Up in St. Paul, Minnesota, three guys teamed up to open a gastropub style micro-distillery, King Coil Spirits. The collective story of Matthew Lange, Matthew Zanetti and Jeremy Maynor is a pretty familiar one to those who know the craft spirits scene. Zanetti is a businessman, and after two decades in real estate and construction started a craft brewery in 2013. Maynor also comes from a white collar, business background. Zanetti brought in Lange, who was his brewmaster. Seeing white collar, ex-corporate and business types start a craft distillery is a familiar story, as is drawing on brewing know-how to make whiskey.

King Coil, with its mid-century modern sense of style, has a rye and bourbon whiskey in its inventory, but more interesting is their Poitin-style peaty whiskey. Poitin is basically Irish moonshine, and as a malt whiskey double distilled on a hybrid still using just the pot, this stuff is quite similar to the original. The white whiskey/legal moonshine thing became moribund several years ago, so it’s nice to see King Coil pick it back up and put an interesting twist on it. It’s bottled at 90 proof.

The Whiskey
The pour is almost clear. There is just a hint of yellow-green in the liquid; shifting the angle on the glass tends to bring it out a little more distinctly. The nose comes across strongly as malt whiskey new make, and a grassy, oily malt new make at that. What is absent is any hint of the peaty part.

A sip changes all that. A plume of herbal smoke comes up first, followed by a little honey and a little all-spice. The taste concludes with a moderate, smoky finish.

This whiskey is surprisingly good. It is very simple stuff, but not as rough around the edges as most barely matured whiskeys, and in being simple it’s elements are clear. If you like a smoky whisky, it’s worth checking out for its plainer virtues. The thing about simplicity is that its hard to argue you’ve ruined the thing by putting it on the rocks or mixing it up into a highball.

The Price
No pricing information was offered, but the Peaty Poitin is available at the distillery and some area retailers.

Ole Smoky Launches Its Bourbon Natonwide

Ole Smoky Distillery, best known as the Gatlinburg, Tennessee moonshine-maker and tourist destination, has announced the nation-wide distribution of its Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The distillery is already well-known outside of Tennessee, and is the most prominent of the legal moonshine brands. Now it is staking out a place in the bourbon market with this four year old, Tennessee-made bourbon.

“The American Whiskey category is continuing to grow, and as one of the fastest growing spirits companies in the country, Ole Smoky is excited to offer consumers a straight whiskey from a distillery they know and trust,” says Robert Hall, CEO of Ole Smoky Distillery. “We’re pleased to offer consumers, who may have first tasted a flavored whiskey in one of our distilleries, an accessibly priced, high-quality Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey option from Ole Smoky.”

This product release follows the launch of James Ownby Reserve, the premium whiskey brand commemorating the remarkable history and spirit of James Ownby, the 5th generation great-grandfather of Ole Smoky Distillery’s Founder, Joe Baker. The 94-proof whiskey is aged in American virgin charred oak barrels and filtered utilizing the Lincoln County Process, passing through sugar maple charcoal before aging. Enjoyed neat or on the rocks, James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey is available in select markets and at Ole Smoky’s four distillery locations.

By contrast, Ole Smoky Bourbon is not a Tennessee Whiskey. The distinction between bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey is the Lincoln County Process, and without the charcoal-filtration prior to barreling, all Tennessee Whiskeys would otherwise be bourbon.

Ole Smoky first launched its moonshine products in 2010, shortly after Tennessee legalized the distillation of moonshine in 2009, followed by the launch of their whiskey products in 2016. Ole Smoky’s whiskey line is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and creativity, with each flavor adding a unique twist to the classic whiskey profile, making it an excellent choice for both cocktail enthusiasts and those who prefer to sip their whiskey straight. As the first legal moonshine in East Tennessee, the brand makes a wide range of moonshines and whiskeys in four distillery locations across the state and hosted more than 5 million visitors in 2023 alone.

