The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced the launch of its oldest single malt whisky to date - The Glenallachie 35 years old. The whisky has been released to represent the distillery’s unwavering commitment to cask craftsmanship and small-batch whiskies, and has been crafted by Billy Walker, the owner and Master Distiller at Glenallachie.  

For this landmark bottling, Walker selected six ex-bourbon barrels that were distilled and filled in the summer of 1989. This was shortly after he had taken over the distillery and he quickly identified the potential of these six casks. They were transferred to four ex-sherry casks (three ex-Pedro Ximenez and one ex-Oloroso) and two virgin American oak casks in 2017 for a seven year secondary maturation.

The Glenallachie distillery is located close to the town of Aberlour in the Speyside whisky region in Scotland. It was founded by Mackinlay, McPherson & Co. in 1967 and was designed by renowned distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. Glenallachie translates as 'valley of the rocks' from Gaelic. The current owners are The Glenallachie Distillers Co. who took over in mid-2017. They have switched focus from the previous owners Pernod Ricard, who used it to supply malt for several blends. The annual capacity is four million litres, although it is currently operating at a quarter of that.

The Glenallachie 35 years old is presented in a wide-shouldered decanter and oak casket that features hand carving and brass detailing. This also features a booklet filled with Walker's handwritten tasting notes and the story of each cask. The limited edition whisky is bottled at 48% ABV and is available from specialist and luxury retailers worldwide. A bottle will cost £1,475.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is a deep coppery amber and the nose is rich with a mix of sweet and savoury aromas. It kicks off being very nutty (think of walnut and hazelnut especially) and chocolate-like. Then comes some dried fruits in the form of raisin, sultana and candied orange with a hint of date. Underneath are further aromas of cocoa powder, old cigar box and sandalwood.

On the palate this whisky feels silky, rich and viscous. Again the lead characteristics are chocolate, nuts and dried fruit - the combination is reminiscent of a fruit and nut milk chocolate bar. Toasted hazelnut, walnut and brazils marry with raisin, sultana and dates to great effect. Then comes dominant notes of caramel and vanilla toffee with a hint of dark treacle. There are also hints of mocha, baked apple and gingerbread that evolve. 

The whisky becomes more savoury with time. There is a distinct leathery and earthy note that develops, plus some dusty baking spices - imagine cinnamon, ginger and clove here. Later notes of cocoa powder and bitter orange oil also come through, along with that old cigar box vibe from the nose.

The finish is long and decadent. It seems to go on forever. The chocolate and dried fruit notes are the first to fade, but it is a slow process. Then the nutty characterisitics. This leaves the savoury and dusty spice notes to take hold and pull the finish out even more. A woody dryness develops to give a lovely finale.

What's The Verdict?

This is a stunning whisky and one that shows the sympathetic cask management needed for maturing spirit to this sort of age. The depth of character and the complexity is fabulous - there are so many layers and the balance between the sweet and savoury characteristics is spot on. 

We were delighted to have been invited to the launch event in London and Billy hinted that they have even older stock that came as part of the distillery purchase in 2017. Only time will tell what they choose to do with that but if any is as good as this whisky, then they will have done well.

The American whiskey brand of Elijah Craig has announced the launch of a new rye expression in to the UK - the Elijah Craig Straight Rye. The spirits has a mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. This heavy reliance on corn as the secondary grain makes the spirit highly suited to long maturation, which has enabled this rye whiskey to reach eight years of age. It is said to be perfect for such classic American whiskey cocktails as the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. The Elijah Craig Straight Rye is bottled at 47% ABV (94 Proof) and is now available from selected specialist retailers in the UK. A bottle will cost £45.
 


The Loch Lomond distillery has released one of its oldest whiskies to date - the Loch Lomond 50 years old single malt. The spirit was distilled in 1973 using unpeated malted barley and distilled through Loch Lomond's unique straight-necked pot stills. This small pocket of stock has been matured initially in re-fill American oak casks, then transferred to first-fill ex-bourbon casks in 2011 and finally ex-Oloroso sherry hogsheads in 2017. The final yield is just 100 bottles and has been overseen by Michael Henry, the Master Blender for Loch Lomond. 
 
The new bottling joins the distillery's premium whisky collection and is presented in a lead crystal decanter designed by Glencairn Crystal and a natural oak wooden casket. It is released at the natural cask strangth of 42.6% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. The Loch Lomond 50 years old is available now at www.lochlomondwhiskies.com and through selected specialist whisky retailers world wide. A bottle will cost £25,000.



The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie have announced the latest addition to their peated Meikle Tòir range - the Meikle Tòir Turbo 2024 Edition. The whisky is made using spirit made using peat from the Scottish mainland to smoke the barley to a level of 70ppm (phenol parts per million). This has then undergone a 160-hour fermentation, which is three times longer than regular Glenallachie. It is bottled at five years of age and this batch consists of just five American virgin oak casks and four ex-Oloroso sherry hogsheads.

The Meikle Tòir range has been created by Billy Walker, the Master Whisky Maker for Glenallachie. Three expressions form the core range - The Original, The Sherry One and The Chinquapin One - with the Turbo joining as an annual release. The Turbo 2024 Edition is bottled at 50% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. It will be available in specialist whisky retailers worldwide and will cost £56 per bottle.

