Angel’s Envy is continuing to spread its wings with an announcement of its distillery expansion plans for 2024.

The acclaimed brand broke ground in 2013 as it hasn’t slowed down since. In 2023, Angel’s Envy unveiled an impressive $8.2 million distillery expansion including 5 tasting rooms, gorgeous events space, new kitchen, and showcase bar.

2024 campus growth was recently announced with the acquiring of a parking lot across the street from its distillery headquarters in downtown Louisville. Renderings reveal a pedway connecting to a new building sector.

Here’s a brand statement regarding the projected upcoming expansion:

Angel’s Envy has grown significantly over the past several years, and the team is excited to accelerate that growth in 2024 and beyond, while continuing to keep our guests and downtown Louisville community at the heart of everything we do. As part of this effort, we have purchased the parking lot on the corner of Jackson St. and Main St. – which is located across the street from our distillery in downtown Louisville – and will be exploring expansion opportunities on the property. This is in addition to our current investment in Henry County. We’ve completed several warehouses on our Henry County property to date, and we are looking forward to building, strengthening long-term relationships, and driving local impact in both Henry County and downtown Louisville. Overall, we are exploring expansion opportunities throughout the region but cannot share firm plans at this time.

PRESS RELEASE: Provided by Michter’s Distillery

For the first time ever, an American distillery has taken home the highest honor in whisky.

Michter’s, a Louisville, Kentucky-based bourbon and rye producer, eclipsed the biggest names from Scotland, Japan, Ireland, and beyond to rank first overall in the newly-released 2023 World’s Most Admired Whiskies top 50 list published by Drinks International. With this stunning recognition, Michter’s joins a winner’s circle of iconic brands including Yamazaki and Springbank.

Michter’s was ranked by Drinks International #1 in their 2022 “Top 10 Trending Brands” for American Whiskey.

The results, which are determined by an Academy of independent global drinks buyers, journalists, bartenders and whisky experts from more than 20 countries, represent the pinnacle of achievement in the global whisky trade and certify that American whiskey is finally being recognized for its excellence by connoisseurs around the world. In its significance, and perhaps even shock value, this thrilling announcement harkens back to the Judgment of Paris in 1976, when a Napa chardonnay and a Napa cabernet sauvignon prevailed over esteemed counterparts from Burgundy and Bordeaux in a landmark blind tasting that demolished critical expectations and sent the international image of American wine soaring.

“I could not be prouder of what this means not only for Michter’s, but for the American whiskey community as a whole,” said Andrea Wilson, Michter’s Master of Maturation, former Chair of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame member. “It is the ultimate recognition of the attention to detail, discipline, rigor and focus on excellence that has characterized high-end American whiskey production for many years now. At home, we’ve always had tremendous belief in our approach, but then you would travel abroad and see bourbon placed on the bottom shelf almost automatically in many parts of the world so it is really exciting to see it reach such high regard. This means so much to our team and we couldn’t be more humbled to celebrate this moment in American whiskey with our friends throughout the industry,” Wilson continued.

For Michter’s President and fellow Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame member Joseph J. Magliocco, Michter’s being named the World’s Most Admired Whiskey caps a remarkable run that began in the 1990s with him and his two brothers acquiring for US$245 the Michter’s trademark, which had been abandoned, thereby obtaining the rights to the brand he had once sold as a summer job during the late 1970s.

“This is a great day for American whiskey and a great day for Michter’s,” remarked Magliocco. “We are so grateful to the Academy and to all the people who have done so much over the years to make this possible. I can’t put into words how thrilled and how honored all of us at Michter’s are. From my first days of learning about the heritage of Michter’s in Pennsylvania through the subsequent time our team has spent resurrecting the brand in Kentucky, we have always hoped that people would appreciate the brand’s legacy and dedication to quality. But if you told me that one day Michter’s would be named the World’s Most Admired Whiskey, well, I would’ve thought you’d had one too many.”

According to Shay Waterworth, Editor of Drinks International, “Michter’s is officially the trade’s favourite whiskey. Not only does the brand have a fascinating back story, it’s also making some of the best whiskies in the world right now and clearly our global Academy agrees with me. Every trade show I attend I see a crowd of bartenders, importers and buyers surrounding the Michter’s stand, which further justifies its place at the top of our esteemed ranking. It’s also great for the trade to have its first American whiskey sit atop The World’s Most Admired Whiskies, my congratulations go to the whole Michter’s team for this great success.”

To Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee, this watershed moment celebrates the passion and dedication of many individuals along the way. He commented, “I would like to thank the Academy for this extraordinary honor on behalf of our entire team, past and present. It reflects the decades of hard work and passing down of knowledge from generation to generation that it took to arrive at this point. From each and every person at Michter’s to all of our trade partners and friends, this would not be possible without you. I am tremendously grateful and honored.”

