Hemingway Whiskey Company has announced the debut of its core expression, Hemingway Rye Whiskey Signature Edition. The first batch of Hemingway Rye Whiskey Signature Edition is a blend of straight rye whiskeys – 90% 6-year-old Indiana Straight Rye and 10% 4-year-old Kentucky Straight Rye.
We've been thrilled to see the overwhelmingly positive reception to our inaugural whiskey releases, and we couldn't be more proud to share our Signature Edition.
As mentioned, this is a blended rye made up of 90% 6-year-old Indiana Straight Rye and 10% 4-year-old Kentucky Straight Rye. Both whiskeys undergo a special finish in a rum-seasoned Oloroso Sherry cask. It comes in at 102 proof (51% alcohol). The press release said it has 'notes of dried fruits and raisins, toasted nuts, nutmeg and cocoa on the palate, and followed by a hint of citrus zest. This leads to a complex grand finale of baked fruit, a touch of baking spices, and a lingering caramel sweetness.' It carries an MSRP of $79.99 and are not available for sale in Ohio, but can be shipped to Ohio from their website.
My Take
Full disclosure, Ernest Hemingway is my favorite author, but I think it's so bizarre to create a brand named after him considering he was known to go on alcoholic binges and 'his health was further complicated by heavy drinking throughout most of his life', which may have contributed to his suicide.
In regards to this release, it's a blended rye from two variations that then underwent additional aging in a sherry cask. It seems like a lot and doesn't move the needle for me to want to try this. I would be more inclined without the sherry aging.
