and Appleton Estate encourage consumers to savor this exceptional whiskey responsibly and take the time to fully appreciate its unique qualities.

The Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame has announced that it will induct Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco on September 13th, 2023.
A native New Yorker who later adopted Louisville as his second home, Magliocco initially fell in love with Kentucky bourbon while bartending during college at Yale, where he was a Religious Studies major. After earning a JD from Harvard Law School, during which time he spent summers selling Kentucky bourbon and other spirits, Magliocco embarked on a full-time career in the spirits and wine business. One of his first industry jobs was at a distributor, where he reported to the company’s President R.C Wells, the former President of Four Roses.
Magliocco subsequently led the effort to develop Chatham Imports, the Manhattan-based spirits and wine supplier and eventual parent company of Michter’s Distillery. During the 1990s, a challenging period for the American whiskey industry, Magliocco teamed up with his mentor and adviser Richard Newman, the former President of Austin Nichols, to enter the bourbon business, which they both viewed as being only temporarily out of favor. While selling the brand during a summer job, Magliocco had grown familiar with Michter’s, a Pennsylvania-based whiskey company with a legacy stretching from the founding of a predecessor in 1753 until its bankruptcy in 1989. After the Michter’s brand name went abandoned, Magliocco spearheaded Chatham’s acquisition of the Michter’s trademark in the 1990s for $245 and set out to restart the historic brand with whiskey made in Kentucky, which he considered the best place in the world for bourbon.
Magliocco has played a role in the resurgence of American whiskey. “There is no one who believes more in the potential of the Kentucky bourbon category,” stated Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee. “I know I speak for our entire team when I say we are grateful for Joe’s unwavering support, which has enabled us to make decisions that prioritize making the highest quality whiskey every step of the way.” Michter’s Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson added, “Joe’s contributions will have a lasting impact on the Kentucky Bourbon industry and on how American whiskey is perceived around the world.”
Over the years, the Louisville-based Michter’s team assembled by Magliocco has made progress with the brand, which is now sold in all 50 United States and over 60 export markets. In its present form, Michter’s has two Louisville distilleries – Michter’s Shively Distillery and Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery – as well as a 205-acre farm and operations hub in Springfield, Kentucky. Magliocco joins Andrea Wilson, Michter’s Master of Maturation and Chief Operating Officer, as Michter’s second Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame member.
“Kentucky bourbon has thrived and reached its current level of success because of all the great people working in all the positions in our industry. I am humbled and deeply honored to be included among this year’s extraordinary inductees into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame,” remarked Magliocco.
Magliocco actively volunteers with schools and not-for-profit organizations. An Associate Fellow at Yale University’s Benjamin Franklin College, Magliocco serves as a trustee of The Frazier History Museum and The Fresh Air Fund, as well as a member of the Harvard Law School Dean’s Advisory Board. Magliocco splits his time between Louisville and New York. He works at Michter’s with a team that includes his son Matt Magliocco and his niece Katharine Magliocco.

Old Pulteney Turns To Pineau des Charentes For New Malt

Old Pulteney, fondly referred to as “The Maritime Malt,” is excited to launch its new range of whiskies in the United States market: The Coastal Series.

This collection invites enthusiasts on a global journey of discovery with Old Pulteney, offering four unique limited edition expressions. To create this special series, Old Pulteney collaborated with spirit producers from coastal locations across the globe, further maturing its beloved whisky in hand-selected coastal casks. These four new offerings introduce an exciting array of coastal flavors to the renowned ‘Maritime Malt.’

For the first time, Old Pulteney has matured its whisky in ex-Pineau des Charentes wine casks, incorporating the flavor nuances of the French coastline into The Maritime Malt. Notes of the iconic sweet aperitif, which originates from the Charente-Maritime region on France’s southwest coast, have been seamlessly intertwined with the northern flavors for which Old Pulteney single malt is celebrated. The result is the inaugural expression in The Coastal Series, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes.

Old Pulteney is a whisky shaped by its coastal home in Wick on the extreme northern reaches of the Caithness Coast in rural Scotland. Year after year, the casks breathe in the brisk North Sea air, imparting a distinctly briny flavor that encapsulates the essence of the sea.

With the same meticulous craftsmanship that characterizes all their expressions, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes represents the brand’s most innovative cask maturation to date. It introduces a lighter, sweeter layer atop the classic Old Pulteney foundation.

The whisky began its maturation in ex-bourbon casks before further maturation in hand-selected ex-Pineau des Charentes French oak casks, chosen by Stuart Harvey, the Master Blender. In these casks, the whisky gradually absorbs the delightful sweetness of the aperitif, creating a perfect counterpoint to Old Pulteney’s signature briny flavor and resulting in a beautifully balanced dram.

The expression evokes the warmth of sunny coastal days with sweet and light notes of candied oranges, warm spices, and creamy vanilla. A lingering finish unfurls to reveal hints of caramelized hazelnuts and ground spices. The flavor profile broadens in sweetness before slowly tapering off to a savory coastal minerality.

“We’re very pleased to introduce Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, the first in a new, exciting series by the brand. Old Pulteney’s past, present, and taste are influenced by its home by the sea on the Caithness Coast, and The Coastal Series beautifully explores cask maturations that highlight wonderful expressions influenced by their global coastal homes,” commented Malcolm Waring, Distillery Manager at Old Pulteney. “Our Pineau des Charentes expression is a beautifully light, fruity single malt that showcases both the flavors of our wonderfully matured spirit but balanced with the rich sweetness of the Pineau des Charentes, resulting in a truly exquisite expression.”

Presented in an elegant gold gift box that mirrors the hue of golden sands and adorned with a detailed illustration of the French coastline, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes will retail for $79.99 and be available later this summer in markets across the U.S.

“This whiskey was made with the collaboration of expert blenders, cooperages, and wine makers. We tasted weekly and chased flavors using whatever methods regulations allowed. This required close attention to the weather and changing between sunny or shaded parts of our facilities,” said Rare Hare Spirits’ Chief Operations Officer, Alex Moore, who oversaw the finishing process. “Extensive aging requires particular care to prevent over-oaking of a product. As with cognac, aging something for so long takes special attention to design and intention. It’s not a product you throw in a barrel and forget about.”

The name Lucky Bastard pays homage to Playboy's legacy in gaming, where the brand's captivating presence and influence have shaped unforgettable experiences. The limited-edition bottle is now available online for pre-sale for $599 at RareHareSpirits.com.

It’s another great episode of The Bourbon Community Roundtable and this is the 82nd edition. Over the past few weeks Jack Daniel’s has made its case against a dog toy manufacturer all the way to the Supreme Court. There’s no better time than the present to have Brian Harra of Sipp’n Corn break it down into what this means for parody law and for anyone else trying to infringe on a trademark. Then we dive in with our first topic with expensive bottles of bourbon. I’m not talking secondary, I’m talking like $500 bottles. The idea came to me when I saw lots of people dismissing the new Daniel Weller release because it’s 11 years old and only 4 proof points higher than Weller 12, but Buffalo Trace is putting a price tag that is 900% higher. Does bourbon need $500 bottles? In the second half we look at distillery tasting kits. Four Roses recently announced theirs and people are already getting amped up for it. However, many distilleries have done this in the past and failed. Has the time come when we could see this trend start to take off?

Show Notes:

  • Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about what distillery could overtake Buffalo Trace’s Antique Collection.
  • Talk about the Jack Daniel’s case against the dog toy manufacturer.
  • Does bourbon need $500 bottles?
  • Do you think distillery tasting kits will take off?
  • Why have tasting kits failed in the past?