Will Michter’s being named the World’s Most Admired Whiskey catalyze even more global appreciation for America’s native spirit? That remains to be seen, but it is certainly a landmark step in that direction.

Beyond its main distillery in the Shively section of Louisville, Michter’s operations extend to two other sites in Kentucky. In Springfield, Michter’s is farming estate grown grain on its 205-acre property, while in downtown Louisville, Michter’s has its second distillery in the historic Fort Nelson Building. Situated in a prime location on West Main Street opposite Louisville Slugger and on the same block as the Frazier Museum, Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery features the legendary pot still system from Michter’s Pennsylvania. It also has educational tours with whiskey tastings and The Bar at Fort Nelson, which features classic cocktails curated by spirits and cocktail historian David Wondrich.

PRESS RELEASE: Provided by J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery

J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, created by Jeff Mattingly, a descendant of distilling pioneer John Graves Mattingly, opened its distillery today in Frankfort, Ky.  The new distillery features 23,000 square feet, which includes a gift shop, tasting bar, a small pot still, and a premier custom bourbon blending experience.  The distillery will offer tours, tastings and the custom bourbon blending experience every day but Sundays.

Previously located in Georgetown, Ky., the new location at 20 Reilly Road in Frankfort, Ky. is part of a $6 million investment which will also add up to 50 new jobs.  That investment is projected to grow as the distillery starts distilling on site, and eventually adds a second column still and barrel warehouses on property purchased in Shelby County, Ky.  The addition of the column still carries on the 19th century Mattingly innovation of the coffee column still which greatly enhances continuous production of bourbon.

A grand opening took place last week with Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Ray Perry speaking, joined by Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson; President of J. Mattingly 1845 Harry Richart IV; and Cameron Mattingly, vice president of production.

One could say Jeff Mattingly has bourbon in his blood.  His ancestor John Graves Mattingly started his first distillery in 1845.  Although the distillery was Registered Distillery #2, it is reported his distillery may have been the first registered distillery in Kentucky.  The Mattingly name is so ingrained with distilling there have been at least nine distilleries in Kentucky in which a Mattingly had a hand in developing.  The family also has connections to some of the most prolific bourbon barons in the industry, including George Garvin Brown of Brown Forman, the Willett family, and the Samuels family, with Margie Mattingly Samuels creating the iconic Maker’s Mark packaging, label, bottle shape and famous red wax.

Today, current owner Jeff Mattingly, alongside his son Cameron, carry on the Mattingly family mantle and continue to innovate, much like their ancestors did.  Each batch of their flagship J. Mattingly 1845 Bourbon is a custom, one-of-a-kind blend, using a proprietary double stave process to add texture, richness and depth before it is expertly blended by the J. Mattingly 1845 production team.

Visitors to the new location in Frankfort will have the opportunity to participate in a state-of-the-art custom blending experience, which allows them to blend their own bottle from a combination of hand-selected barrels of Kentucky bourbon, wheated bourbon or rye whiskey, then choose their bottle, customize their label, and choose their wax color, offering a premiere hands-on experience not found at any other distillery.

mattingly

“We’re excited to be in Frankfort and we appreciate the warm welcome we’ve received from the community,” said Jeff Mattingly, founder and owner of J. Mattingly 1845.  “Our slogan is ‘One Hell of a Pick,’ which came about when I was blending a batch with some bourbon experts from around the United States and it was so good we proclaimed it ‘One Hell of a Pick.’  That batch and that slogan will always have special meaning to me since it was one of the first bourbons sold and marketed in over 100 years under the Mattingly family name.  Now, we’re starting another new chapter with our move to Frankfort, and we look forward to helping our guests blend their own ‘One Hell of a Pick!’”

The J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery will be open for tours, tastings, and the J. Mattingly custom bourbon blending experience Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Closed on Sundays.  Reservations are not required but are encouraged, especially for the custom blending experience.  Reservations can be made online at www.JMattingly1845.com.

 About J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery

The Mattingly family has been synonymous with distilling in Kentucky for more than two centuries, having a hand in the development of at least nine separate distilleries in the Commonwealth, and with connections to some of the most illustrious names in the distilling industry, including George Garvin Brown, the Willetts and the Samuels.

It all started in 1845, with John Graves Mattingly’s first distillery in Marion County, Kentucky, Registered Distillery #2.  Many historians today believe his distillery was the first registered distillery in Kentucky.

