2022 Laphroaig Cairdeas Warehouse 1 Review

The 2015 version of this was made entirely from barley that was floor malted at Laphroaig, the 2022 is not. In fact, this year’s release is essentially just a NAS Laphroaig Cask Strength with casks all pulled from a single warehouse. Which, to be clear, I’m not poo-pooing. I love Laphroaig CS, I’m just pointing out that 2022 Cairdeas is standing on well-trodden, safe, ground.

Oily smoke, malt, saline, graham, dried orchard fruit, honey, malt, vanilla, caramel, touch of baking spice and plastic.

If you want to know the essence of Laphroaig, give this a sniff.

PALATE
Oily smoke, malt, saline, graham, dried orchard fruit, honey, malt, vanilla, caramel, touch of baking spice and plastic.

It’s just wave after wave of LAPHROAIG crashing over the palate in a carbon copy of the nose.

FINISH
Long -> Smoke, malt, minerality, graham and honey.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Perfectly balanced, full-bodied, heavy oily feel.

2022 Laphroaig Cairdeas Warehouse 1 – Overall Thoughts and Score

This is just pure Laphroaig. Pure, classic, un-fussy, Laphroaig. And there is nothing wrong with that – ever. This is everything I love about Laphroig all in one glass and it’s all on display thanks to the use of ex-bourbon casks that don’t get too much in the way.

I know the 2022 Laphroaig Cairdeas Warehouse 1 is almost a retread of the 2015 Cairdeas, but it’s so good I don’t really care and it currently sits tied with it for second place in the Cairdeas lineup. The incredible 2013 Cairdeas (ex-Port) is still holding strong at number one, but releases like this might one day take the crown.

Laphroaig has released the 2022 edition of their Càirdeas whisky as part of this year’s Islay Fèis Ìle whisky festival.

Laphroaig Càirdeas 2022 Warehouse 1 was matured in first-fill Maker’s Mark Bourbon casks then aged in Laphroaig’s nearly-200-year-old Warehouse 1, bottled at 52.8% alcohol by volume [105.6 proof] and is said to contain notes of fudge, honey, licorice, nutmeg, peat, smoke, walnut and white pepper.

Laphroaig Cáirdeas 2022 Warehouse 1 whisky is being made available for $115 per 700 ml bottle via the official Laphroaig site.

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2021 PX Review

Like the L3W, the 2021 Cairdeas started life in ex-Bourbon casks, basically the standard Laphroaig, then moved into quarter casks, aka the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, and then it spent some time finishing in PX casks instead of Oloroso casks. This is a PX version of the L3W; bottled at cask strength of course.

You know… if you had a Laphroaig Cask Strength, a 2017 Cairdeas (Quarter Cask) and a Laphroaig PX (travel retail), you could set up a semi-deconstructed, evolutionary, tasting for yourself. And before you other nerds chime in, yes, I know L10CS is almost 2x older than LQC, but hopefully, you can see what I’m getting at by working with what’s available in the market.

We covered a lot of ground up here and I’m getting thirsty. So let’s get to drinkin’ and sip into this whisky.
