The wheated American whisky brand of Maker's Mark has debuted the inaugural bottling of its Cellar Aged expression. The whisky is planned to be an annual small batched release going forward. For this expression Rob Samuels, 8th generation whisky maker and grandson of the brand's founder, has taken regular Maker's Mark (which is aged for just over six years on average) and then placed the casks in a purpose built limestone cellar for an further extended maturation period.

The limestone cellar was constructed in 2016 and maintains a constant temperature of 8°C/ 52°F. This stabilises the whisky and allows for much longer maturation without the harsher wood influence that happens at higher temperatures and humidity. For this first batch of Maker's Mark Cellar Aged the whiskies have been in the cellar for a further five or six years, meaning the whiskies are 11- and 12 years of age. They have then been married together in a ratio of 13% and 87% respectively.

Maker's Mark was founded in 1953 by T. William Samuels Sr. He purchased the 170 year old Burks Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky and decided to produce a premium whisky there. He changed the recipe to make wheated bourbon in 1954 - a wheated bourbon is one with wheat as the next highest percentage grain after corn when compared to regular bourbon mash bills - and the first bottling was released in 1959. It is also unusual for an American whisky in that the mash bill contains no rye.

Samuels' wife, Marjorie, is attributed with creating the name, designing the square-shaped bottle and label, and instigating the now-famous red wax seal. Each bottle is still dipped in wax by hand. The Maker's Mark distillery has an annual capacity of eight million litres and is owned by Beam Suntory.

The Maker's Mark Cellar Aged is bottled at the natural strength of 115 Proof/ 57.5% ABV and will be available in selected world markets. A bottle will cost £145. For more information on Maker's Mark Cellar Aged, please visit www.makersmark.com.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is deep copper gold and the nose is vibrant and uplifting. Aromas of vanilla, oak and charred orange zest mingle with milk chocolate, cinnamon, gingerbread and a pinch of cocoa powder. A hint of dark cherry and caramelised peach comes through at the end.

On the palate this whisky is intense and bright, but also velvety and silky. This is surprising given the high ABV. Super ripe stone and orchard fruits lead the way - think of apricot jam and peach compote with a hint of caramelised apple and pear. These notes are followed by plenty of sweetness in the form of vanilla fudge, caramel, milk chocolate and toffee. There is a hint of hazelnut praline underneath also.

The second half of the palate is dominated by wood and spice. This leads the whisky to becomes drier and more peppery towards the finish. The spices have a lovely warmth to them - imagine cinnamon and clove married with clove oil and gingerbread - and this drives the whisky on. The distinct oaky note is never far away but comes to the fore towards the end and creates great balance with the sweetness. A late hint of candied orange peel is also detected.

The finish is long and warming. The oak and spice dominate, especially once the sweeter and fruity elements fade away. Hints of cocoa powder and orange remain, as does the clove-like characteristic.

What's the verdict?

This is a superb whisky from Maker's Mark and one that shows clever and controlled innovation. The flavours are incredibly balanced and nuanced compared to a regular bourbon that has been aged for 11-12 years. The extra maturation in a much cooler environment must have contributed to this and makes us consider that what if age is not just about time. What if it is about how that time is used and where the whisky is maturing? Both concepts seem to have given a great deal to this whisky and it is well worth a taste if you get the opportunity.

The spring edition of Old Fitzgerald was a surprising 17 years old.  People went nuts.  Then Heaven Hill followed it up with a 19-year old release and enthusiasts clamored for it like no Old Fitzgerald before.  For the smart few who open their bottle, will it be worth the $240 price tag?  Plus, now with two extra-aged releases, are the days of 8 and 9-year Old Fitzgerald a thing of the past?  Heaven Hill certainly keeps us on our toes for each Spring and Fall release.

Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Fall 2022
Bourbon:        Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Decanter Series
Edition:          Fall 2022
Distillery:        Heaven Hill
Age:                19 years
ABV:              50% (100 proof)
Cost:               $240.00

Tasting Notes

Appearance:
Copper penny with a red hue.

Nose:
I expected more oak with the gaudy age statement.  It’s still deep with mature oak and leather, but it’s also nutty with butterscotch candy sweetness, rounded out with black tea and a heady, nectarous honeysuckle.