In 2010 Jeff Mattingly took up the family mantle and started his own craft bourbon business.  Today, Jeff’s son Cameron has joined the team as Vice President of Production, continuing the legacy into the latest generation for J. Mattingly Distillery 1845 in Frankfort, Kentucky. For more information about J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery visit www.JMattingly1845.com.

Often referred to as the founding father of the modern bourbon industry, Taylor was one of Buffalo Trace Distillery’s former owners and an instrumental figure in the movement that led to the 1897 passage of the Bottled in Bond Act. “100 Bourbon Sets for 100 Charities” pays homage to 100 proof, one of the many things required to be Bottled in Bond.

“E.H. Taylor contributed countless innovations to the bourbon industry in his time, but one of his most notable contributions was leading efforts that eventually resulted in the Bottled in Bond Act being passed,” said Andrew Duncan, Brand Director, Buffalo Trace Distillery. “At its core, Taylor’s support of the Bottled in Bond Act was about bettering the bourbon category for everyone – consumer, distillers, and communities. This passion for improving the world is one that continues at Buffalo Trace Distillery to this day, and we are proud to support nonprofit organizations in their efforts to make their neighborhoods a better place to call home.”

Featured products for the “100 Bourbon Sets for 100 Charities” initiative include lineups from some of Buffalo Trace Distillery’s most sought-after brands, including E.H. Taylor, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare, Weller and more. The number of bottles in each set may vary. Interested nonprofits can register their organization here

“Giving back and supporting organizations is important to us at Buffalo Trace Distillery,” said Duncan. “We are humbled by the work our partners continue to do and honored to be able to support them in their efforts.”

Charities of all kinds are encouraged to apply for “100 Bourbon Sets for 100 Charities.” All entries must be received within 100 days – by January 4, 2024 – for consideration. Selected charities will be announced February 29, 2024 in honor of Bottled in Bond Day that Sunday, March 3. Bottles sets will be delivered within 30 days following the selection announcement. Organizations MUST use their bottle sets and report back their monies raised by August 1, 2024.

Buffalo Trace Distillery will coordinate the logistics of transporting bottles to selected organizations based on the legal requirements in each state. Proceeds will be announced September 2024 in celebration of National Bourbon Heritage Month.

The Bottled in Bond Act was first-of-its kind legislation that saved whiskey in America. Passage of the Act led to increased quality and consumer safety across categories (and the formation of the modern FDA) and paved the way for the focus on quality & innovation that Buffalo Trace Distillery maintains today.

Bottled in Bond required distillers to label aged spirits, mostly American Whiskey, as “bottled-in-bond,” meaning the product meets the following criteria:

·       The spirit must be produced in a single distillation season by a single distillery.

·       The spirit must mature in a U.S. bonded warehouse for a minimum of four years.

·       The aged spirit must be bottled at 50% ABV (or, 100 proof).

It was recently announced the Covington, KY (Northern Kentucky) blending business is now a member of the Kentucky Distillers Association (KDA) at the Craft Level meaning they age at or less than 10,000 barrels.

Wenzel offers the opportunity to blend your own whiskey from their carefully curated whiskey stock. For a more thorough rundown on our first hand experience at WW, CLICK HERE. Located at 15 Tobacco Alley in Covington, Northern Kentucky natives Austin Dunbar, Tony Milburn, Todd McMurty and Nic Manning opened Wenzel Whiskey in 2022 and resurrected the historic company. Before Prohibition, the Wenzel Building was a rectifier for whiskey.

Wenzel Whiskey currently produces Wenzel’s Proprietors’ Blend, the first whiskey to be produced in Covington since Prohibition. Wenzel also has a Barrel Proof Rye, a blend of six and seven-year barrels of Indiana rye, and a Wheated #1  six-year-old barrel-proof expression.

WW also has acquired $3 million worth of distilling equipment and barrels of Bourbon from Savannah’s Ghost Coast Distillery, allowing them to accelerate and expand its production facilities sooner than expected.

“We are thrilled to begin producing our very own Kentucky Bourbons and to share them with the world,” Dunbar said.

Most of their blended offerings are made by the consumer themselves. “Wenzel guests can blend their own bottle just for the house or create a 100-bottle blend for their family or firm,” Dunbar said. “We offer an experience that is as unique as you want it to be.”

Beam Institute of Kentucky Spirits on the University of Kentucky’s campus in Lexington. Bourbon is a game of chess, not checkers. It’s a long game if you will. The positive effects of this will take time to notice, just a like fine aging Kentucky Bourbon. But make no mistake, it will have a tremendous impact on the future landscape of American distilling.

“This is the largest teaching distillery in the United States and in the world,” said Seth DeBolt, institute director and UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment professor. “It will allow us to train the next generation of distillers and researchers, and to conduct cutting-edge research on the science of spirits production.”