Bourbon, moonshine, and astronomy lovers unite. To mark the upcoming total solar eclipse, Casey Jones Distillery today announced the launch of its new four grain Total Eclipse Kentucky Straight Bourbon (SRP: $49.99 for a 750ml) and the re-release of its previously sold out Total Eclipse Moonshine ($29.99 for a 750ml). Created by Master Distiller Arlon (“AJ”) Casey Jones, both the Total Eclipse Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Total Eclipse Moonshine are the perfect companions for THE celestial event of a lifetime. The eclipse will cross the continental U.S. on Monday, April 8, 2024.

At an approachable 100-proof and made from locally sourced corn, wheat, rye, and barley (mash bill: 75% corn, 10% wheat, 10% rye, 5% malted barley), Total Eclipse Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a perfectly balanced, four grain bourbon aged for a minimum of two years. The whiskey is distilled in small batches in a hybrid pot still by AJ Jones, who has a storied family legacy of still building, bootlegging, and American Whiskey production. On the nose, the whiskey yields aromas of baking spice and butterscotch while the palate reveals a semi-sweet body of orange zest, toasted oak, and a pecan nut finish. Donning the requisite solar safety glasses, stargazers may enjoy an Eclipsed Old Fashioned while experiencing the eclipse from their prime viewing location.

Named the “Official Spirits of the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” by Senator Whitney Westerfield on the Kentucky Senate floor, 100-proof Total Eclipse Moonshine was inspired by a Prohibition-era family recipe distilled from equal parts corn and cane. Debuting in 2017 to coincide with the previous total solar eclipse, Total Eclipse Moonshine offers a velvety smooth sipping experience with sweet corn and vegetal sweetness – heavenly inspiration for the signature “Moonarita” – a spin on a classic Margarita.

Seven years ago, Casey Jones Distillery was at the heart of the total solar eclipse, as it was positioned within the optimal viewing path of this cosmic phenomena. That weekend, the distillery hosted a remarkable 12,000 astronomy buffs, and sold out of its initial run of 50,000 bottles of Total Eclipse Moonshine. To commemorate the occasion, the distillery laid down a Total Eclipse Cask Strength Single Barrel, which will be released as a distillery exclusive on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

“Twice in my lifetime, I’ll experience the shadow of the eclipse over our land here in Hopkinsville – a rare and spectacular gift that inspired me to create something special. In 2017, we introduced our Total Eclipse Moonshine, and for the upcoming eclipse in April, we’re proud to introduce our four grain Total Eclipse Kentucky Straight Bourbon – a nod to our rich distilling traditions and those once-in-a-lifetime moments that bring us together,” said Master Distiller AJ Jones.

Casey Jones Distillery will host an intimate gathering for friends, fans, and locals on April 8th, where guests can mix and mingle while sipping on signature cocktails and enjoying nature’s majesty. “Come on down, meet the folks behind the bottle, and let’s share in this magic together. Here in Kentucky, we’re all about hospitality and good spirits, and we’re eager to pour you a glass of both,” Jones continued.

Total Eclipse Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Total Eclipse Moonshine are available for purchase online at www.caseyjonesdistillery.com. The bourbon has select retail availability in KY and OK while the moonshine has select retail availability in CA, GA, KY, IL, OK, TN, TX, NY, NJ, and WI.

Barrel House Distilling Co., a pioneer in crafting exceptional spirits, has officially broken ground on their significant expansion into Harrison County, marking a milestone moment for both the company and the local community. This expansion project, totaling a remarkable $1.8 million investment, is set to commence in the first and second quarters of 2024.

The development will not only fortify the presence of Barrel House Distilling Co. in the region but is poised to contribute significantly to the local economy. The project is anticipated to generate 2-4 full-time positions with an average wage exceeding $20 per hour, complete with comprehensive benefits. Moreover, during the construction phase, the community can expect the creation of 15-20 additional jobs, providing a boost to the local workforce.

