In introducing the new drinks line in early 2023, Jim Beam declared that, come summertime, Kentuckians like to drink lemonade or fruit punch with bourbon on their front porches. Well, I’m a born and bred Kentucky horse farmer’s son, and I prefer to make mules with our native Ale-8-One or mint juleps, but I won’t quibble beyond that. I’m sure there are folks around who are sipping on lemonade and bourbon.

Those drinks are the basis for the RTD line of Jim Beam Kentucky Coolers. The line is a sprawling collection of smashes, punches and lemonades (the lemonade mixers alone include Black Cherry, Strawberry, Blueberry and Sweet Tea variants). Each Kentucky Cooler is formulated to be just 120 calories, fairly light compared to a typical mixer of similar size.

That lightness is where the problems with these RTDs start, and that is underscored by the alcohol content. Jim Beam did these in conjunction with the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams. So, the alcohol in the drinks is derived not from bourbon or any actual whiskey, but malt. The strength is a mere 5%, approximately the same as a typical lager, but not what one would normally get from the bourbon mixers these drinks were supposedly inspired by.

These drinks weren’t for me, but in fairness I also don’t think someone of my tastes was the target audience. With their light body, light flavor profiles and relatively low level of alcohol my guess is that these are meant to compete for the trendy seltzer market. I don’t care for those seltzers, so ’nuff said. The thing there, though, is that if a bourbon fan who enjoys a bold mixer or a strong cocktail picks up one of these, they’ll also come away as disappointed as I was by the general lack of heft, to say nothing of the absence of actual Jim Beam Bourbon.

The Price
Jim Beam Kentucky Coolers come in a 12-can variety pack for $16.99, $9.99 for a single flavor six-pack, and $3.49 for a single 24oz. can.

Although Lexington Brewing occupies a clear place in my heart, their place in the beer world is not quite as easily summed up. On the one hand, the company is owned by Alltech, not a big drinks conglomerate. Although Alltech is a substantial company, their base is in animal feed, with brewing and distilling being an adjunct that draws on their existing yeast expertise. On the other, their output and national distribution footprint puts them outside what almost everyone thinks of when they speak of “craft beer.” They fit in the tiny class of mid-sized brewers aren’t part of Big Booze.

There is some synergy between Alltech’s brewery and its various distilleries, especially when it comes to barrel stock. Their latest creation takes full advantage of this, and is the sort of thing that I wonder why nobody thought of it before, certainly once Ready To Drink (RTD) canned and bottled cocktails came into vogue during the Pandemic: Kentucky Old Fashioned Ale. What they’ve done is taken their classic Kentucky Ale (now the Kentucky Irish Red Ale) and brewed it up with cherries and orange peels, then aged it in freshly dumped bourbon barrels. That is a key advantage of running a brewstilling operation: you can get the freshest of freshly dumped bourbon barrels.

The Ale
As you can see from my photo, this is a deep brown ale with red highlights, too dark to be anything like amber. The head off my pour was minimal, and what I did get faded fast.

The name is exactly what you get: it is an ale that leans very heavily into Old Fashioned territory. In particular, that Old Fashioned is one that has tripled down on the orange, as if the bitters chosen were orange, the simple syrup had an orange zest infusion, and the cocktail was served with two peels instead of one. This isn’t to say its orange ale, however: the bourbon vanilla is very present, and the accents of red berry and cookie spice round the picture out.

This is a must-have for anyone who likes their beer interesting and their cocktails classic. I fully intend to go get a four-pack the next time around.

The Price
A four-pack is listed online for $16.

If you want to grab a beef burger from your favorite taqueria a few blocks away, just open the GrubHub app and type “Beef Burger” into the search bar. Now input your payment method and wait for the food to show up at your door. This is all you need to do!

Its simplicity is what attracts most people to GrubHub. Several users have described the app as “very smooth and simple to use.” With GrubHub you will be able to store your address, payment information, and preferences for home and work delivery.

Dairy Queen

There’s no better time-saver than the Dairy Queen iPhone app. With just one click, you can order your favorite foods and have them delivered right to your door. For every dollar spent at participating locations on orders that qualify, you can earn 10 points with the Dairy Queen app. You can redeem your points for in-store purchases or delivery of food or treats.

Avoiding long lines can save you a great deal of time. The more items you order or have delivered, the more points you earn. The best Dairy Queen Treats can be redeemed at the store or ordered from home at a discounted price or for free.

Chick-fil-A

There is no doubt that Chick-fil-A is America’s most popular fast-food chain, and there are many good reasons for that. Firstly, with the Chick-fil-A One rewards app, customers can earn free chicken sandwiches, waffle fries, and sauces as well as earn tons of freebies.

Secondly, the mobile app knows your customized order like a pro! The app saves your favorite pages to your home screen. One touch is all it takes to order your favorite meal in a hurry!

