For 41 years, the Port Ellen Distillery on Scotland’s Isle of Islay sat silent. Last month, a multi-million dollar restoration of the distillery was completed when the first spirit flowed at Port Ellen since 1983. While it’ll be years before we see new bottlings of Port Ellen, the distillery will be open to Islay visitors from around the world. Diageo’s Ewan Gunn was on hand when that first spirit flowed. He’s been part of the revival since it was announced in 2017, and joins us on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, The Demeter Collection auction raised £49,000 for the Our Whisky Foundation, while William Grant & Sons is expanding its Blended Scotch portfolio with a new range of whiskies.

Lux Row Distillers announced this week the introduction of Rebel 100 6-Year Bourbon, 100 proof (50% abv), handcrafted according to the original, time-honored wheated recipe since 1849. The backstory on this brand is fascinatingly extensive, it being fruit from the original Stitzel-Weller Distillery tree, owned by the legendary icon Julian Van Winkle I (aka “Pappy”). It being part of Julian’s now coveted wheated Bourbon whiskies.

PRICING & AVAILABILITY: The new addition will be available nationwide later this month at a suggested retail price of $59.99 per 750 ml bottle.

“Rebel 100 6-Year demonstrates that age is never a bad thing,” said Lux Row Distillers Master Distiller John Rempe. “The combination of spotlighting our original recipe and aging it for six years resulted in a rich and rebellious, full flavor bourbon that I think will resonate with consumers. Six years is a long time to wait, but the wait was worth it.”

Lux Row Distillers (Bardstown, KY)this week announced the release of Rebel Small Batch Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, featuring barrels that were hand-selected by Lux Row Distillers Master Distiller John Rempe and blended into small batches. A limited allocation is set to reach retail shelves across the country later this month at a suggested retail price of $34.99 per 750 ml bottle.

Rebel Small Batch Reserve features some of the finest barrels from Rebel’s traditional four-year-old wheated-bourbon mash bill, bottled at 110 proof to deliver a more intense flavor. The resulting bourbon features an aroma containing rich scents of honey, vanilla and caramel; a palate of dark fruit, caramel and vanilla with robust tones from the barrel; and a warm finish, followed by a light spice.

“It’s always a pleasure to set aside notable barrels to release in small batches, as it provides fans of our bourbons the opportunity to enjoy the brands they love in a unique way,” said Rempe. “Rebel Small Batch Reserve is an example of taking the same time-honored wheated recipe created in 1849 and presenting it in a small-batch format and at 110 proof. The result is an exceptionally bold, yet dependably smooth, take on Rebel that consumers are certain to love.”

Lux Row Distillers announced the newest variant in the Rebel brand family: Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey. Rebel 100 Rye will retail at a suggested price of $19.99 per 750 ml bottle.

Eric Winter, brand manager for Rebel says:
Based on the continued success of both Rebel 100 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, we've elevated the proof of its rye counterpart. Rebel 100 Rye drinkers still will enjoy the award-winning smooth, spicy rye flavor of Rebel Rye at a proof level that amplifies its taste profile and stands out even better in classic cocktails.

Rebel 100 Rye contains a mash bill of 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% malt and 'features a spicy nose that opens into rich rye flavor balanced by hints of vanilla'. Like the name says, this comes in at 100 proof (50% alcohol).

My Take

Nice to see a cheap option come in at a 100 proof level and at a great price point. This is worth checking out if you're looking for a good rye mixer or want to give a cheaper option a try.
