The Exclusive Southern Spirit Gets Garden & Gun’s Ultimate Stamp of Approval

Chicken Cock Whiskey Releases Single Barrel Double Oak Whiskey

Chicken Cock Whiskey has unveiled an exclusive Single Barrel Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey in partnership with Garden & Gun. Inspired by the South and its time-honored traditions, Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Garden & Gun’s Single Barrel Double Oak is imbued with history and is now available on Chicken Cock’s website and will be available soon in retail stores for $149.99.

Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Master Distiller Gregg Snyder is an avid hunter when he’s not hand selecting white oak for aging spirits, or sampling batches to find the perfect blend of flavors. Snyder describes Garden & Gun’s Single Barrel Double Oak Whiskey as “just phenomenal… full-flavored, full-bodied and smooth,” with a fragrance of caramel coffee and a crème brûlée finish – an ideal bottle to open after an adventurous day of hunting.

“It has the mash bill recipe for bourbon,” explains Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Brand Ambassador Will Woodington. However, due to the American white oak barrel shortage in 2014, the spirit was aged in bourbon barrels for seven years. “Then we finished it in new American white oak barrels to elevate the whiskey to our standards.” For this reason, the spirit cannot be qualified as a bourbon, but rather a Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey, though all other aspects of it align with those of a classic bourbon. Only 12 barrels of this exclusive spirit will be bottled and available for purchase.

“Garden & Gun is thrilled to partner with Chicken Cock Whiskey to present this limited-edition Double Oak single barrel collaboration,” shares Christian Bryant, vice president and publisher of Garden & Gun. “We know our readers will relish the warm and inviting hints of vanilla, steeped berries, and cinnamon. This bottle will add character to any home bar.”

Chicken Cock Whiskey Debuts Red Stave Kentucky Straight Bourbon

“The Famous Old Brand”, Chicken Cock Whiskey, debuts its new limited edition release, Red Stave, a celebration of two iconic American industries, Kentucky bourbon and California wine. Just in time for the holidays, Red Stave will entice the senses of whiskey and wine lovers alike, as Chicken Cock Whiskey’s finest Kentucky Straight Bourbon is finished in carefully selected J. Wilkes Petite Sirah barrels hailing from California.

With over 300 years of combined whiskey and winemaking history, Chicken Cock Whiskey and J. Wilkes have partnered to create a unique Kentucky Straight Bourbon that commemorates America’s rich agricultural background. J. Wilkes Petite Sirah is produced by the Miller Family Wine Company, which is located in the Paso Robles Highlands District of California. The J. Wilkes winemakers take full advantage of the hot days and cool nights high above the Pacific Ocean to harvest grapes that are perfectly ripened and bursting with flavor.

Bottled at 102.4 proof (51.2% ABV), the flavor-rich Petite Sirah wine barrels give Red Stave a balanced stone fruit taste profile and a beautiful red tint. The limited edition whiskey, which features a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley, is packaged in a Prohibition-era commemorative tin that makes it perfect for gift giving this holiday season.

“Red Stave is another excellent example of our devoted, continued mission of resurrecting the brand and bringing Chicken Cock Whiskey back to the high-quality reputation it was known for many years ago, beginning in 1856,” says Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Master Distiller, Gregg Snyder. “Red Stave is an exquisite, epicurean delight – from the rich Mahogany color, to its creamy, viscous mouthfeel, to the wide-ranging but balanced complexity of aromas and delectable flavors, all the way to the spectacular finish that never wants to leave your taste buds.”

“We are very excited about this partnership,” says a spokesperson of J. Wilkes Winery.“Thoughtful, premium products are what J. Wilkes and Chicken Cock have both committed to create and have demonstrated over time. To be able to share a crossover of our products is an exciting and fun opportunity to share our passions with the world."

Chicken Cock has announced the release of an 8 year aged Double Oak Kentucky Whiskey. This release is bottled at 92 proof (46% alcohol) and comes in their replica apothecary style bottle.

Matti Anttila, founder of Grain & Barrel Spirits, which owns Chicken Cock Whiskey, says:

You can't have great whiskey without great wood and this expression is the perfect marriage of age and wood. That's why we aged our eight-year-old whiskey in American oak barrels twice. This process allows us to extract all the great flavor within the oak to create a robust and intriguing sipper that's likely to not last long on the shelves.

Chicken Cock Whiskey Double Oak is the combination of two distinct barrel finishings. The first is a seven-year-old Kentucky Whiskey which was aged in used barrels. The second finish was when the bourbon was then transferred into new white American oak barrels, which were placed on the top floor of the rickhouse at Bardstown Bourbon Company for an additional 18 months.

It comes in with an MSRP of $99.99 and will be available nationwide. It carries the following tasting notes:

  • Nose: dark chocolate covered berries, toasted coconut shavings and caramel coffee
  • Taste: vanilla bean, waffle cone, steeped berries, and warm baking spices
  • Finish: round and balanced with creamy undertones and hints of crème brulée and cinnamon flan

My Take

One of my favorite bourbons is the Woodford Double Oaked (scored an 85 out of 100) so I'm excited that new double barreled offerings are hitting the market. In terms of this release, I would have loved to see a lower price, but I get the premium since it does come with the 8 years of aging. One disappointment is that no mash bill was provided. It's listed as a whiskey not a bourbon, however, I think this could still be a good special occasion or gift whiskey.