Additionally, you have options when it comes to paying. You can load money into Chick-fil-A One securely with a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, Android Pay, or Visa Checkout, so you can just touch “pay” to pick up your food. You don’t have to worry if you forgot your credit card at home.

Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co., the only brewstillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, has unveiled its latest beer this week with nationwide availability for its Kentucky Old Fashioned Bourbon Barrel Ale (SRP $14.99 / 4pk Bottles). This is a new seasonal beer release.

Coming in at an uncharacteristically high 10% abv versus 8.0% abv as per other previous seasonal releases – simply put by the innovation team at Lexington, “…this one just needed more booze to live up to its namesake.”  Coaxing the flavors of an iconic cocktail out of a beer can be tricky, but given that the brewstillery also makes Town Branch Bourbon, they have some experience relevant in the task. Access to some of the freshest ex-bourbon barrels in Kentucky including their own from Town Branch Bourbon barrels, nearly 20 years of experience barrel-aging beers (the famous Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale) and an expertise in distillation provides the perfect catalyst when blurring the lines between cocktail and beer – all in one bottle.

Most couples book restaurants for a romantic dinner or go on trips during Valentine’s Day. Most of the time, the reservations must be made way earlier than usual to avoid the waiting list.

However, if you’re tired of the hassle of reservations and want to make the best out of your money, we’ve got you covered. Let your beau feel loved right at your home with these fascinating ideas!

1. Enjoy a picnic in the living room

Get takeout or cook your lover’s favorite right from scratch. Push the couch and center table aside. Set out the mat, place some heart-shaped red cushions, turn on the fairy lights, and have a cozy time in each other’s arms.

In the picnic basket, keep the food packed along with some wine and cheese. Enjoy the food while you snuggle up and remember old times!

2. Plan a BBQ and whiskey night

If you guys are a sucker for barbecue and spicy food, this will certainly be one of your most excellent bets.

Prepare steak, pork, pork ribs, or salmon on the barbecue with spices of your choice. Pair the smokey-flavored food with a bottle of vintage Midleton whiskey. The complementing pair will be a cherry on top for your palate.

3. Begin the surprise in the bed

Wake up before your partner, whisk a breakfast, but make it look cute. For instance, make it heart-shaped if you’re making an omelette, pancakes, sandwiches, or even baking a cake.

If there’s milk, add strawberries for a pink flush. Or you can slice the strawberries in half to create little hearts for garnishing.

They’ll smother you with kisses for letting them sleep in and adding a hint of “love”!

4. Have a game night

Do you and your partner love playing games? It might be simple old board games or catchy video games. If yes, then use that to plan the night. For video game lovers, ensure you only have two-player games for the night. Keep your other friends out of the game. Otherwise, there will be no intimate moment for you guys. Clear all the quests together and enjoy the thrill.

On the other hand, if you guys are into board games, plan some sweet rewards for wins and daring punishments for losses. Make the night count by channeling your inner child between the passionate moments. And to add an extra flavor, consider including a bottle of Scotch whisky. Sip and savor the rich flavors while engaging in friendly competition and creating lasting memories.

5. Indulge in a romantic dance

Nothing beats the intimate moments of whirling your partner around as you slow-dance to your favorite music.

So, clear up the living room and set up your music system with meaningful songs for both of you.

Get up close and personal, let your breaths get mixed, and make your partner anticipate a kiss during the dance. When the dance ends, lean in for a passionate kiss!

This one works best if you both love to dance. However, if your partner is a pro, but you need to be more clumsy, learn a few steps from YouTube. Show your partner how much their laughter and enjoyment matter to you!

6. Create a scrapbook

This is one of the sweetest activities for Valentine’s Day. Print out the most remarkable pictures you have as a couple.

It can be from your first date or trips. Alternatively, it can be about milestones like an anniversary, buying a new car, moving in, or even getting married.

Each of you start creating a scrapbook full of pictures and write sweet messages beside them. Set a time limit until when you finish them. Once you’re done, exchange the scrapbooks and flip through the pages and sweet messages.

Exchange all-knowing glances and blushes as you let your sweet thoughts shine through these tangible gifts.

7. Pamper them with a spa

Prepare your bedroom and bathroom with candles and the scent of aromatic essential oils. Turn off the lights for a cosy look.

Invite your partner to the bedroom for a gentle – and slightly naughty – massage. Work on those knotted muscles and let them relax. But don’t forget to tease them a bit. Once you’re done massaging, take a warm dip in a bath with essential oils and bath bombs.

Conclusion

Choose an activity depending on your and your partner’s relationship, respective personalities, and comfort. Remember that you must make YOUR original and personal moment. So, feel free to mix and match to make this special day even more memorable!

