The Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the release of a new ultra-premium selection of rare whiskies - The Samhla Collection. The trilogy of whiskies, which are named after the Scots Gaelic word for 'symbol', is designed to embody three generations of Bladnoch's history. To reflect this the three bottlings were distilled in 1966, 1990 and 2008.

The McClelland 1966 honours Bladnoch's past and is named after the distillery's founders, John and Thomas McClelland. It is the oldest ever release of Bladnoch and has been matured in a single American oak ex-bourbon cask. This has yielded just 15 bottles. It is released at 42.8% ABV and will cost £50,000.

The Prior 1990 is named after David Prior, the current owner who rescued Bladnoch from potential closure in 2015. This whisky has been matured in a Spanish oak ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry butt and there are just 50 bottles. It is released at 47.6% ABV and will cost £10,500.

The Sage 2008 is bottled to celebrate David Prior's daughter, Sage, who was born in 2008. The whisky is drawn from two American oak ex-red wine casks and there are only 100 bottles. It is released at 52.5% ABV and will cost £5,250. All three bottlings are available via enquiry on the dedicated page on the Bladnoch website - click here.

"The Samhla Collection stands as a tribute to the journey Bladnoch has undertaken. It symbolises the preservation of a legacy that has weathered the test of time. It is a privilege to ensure its continued existence, and to carry the torch of tradition, innovation, and excellence."
David Prior / Owner of Bladnoch.

Bladnoch

The Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the release of a new series of whiskies that celebrates the nuances of the whisky making craft. The Dragon Series consists of five single malts with each bottling showing a pivotal moment in the production process. The collection draws inspiration from the Dragon Curve, a fractional curve in mathematics that suggest a stable and predictable pattern but often gives other outcomes.

The expressions are divided into five iterations. The 1st Iteration : The Field - Field to Distillery tells the story of barley sourced from local farms and the malting process. The liquid has been matured in re-fill ex-bourbon casks and is bottled at 46.7% ABV. The 2nd Iteration : The Spirit - Malt to Spirit captures the essence of mashing, fermentation and distillation within the distillery. It has been matured in first-fill and re-fill ex-bourbon casks and is bottled at 48.3% ABV.

The 3rd Iteration : The Casks - Tree to Cask considers the art of coopering and the oak used to make the barrels for maturation. It has been matured in a combination of American oak first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-sherry casks made from Spanish oak, and is bottled at 49.9% ABV. The 4th Iteration : The Ageing - New to Mature focusses on the unpredictable nature of spirit maturation. It has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and ex-red wine hogsheads, and is bottled at 51.1% ABV.

The 5th Iteration : The Decision - Complexity to Simplicity looks at role of the Master Blender and their work in the sample room, which determines when the whisky is ready. This has been matured in a combination of ex-Tokaji sweet wine casks from Hungary and Spanish ex-sherry casks. It is bottled at 53.1% ABV.

Each bottling in the series will cost £110 with the entire set of five selling for £550. The Dragon Series will be available in specialist whisky retailers in selected global markets, plus from the distillery shop in Wigtown and via www.bladnoch.com.

Isle of Raasay

The privately owned Isle of Raasay distillery has launched a distillery exclusive bottling to celebrate a recent award. The distillery was the winner of the coverted Tourism Destination of the Year 2022 at the Scottish Whisky Awards. For the limited edition release the distillery team, led by founder and Master Distiller Alasdair Day, selected ex-sherry and ex-Manzanilla Pasada casks.

These were filled with lightly peated spirit and the whisky has been bottled at the natural cask strength of 63.5% ABV. The Isle of Raasay - Tourism Destination of the Year Edition will be on sale at the distillery shop and also exclusively to their online club members. There are just 2,500 bottles and these will be available to purchase from May 17. Each will cost £95.