The new UK campus facilities include a research distillery building, with a 30-foot column still as the centerpiece, and the Independent Stave Company – Boswell Family Barrel Warehouse. The maturation facility allows the Beam Institute to experiment with barrel aging spirits produced in its research distillery.

“Today’s ceremony reinforces our commitment to investing in our students and Kentucky’s future,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “It also reinforces the importance of our essential partnerships that will help us advance Kentucky. This new facility will help leverage transdisciplinary work and show students that the distilling industry needs employees from a vast array of disciplines and majors.”

The Beam Institute offers engineering, chemistry, business, law, horticulture, forestry, food science, and entomology courses to address spirits industry needs in sustainable agriculture, research and development and more. DeBolt said students will begin learning in the new facilities this fall.

The cutting edge institution is a multidisciplinary effort of experts from the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences and Gatton College of Business and Economics. Essentially, the program integrates both the biz and the science of the Bourbon industry.

“When Beam Suntory first partnered with the University of Kentucky to create the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits, we did so as an investment in the future of bourbon and the future of Kentucky’s workforce,” said Alex Alvarez, chief supply chain officer at Beam Suntory. “The institute has firmly established itself as a forum for continuing education and research, as well as collaboration across the industry to tackle some of our toughest challenges together. We’re proud to be an active partner in this work, pushing our industry toward a bright future.”

Just imagine if something like this existed even 10 years ago. Think how much more developed and advanced the available workforce would be in the distilling industry. Instead of graduating from a university, then having to gain that critical experience working at an actual distillery, this expedites the learning curve exponentially.

15 years ago, there were less than 100 distilleries in the country. Now, there are over 2,000. Will this program serve to benefit all scales of spirit making, from the behemoths to the startups? Time will tell, but that seems like a very safe bet.

And just like that…American beer institution Molson Coors has bought Blue Run Spirits (est 2020), that snazzy newer brand with the poppin’ butterfly bottle logo, for a non-disclosed amount.

It’s interesting to see a colossal beer company show this kind of interest in American Whiskey. Putting the shoe on the other foot, what would the reaction be to see Maker’s Mark buy a trendy recently formed craft beer brand? Pure speculation, but this move ultimately feels like a compliment and further demonstration of confidence in the future strength of Bourbon (American Whiskey overall).

Coors already has an established footprint in the whiskey category. It launched its own Five Trail American Whiskey in September 2021. Barmen 1873 Bourbon (Spring 2023) was its second brand release. Technically, they’re already in the game.

Coors stated this move is all about bolstering the premiumization of its spirits portfolio.

“Molson Coors has been on a journey to broaden beyond our beer roots and build powerful brands in growing categories, and Blue Run joining us is an exciting next step as we establish Coors Spirits Co.,” Molson Coors’ Chief Commercial Officer Michelle St. Jacques said. “Blue Run has accomplished in three years what many brands hope to do in a generation and has done it at the luxury end of the whiskey category. Importantly, we are committed to maintaining Blue Run’s well-known quality, design and innovation as we continue to grow our spirits portfolio.”

When you think about it, the crossover between whiskey and beer from a production viewpoint ain’t the craziest thing in the world. The metamorphical journey of each start out pretty much identical.

About Blue Run Spirits

BRS was founded in 2020 by Mike Montgomery, Tim Sparapani, Jesse McKnight and Andy Brown. None of which were in the spirits profession prior to founding BRS.

Their strategy goes hand-in-hand with a unique term they labeled as “sneakerizing” the whiskey business. Meaning eye popping bottle designs. Limited releases. They sought the expertise of Nike design expert Devon McKinney, famous for his role in the Air Force One.

What’s Next?

All BRS founders will all remain with the brand. Montgomery will take on an expanded role with Molson Coors as its vice president of Coors Spirits Co. Bourbon Hall of Famer Jim Rutledge will continue to serve as Blue Run’s distillery consultant and liquid advisor and recognized, whiskey community rising star Shaylyn Gammon will serve as whiskey curator for Coors Spirits Co. David Coors will continue to lead Molson Coors’ full-strength spirits strategy and business development as executive chair of Coors Spirits Co.

“Since launching Blue Run, we have always strived to do things a little differently to truly embrace today’s younger, more diverse generation of whiskey drinkers,” Montgomery said. “We are humbled by how the whiskey community has embraced our vision and that Molson Coors wants to join and support us in this journey.”

THE BRS DISTILLERY?…In March 2023, BRS dropped big news of plans to create a $50M state of the art distillery in Georgetown, KY (just outside Lexington).