A major league connection between bourbon and beer comes to us through the Japanese brewing company Kirin, but not in the most predictable way. Many bourbon fans already know Kirin bought and revived Four Roses some twenty years ago. However, Kirin isn’t using Four Roses bourbon barrels to age Kirin beers (although they are using them to age certain Japanese whiskies). Instead, Kirin acquired some American craft brewers, including Bell’s, New Belgium and Brooklyn Brewing. The latter is where the Four Roses bourbon barrels went.

Black Ops is a Four Roses barrel-aged imperial stout, made with Goldings and Sorachi Ace hops. The stint in the barrels lasted for several months, and after all that was said and done, it came out at 11.5% ABV.

The Beer
This pours as a pitch black, velvety brew, with a quite modest head. The flavor has the roasted malts, deep vanilla, cocoa powder and hints of coffee that I would expect from any stout of this kind, but also a strong current of tart red berries. The stout is too heavy for truly casual drinking, but it is quite yummy. The fruit dimension makes it a good choice for a dessert beer or a moody pour for indulging a boozy sweet tooth.

The Price
Black Ops comes in four-packs of 16 oz cans. Expect to pay about $20 for one, which is pretty reasonable compared to what a pint at the bar costs nowadays.

Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co., the only brewstilling operation in Kentucky, has announced another in-house, goes both ways crossover between their bourbon and their beer: Town Branch Maple Barrel Stout Finished Bourbon and Kentucky Maple Barrel Imperial Stout are now available nationwide in limited quantities.

In late 2021, the brewery made its first release of Kentucky Maple Barrel Imperial Stout after 18-months of aging in barrels that had previously held Kentucky bourbon whiskey and then maple syrup as a second fillThis first release of the awardwinning beer inspired a multi-year commission of several releases to come between beer and spirits in pursuance of the Life of the Barrel.

After decanting the inaugural batch of Kentucky Maple Barrel Imperial Stout barrels, they were quickly allocated to the distillery production team and re-filled with Town Branch Bourbon to let those barrels finish, achieving flavors of the beer alongside traditional flavors of bourbon. The blending team at Town Branch Distillery acknowledges that “Not all ex-beer barrels work for finishing bourbon, but something like a big 12% abv Imperial Maple Stout was too good to pass up the opportunity to try, especially from our own brewing team.”

Over a year later in September 2022, the first release of Town Branch Maple Barrel Stout Finished Bourbon saw about half the barrels blended and released in tandem with the second release of Kentucky Maple Barrel Imperial Stout in honor of National Bourbon Heritage MonthThe result, a distinctly finished Bourbon where flavors of beer-meets-bourbon collide, all the while building upon the DNA of all the products to rest within the Life of the Barrel.  The remaining bourbon barrels not emptied would continue their finishing journey for an extended period.

What’s next? – with a handful of bourbon barrels still resting in the projects original ex- Kentucky Maple Barrel Imperial Stout barrels and scheduled to be released in 2024 with over 3-years finishing time, the brewery has also already laid down another brew to align for release.

People tend to drink alcohol to have fun and feel better. That’s why many people drink in social situations to enhance their experience. It’s even a behavioral expectation within a community, such as a sign of respect toward a superior at work.

It can also serve as a coping mechanism. It’s one of the go-to drinks to forget a painful experience, vent out feelings and frustrations that are otherwise hard to say sober, or fall asleep easier.

This article will focus on how alcohol affects the brain and how whiskey, in particular, supports brain health.

Defining Alcohol

“Alcohol” is the short-term for an alcoholic beverage. It also goes by the names “alcoholic drink,” “strong drink,” “adult beverage,” or simply a “drink.” It’s categorized based on how they’re produced, as follows:

  • Fermented – for example, wine and beer
  • Fortified – drinks with added spirits after fermentation, usually in wines
  • Liqueurs – combining spirits with spices, fruits, sugars, and cream
  • Distilled – vaporizing alcohol, then cooling or condensing it

People often get confused with spirits (also referred to as hard liquor) and alcohol. They’re similar but different. All spirits, such as calvados, are alcoholic. However, not all alcoholic drinks are spirits. For example, beer is an alcoholic drink but not a spirit.

Spirits are often made via distillation. It first works with fermented liquids as a base, then separates the drinks by boiling and condensing them, increasing alcohol content. The main types of spirits are brandy, gin, rum, tequila, vodka, and whiskey. All have a higher alcohol content than other drinks, which means they have a greater effect on the body.

Most alcoholic drinks contain ethanol. It’s a type of alcohol that acts like a drug. Specifically, acute ethanol intake from alcoholic drinks causes central nervous system (CNS) depression, leading to euphoria, slurred speech, impaired sensory,  impaired judgment, impaired motor skills, and uninhibited behavior, which are all common symptoms of being drunk.

How Does Alcohol Affect the Brain?

The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord. Between the two, the brain is the most affected by alcohol intoxication. It’s so delicate and intricate that it requires a “careful balance” of neurotransmitters (the body’s chemical messengers) to function properly.

