Ballantine’s Scotch whisky is collaborating with the video game series Borderlands to launch a limited edition bottle of whisky.

In their first-ever video game collaboration, Ballantine’s will have a non-player character (NPC) – specifically, the bar mistress, Mad Moxxi – who will also hold the role of chief galactic expansion officer (CGEO).

The Ballantine’s x Moxxi’s Bar Limited Edition will contain Ballantine’s Finest, and Moxxi will appear in brand competitions with fans on LinkedIn and Twitter. Competition winners will receive a bottle, as well as access to exclusive Borderlands 3 content. Moxxi is also set to make in-person appearances at bars that do not feature in the game’s fictional universe.

For the second time in the last few months... there is a new product combining two of my favorite things... video games and whiskey... Ballantine's has introduced a collaboration with Gearbox Entertainment's Borderlands franchise for the release of Ballantine's Finest Moxxi’s Bar Edition. 

The backstory on this release is that Ballantine's has made Moxxi (the famous bartender on Pandora and beyond in the Borderlands video game series) their Chief Galactic Expansion Officer (CGEO) and she collaborated with a George Ballantine to create the blend.


This is real product. The website has different drink mixes to be used... including the Moxxi Mule and Apocalypse Spritz. The blended Scotch whisky comes in at 80 proof (40% alcohol) and can be bought online at such places as thewhiskyexchange.com (note: shipping alcohol to Ohio is illegal). No price was provided and it's currently showing out of stock, but you can sign up to be notified when it comes back in. The flavor profile is apple, smoke, malt, toffee, and caramel. 

My Take

The Borderlands games are some of my favorite of all-time with Borderlands 2 being one of the best games I've ever played. I've never had Ballantine's, but I love the collaboration. Moxxi is awesome in the game so it makes total sense to do a collaboration between the two companies. This release is supposed to be the first step, with more to be announced during 2022. Depending on the price, this would be a cool bottle to have, especially for the video game lover.