Taste:
The balance is remarkable.  With a creamy, buttery texture, the spicy oak coats your mouth as it shifts to vanilla, toffee, and pralines, and then turns back to oak with the full array of baking spices.

Finish:
The finish has a gear shift that I love, but at first, I mistook it as a short, flat finish.  After a quick burst it faded but then it rebounded with sustained warmth.  It’s oak-driven and dry, still with a touch of cocoa as it fades.

Bottom Line
Pair this with the Spring 2022 release of Old Fitzgerald and you have two of the top ten bourbons of the year, easily.  These are remarkable bourbons and strong buys.

What’s your favorite Willett Distillery expression?

Willett Distillery has a cult following of their Willett purple top bottles but have been missing a wheated bourbon .

Luckily for the Wheated King of Kentucky they have finally added a purple top wheater . To say Big Chief was excited when our great friend Adam Boothby handed him a bottle for his birthday is an understatement.

The Willett Distilling Company has remained under family ownership and operation at the same location since it was created in 1936.

Over the years the company has bottled whiskeys that range from 2 years of aging maturity up to 28 years and has been called “the big daddy of bourbon and rye bottling”.

We hope you enjoy Jim and Mike’s review.   Be sure to listen in to the podcast episode on your favorite platform for more information. Cheers!

Tasting Notes: Willett 8yr Wheated

Vital Stats: This Willett wheated Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey has been aged 8 years in #4 new American oak barrels. It has a mash bill of 65% corn, 20% wheat and 15% malted barley. It is 108 proof and has an MSRP of $259.

Appearance: Black whiskey style bottle with gold text. The whiskey is dark golden honey. We usually don’t like these bottles that you can’t see the goodness inside but we love this one. It’s like they made this for royalty .

Nose: A waft of chocolate with some Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It has dried fruits and sweet perfumes that makes it very floral. The proof makes it strong. Very little oak.

Palate: Balanced and not aggressive with a beautiful barrel spice. Cinnamon Toast Crunch with sprinkles of chocolate and milk in a glass. The dried fruits carry over and give you that surprisingly subtle sweetness.

Finish: Long with a nice wildcat Kentucky Hug that won’t overpower you.

Overall: This is an amazing bottle of bourbon that shouldn’t be passed on if you can afford it. It’s a buy for us and will be sipped on for special occasions. Cheers

A Little Old Elk Distillery History

What happens when you put together the Founder and Developer of OtterBox and the long time master distiller at MGP? Well, you get Old Elk Distillery, of course! Old Elk is based in Fort Collins, CO. But don’t go trying to find the distillery – you can’t – it’s not on the map! However, you can find The Reserve By Old Elk, their boutique cocktail bar, right there in downtown Fort Collins!

Mash Bill

Old Elk Wheated Bourbon is made with a mash bill of 51% corn, 45% wheat & 4% malted barley. That’s a lot of wheat!! In addition, the bourbon is aged a minimum of 5 years.

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Toffee, plums, tart and dark cherries, light cinnamon, brown sugar, light cedar & oak; relatively mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Toffee, oak, brown sugar, dark cherry
👉🏻Finish: Brown sugar sweetness and dark stone fruits continue into the finish and pick up some char and black pepper that linger for a long time, with cinnamon joining at the end; moderate burn

Old Elk Wheated Bourbon has noticeable sweetness, toffee, fruit and oak in the nose, but the alcohol seems fairly mild. The fruit is a bit reminiscent of a deeper Fruit Stripe Gum type flavor. The flavors continue into the taste, although the type of stone fruit seems to change along the way. They all continue into the finish, and pick up noticeable spice. The finish is long with a moderate burn.

Conclusion

This is a very easy to drink bourbon, similar to the Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It’s got a bit more sweetness and richness to it, which I am assuming is due to the very high wheat content. Overall, the flavors work well together to create an enjoyable pour.

Do you love cask strength whisky in the spring and summer?

Jim was down in southern Kentucky and stopped at Dueling Grounds Distillery for a visit. How have we missed this place? A historical sight where duels were fought for honor.
