Master Blender Billy Leighton’s recent decision to step aside from day to day work at Irish Distillers gave his longtime apprentice the dream job of a lifetime. Dave McCabe is the new Master Blender for Jameson, Redbreast, Powers, and other Irish Whiskey brands, and we’ll talk with him on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth.

In the news, Irish Whiskey exports posted a decline in 2023, while Islay’s Ardnahoe Distillery is shutting down part of its visitors center. We’ll have the details on those and other stories, including another new distillery for Kentucky.

RD1? What does that mean?

Are you familiar with RD1 Spirits? Well, let me acquaint you. RD1 stands for Registered Distillery One, the first registered distillery in central Kentucky. What was that first distillery, you may very well ask? Well, it was the Ashland Distillery, in Lexington! While Ashland was established in 1865, it had quite the short life, distilling only from 1868-1869. Ashland was subsequently acquired by William Tarr and Thomas J. Megibben in 1871 and production returned. You may recognize William Tarr as the namesake of the first whiskey that RD1 Spirits produced. The William Tarr line has since been retired, and the RD ONE line is now taking its place.

What we have here is RD1 Spirits first release under the new RD ONE line. It is their soon to be released RD ONE Straight Kentucky Bourbon, finished with French Oak.

Tasting Notes – RD ONE Bourbon Finished with French Oak

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Pear, caramel, cherry, oak, cedar, light honey and raisin; bit of smoke; some milk chocolate way in the back; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, oak, cherry, brown sugar and honey
👉🏻Finish: Black pepper spice builds rapidly and lingers; sweetness gradually fades away. Long finish with a moderate burn.

A Deceptive Bourbon, In A Good Way

This is a very deceptive bourbon, but in a good way. Initially, it starts off fairly softly, with some nice fruits, caramels, honey, and even a bit of milk chocolate way in the back, but also bit of telltale smoke. Similar notes continue into the taste, with a pleasant brown sugar and honey sweetness. However, in the finish, there is an abrupt change of course, with black pepper spice rapidly rising to the forefront, trampling the other flavors as it does. Finally, the finish lingers for a good long time.

Conclusion – RD ONE Bourbon Finished With French Oak

I am very much enjoying this bourbon. The spice in the finish is quite the surprise, but it really creates a nice contrast to the sweeter flavors up front. I am assuming that is the French oak at work. Have you tried any of the whiskeys from RD1? What did you think? Cheers!🥃

We hope you have enjoyed our RD ONE Bourbon Finished With French Oak Review! Although they are no longer releasing it, their William Tarr whiskeys were quite good. Check out our Old Wm Tarr Machester Reserve Whiskey Review to learn more!