However, alcohol blocks the neurons (the cells that use neurotransmitters to transmit signals within the body). This leads to common immediate symptoms of CNS depression or alcohol intoxication that were mentioned earlier.

If alcohol intake becomes long-term, the brain adapts to the blocked signals to compensate for the effects of alcohol by over-activating certain neurotransmitters. This continues even after alcohol leaves the system, which causes painful and potentially detrimental withdrawal symptoms that can hurt brain cells. This damage can be worsened by drinking binges and sudden withdrawal.

The damage of alcohol to the brain can take several forms, such as :

  1. Neurotoxicity – This happens when neurons overreact to neurotransmitters after being exposed to them for a long time, which causes the former to burn out. Neurons make up the pathways between various brain parts, so if they burn out, these pathways will have slow reactions. In other words, there will be a delay in people’s reactions, such as slurred speech or sluggish movements.
  2. Brain matter damage – Besides pathway damage, heavy alcohol use damages the brain matter (the two sides of the brain) and causes “brain shrinkage.” Specifically, it reduces the volume of gray matter (made of cell bodies) and white matter ( made of nerve fibers or cell pathways) over time.

These damages cause observable issues on:

  1. Verbal fluency
  2. Verbal learning
  3. Processing speed
  4. Working memory
  5. Attention
  6. Problem-solving
  7. Spatial processing
  8. Impulsivity

Adolescents are especially susceptible to long-lasting or permanent cognitive deficits and damage since their brains are still developing. People with malnutrition, especially a vitamin B deficiency, are also at risk of these consequences.

Regardless of age, these impairments grow worse without proper treatment. For example, they can potentially develop into alcohol-related dementia or, worse, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which may result in amnesia or coma if left untreated.

However, note that these consequences will only occur if one drinks alcohol excessively. Although alcohol is a neurotoxin, several studies have shown that “moderate consumption” may provide some health benefits.

Cognitive Benefits of Whiskey

When it comes to “healthy alcoholic drinks,” wines usually come first into people’s minds. However, many other drinks can do the same, such as whiskey. In fact, an increasing number of studies show that a moderate whiskey intake can support the brain.

Here are the proven benefits of a moderate intake of whiskey:

  1. Maintain brain equilibrium – The plant-based antioxidants in whisky maintain a healthy chemical balance in the brain.
  2. Improves short-term memory retention – The same antioxidants can increase the activities of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the neurotransmitter responsible for nervous system function and memory. In other words, whiskey can help keep the mind active and aid in memory retention.
  3. Prolongs the onset of dementia – Those antioxidants can also reduce the risk of and even prevent developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Final Thoughts

Always drink responsibly. This means drinking alcohol moderately, typically a drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Heavy or chronic drinking, on the other hand, means three drinks per day or seven drinks per week for women and four drinks per day or 14 drinks per week for men. Avoiding excessive drinking means avoiding facing severe health consequences.

I know what you must be thinking: “this is a whiskey media site, so why are they reviewing tequila?” Because we touch on all things connected to whiskey, including other types of liquor aged in old whiskey barrels. Take, for example, this recent review of a rye barrel-aged red wine.

Storywood is the creation of Scotland-born, Texas-raised Michael Ballantyne, and its shtick is sourcing tequila and aging it in various types of used casks. The case we are looking at here is a Reposado, which means the tequila has been aged for up to one year. In this case, that is seven months in a cask of undisclosed type (barrel? hogshead?) that was previously used to age an undisclosed Speyside malt whisky.

Keeping in mind that this is a whiskey-first website, I’ve chosen to approach this tequila in two different ways. One is to try it in a riff on a classic whiskey cocktail. For that, I made an Old Fashioned, using nectarines instead of the usual orange slices. We’ll see how a Speyside Scotch-aged tequila instead of bourbon in an Old Fashioned riff. The second is to take a sip of the tequila straight, and then another sip with chili salt and lime.

The Tequila
The Scotch-aged tequila took this into an unexpected direction, and I’m glad the riff I used recommended using nectarines. The modest note of honey complimented the nectarine slices in my drink well, and the light vanilla note was welcome and familiar. But the tequila gave the cocktail a sharp, earthy character, that is quite unlike what one expects from an Old Fashioned, transforming an entire side of a familiar coin.

As for taking the tequila straight, this one is an odd duck. Being a Reposado, and aged in an ex-Speyside malt barrel at that, it has one foot in a generic whisky and one foot in earthy agave. It therefore doesn’t need the salt and lime wedge the way a Blanco does, but at the same time, I can’t quite endorse the notion of sipping on it neat. It might make a good highball, though, done up with a lime wedge, soda and ice. But having already done one riff with the stuff, taking it in that direction must wait for my next trial.

The Price
Expect to pay about $50 for this bottle.