Jeff Wiseman and Pete Wright, the visionary minds behind Barrel House Distilling Company, started in 2006 making Barrel House as the first distillery Lexington had seen in 50 years. By December 2008, they celebrated the release of their inaugural product, Pure Blue Vodka. Situated in one of the original barreling houses of the historic Lexington Distillery District, Barrel House Distilling Company stands as a beacon of tradition and innovation.

Notably, Wiseman and Wright have not only revived the art of distillation in Lexington after five decades but are also set to make history as the first distilling company in Harrison County since the 1970s. Drawing inspiration from the rich legacy of Kentucky distillers, Barrel House Distilling Company is dedicated to preserving and advancing the traditional methods that have defined the region’s spirits for generations.

Looking ahead to the fifth year of operation in Harrison County, Barrel House Distilling Co. plans to augment its investment by an additional $750,000 – $2,000,000, leading to the creation of 8-12 more employees. The company envisions a substantial increase in tourism, with a projected 12,000 visitors annually, resulting in an annual economic impact of $2.7 million.

While Barrel House Distilling Co.’s new facility in Cynthiana will primarily focus on the production of the renowned Barrel House Select Bourbon, a variety of other spirits will be produced. This includes Pure Blue Vodka, Oak Rum, Barrel House Rum, Devil John Moonshine, Dark Shine, Brandy, and King Solomon Rye Whiskey, which will all be crafted at this location alongside the existing site in Lexington.

In an effort to connect with the community, Barrel House Distilling Co. will offer a versatile event space capable of accommodating up to 100 guests, with an option to rent the kitchen for special occasions. Furthermore, the company is proud to announce that both the Moonshine Trail and Kentucky Bourbon Trail tours will be available at this location, providing an immersive experience for visitors.

It is essential to note that the existing production sites for RockCastle Bourbon and Elkhorn Tavern in Lexington will remain operational, solidifying the company’s commitment to maintaining a presence in the heart of Kentucky’s bourbon culture.

Barrel House Distilling Co. is not only expanding its physical footprint but is also reinforcing its commitment to community engagement. The company has already established itself as an active supporter of local initiatives, contributing to non-profits and charities in Harrison County, such as the local food pantry.

The expansion represents a significant investment in the region, promising economic growth, job opportunities, and a thriving hub for spirits enthusiasts.

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced that Pensive Distilling Co. in Newport is the newest member of the non-profit trade group that unites and leads Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry.

Founded by Scott Quigley in 2020, Pensive is located at 720 Monmouth Street in downtown Newport and includes a horse-themed restaurant and bar. The distillery was named after Pensive, a famous Calumet Farm racehorse that won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1944.

Their brands include Pensive 100 Proof Bourbon, Pensive Vodka and Pensive Apple Pie Moonshine.

“The KDA has a special camaraderie and we are thrilled to be part of it,” Quigley said. “Pensive hopes to provide a must-do experience in Kentucky that compliments our neighbors at New Riff, Second Sight, Boone County and the Neeley Family Distillery. We are grateful to be members.”

Master Distiller Corbin Arrasmith said, “We here at Pensive look forward to the opportunity and the camaraderie that the KDA offers. We can’t wait to make Pensive Distilling Company a can’t-miss spot in Northern Kentucky.”

KDA President Eric Gregory said Pensive Distilling Co.’s community involvement and support is emblematic of the Kentucky Bourbon culture.

“By embracing the rich history of Newport and local vendors, Scott and his team have built a neighborhood establishment that brings people together over good food and craft spirits,” Gregory said. “We are excited to welcome them to our growing KDA family.”

Pensive joins KDA as a Craft-level member aging less than 10,000 barrels a year, and joins an impressive list of distilleries in Northern Kentucky, which is a Gateway sponsor of the KDA’s famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience.

Pensive also is now eligible to apply to join the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour, which the association created in 2012 as the nation’s first and only tourism attraction to showcase the flourishing artisan distilling movement.
