Ann Marshall and Scott Blackwell founded High Wire Distilling in Charleston, South Carolina 10 years ago this week. They started out with no distilling experience, but have earned the respect of other distillers with their unique Jimmy Red Bourbon distilled from an endangered strain of corn. We’ll talk with them on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, two distilleries were sold to new owners this week, while planning permission has been granted for two more distilleries in Scotland. Former Diageo master blender Maureen Robinson has come out of retirement to lead the Kentucky Owl Bourbon brand, and Sweden’s Mackmyra Distillery marks a milestone.

Do you ever visit Hilton Head? If so, you have to stop by Burnt Church Distillery and grab yourself a bottle of Johnny Fever Bourbon .

Big Chief had a chance to visit this craft distillery in Bluffton, South Carolina and can attest to it’s beauty. This bourbon whiskey was actually contract distilled by Jeptha Creed Distillery .

Make sure you listen to this podcast episode and hear how we got this bottle.   We hope you enjoy Jim and Mike’s review.  Cheers!

Tasting Notes: Johnny Fever Bourbon

Vital Stats: This whiskey has a undisclosed a mash bill but is a four grain and is non age stated. We believe it to be over 4 years old. It is 100 proof and has a MSRP of $99

Appearance: A beautiful bottle topped with a shotgun shell. Dark amber bourbon inside.

Nose: Sweet and sticky like sorghum molasses, burnt caramel and juicy fruit gum.

Palate:  An explosion of flavor that is a little drying, toasted marshmallow sweetness with oak. Mouth coating with spice.

Finish: medium with a might Kentucky hug.

Overall: At $99 it is a stretch but its a buy for us because the bourbon is as good as the story. If your a bird hunter you will want this bourbon on your shelf. Would make a great gift for that hunter in your life as well.

Could this be a change for Jeptha Creed Distillery? Stay tuned in and find out.