Kilchoman
The family-owned Islay farm distillery of Kilchoman have announced the release of two Spring limited editions - the Kilchoman Cognac Cask Matured and Fino Sherry Cask Matured. The Cognac Cask Matured (pictured, left) is the first ever Kilchoman expression to feature maturation in ex-Cognac casks. These were sourced from Cognac house Tonellerie Bossuet in France. Heavily peated (50ppm) spirit was filled to these casks in 2016 and have matured for a minimum of six years. It is bottled at 50% ABV and there are just 15,100 bottles.

The Kilchoman Fino Sherry Cask Matured (pictured, right) is just the second ever release to feature ex-Fino sherry butts. These were selected by founder Anthony Wills and Robin Bignal, the Production Manager at Kilchoman. Just 20 butts were used and these were sourced from Bodega Jose y Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain. They were filled with heavily peated (50ppm) spirit in 2018 and matured for a minimum of five years. There are just 15,650 bottles and these are released at 50% ABV. Both bottlings are non chill-filtered and of natural colour.

"The Cognac casks selected allow our fruit-driven, citrus spirit style to balance with that of the Cognac oak. There is a delicate balance to be found that ensures flavours from the spirit and the cask are easily detected.
The Fino Sherry maturation works incredibly well with our classic Kilchoman character. Fino is another example of sherry casks working together, not against, our spirit.”
Anthony Wills.

Review / Bladnoch Liora

This new whisky is the latest addition to the Classic Collection from the Lowland distillery of Bladnoch. The Bladnoch Liora will sit aside the Alinta, Vinaya and Samsara in the range. It is the first of these to be released at a higher 'distiller's strength'. Liora has been created by Dr. Nick Savage, the Master Blender for Bladnoch, and sees a marriage of first-fill ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks. Liora means 'gift of light' in Hebrew and is bottled at 52.2% ABV. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will initially be sold only in the UK, at the distillery shop and via the Bladnoch website. Wider global distribution is scheduled to follow later. A bottle will cost £70.

Bladnoch is located in a remote spot of Dumfries & Galloway, close to the village of Wigtown, in southern Scotland. It was founded in 1817 by brothers John and Thomas McClelland. The name is derived from the ancient Gaelic name Blaidzenoch and the nearby River Bladnoch supplies the water for the whisky production. The distillery has had a chequered history with numerous closures in its two centuries due to operational, financial and location reasons.

The most recent closure came in 2014 when the previous ownership went into liquidation. David Prior took over a year later and completed a major refurbishment of the distillery. Production restarted in the Summer of 2017 with a new visitor centre later opened by HRH Prince Charles in September 2019. It is the oldest privately owned distillery in Scotland. Production capacity is now 1.5 million litres per year.

Our tasting notes

The colour is deep golden yellow and the nose woody, sweet and rich. Aromas of toasted oak and scorched marshmallow hit first and are supported by some white chocolate and vanilla paste. There is also a hint of green apple and white pepper, plus some freshly shaved sawdust. The combination is intriguing and slightly quirky.

On the palate this whisky is again woody and sweet initially. Toasted oak, fresh wood shavings and a white pepper-like hit burst through to begin with. These are quickly followed by highly confected and sweet notes such as white chocolate, cream soda and green jelly babies. The green element is highlighted by further notes of crisp green apple and boiled peardrop sweets.

Underneath is a distinct drying spiciness. This builds on the peppery note found in the early palate. Warming baking spices (think of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove) join with tannic wood spices to create a mouthwatering structure and feel. A late bitter herbal note exaggerates this and is joined by a hint of marshmallow.

The finish is of decent length but becomes very drying very quickly. The sweet and confected characteristics fade quickly to reveal hot spirit and woody spice. The lack of balance is a shame and leaves a tannic and peppery feel in the mouth.

What's the verdict?

It is good to see Bladnoch expanding their core range and Liora offers something different from the others that we have sampled. However, its youthfulness shows through and the use of the virgin oak asks seems little heavy handed in our opinion. The sweet and confected notes are pleasant but they are dominated too easily by the drying woody and tannic notes that the virgin oak gives. If you like plenty of spice and wood in you whisky then this could be for you.