The blended malt brand of Rock Island, part of independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co's Remarkable Regional Malts range, has revealed its latest limited edition - the Rock Island Tequila Cask Finished. It follows a series of similar releases using unorthodox cask types. As with all Rock Island whiskies, this contains only single malts from the Scottish islands - these include Arran, Islay, Jura and Orkney. they have been married together and then finished in ex-Tequila barrels sourced from Mexico.

The Rock Island Tequila Cask Finished is released at 48% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. It will be available via www.douglaslaing.com and selected specialist retailers in the UK. The exact numbers of bottles has not been revealed but each will cost £65.
 



The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie have announced two limited editions to join their Wood Collection, which highlights some of the best European wine casks. The pair will each be exclusive in different regions - the Glenallachie Wood Collection Sauternes Wine Cask Finish 12 years old (pictured, above right) for the UK market and the Glenallachie Wood Collection Ruby Port Cask Finish 10 years old (pictured, above left) for Europe. Both expressions underwent initial maturation in ex-bourbon casks.

The pair of whiskies have been created by Billy Walker, the co-owner and Master Distiller at Glenallachie, who hand-selected the finishing casks from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux in France and Douro Valley in Portugal. Both are bottled at 48% ABV and are non-chill filtered and of natural colour. The Sauternes Wine Cask Finish 12 years old will be available via specialist whisky retailers in the UK, with the Ruby Port Cask Finish 10 years old likewise in Europe. Both are priced at £62 per bottle.
 
 
 

The Islay distillery of Ardbeg has announced the second bottling in their annual Anthology Series - the Ardbeg Anthology: The Unicorn's Tale 14 years old. It follows the inaugural The Harpy's Tale 13 years old release and the series is designed to celebrate marrying classic Ardbeg with unorthodox flavours. It is the first Ardbeg expression to feature a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Madeira wine barrels, both aged for 14 years, both selected and married by Dr. Bill Lumsden - the Director of Whisky Creation at Ardbeg.
 
The Ardbeg Anthology: The Unicorn's Tale 14 years old is bottled at 46% ABV and will be available via www.ardbeg.com, Ardbeg Embassies worldwide, the distillery visitor centre on Islay, and selected specialist retailers in selected global markets. A bottle will cost £130.
 
"At Ardbeg we love to experiment and push our spirit’s smoky balance into new worlds of flavour. Some time ago, we decided to try maturing Ardbeg in unusual cask types to create sweet and smoky ‘hybrids’– and so the Anthology Collection was born. The Unicorn’s Tale is classic Ardbeg matured in bourbon casks with a parcel of whisky wholly matured in sweet Madeira wine casks."

The Glenallachie 15 years old sees initial maturation in ex-bourbon, before a lengthy finishing period in ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons and butts. Previously, bottlings were rare with most spirit going into popular blends such as Ballantine's and Chivas Regal. The annual production capacity is four million litres, although Walker has reduced this to around 750,000 litres per year.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is deep amber and the nose is rich, bold and with a delicious fruity sweetness. Aromas of dark dried fruits (think of raisins, currants and dates especially) rise from the glass and are quickly joined by caramel, manuka honey and treacle sponge pudding. Underneath sit further aromas of candied orange, dark chocolate and cedarwood.

On the palate this whisky is rich, luscious and velvety. Notes of dark caramel and sweet hazelnut praline come through immediately and are soon joined by the dark dried fruits from the nose - imagine brandy-soaked raisins, juicy currants and figs. Add in some sticky date pudding and treacle tart for extra depth and complexity. Underneath sit hints of dark chocolate, cocoa powder and mocha.

With time, more savoury characteristics begin to evolve. The cedarwood from the nose is first to appear, along with something resembling antique furniture and old cigar box. Woody baking spices, such as cinnamon and cassia build up slowly, and are joined by hints of orange oil and espresso coffee. The combination with the sweeter and fruitier elements is exquisite.

The finish is long and rich. The sweetness lingers well and slowly fades, as does the dried fruitiness. This brings the savoury woody and spicy characteristics to the fore and these drag out the finish superbly. The whisky becomes pleasantly dry and warming, and begs for another sip.

What's The Verdict?

This is a beautiful whisky from Glenallachie and exactly how a good ex-sherry cask Scotch single malt should be. It is rich and luxurious in feel, and balances the sweet and fruity notes superbly with the darker and more savoury ones. Definitely one to search out, especially of you are a fan of ex-sherry cask influenced whiskies. It also comes in at a decent price for a 15 year old these days and gives good value for it.

The independent bottler of Gordon & Macphail has launched the fourth whisky in its Mr. George Legacy series. The series honours George Urqhart, a legendary figure in Gordon & Macphail's history and widely regarded as 'the father of Scotch single malt'. The bottling features a single first-fill ex-sherry butt that was filled at Glen Grant distillery in 1958, nurtured by G&M for 65 years and then bottled in November 2023. It is released at 56.5% ABV and will cost £7,500.
 


The Spirit of Yorkshire have announced their first special release of the year - the Filey Bay Porter Cask. The new limited edition features spirit distilled in 2018 and filled to ex-bourbon casks that had previously held Rip Curl porter from the brand's sister brewery, Top Wold. In turn, Rip Curl had been matured for 15 months in ex-Filey Bay casks. There are just 2,000 bottles. It is released at 50% ABV and will cost £80.
 


The Irish single pot still brand of Redbreast has released the fourth whiskey into its Iberian Series - the Redbreast Cuatro Bariles Edition. The new bottling will be exclusive to the travel retail sector. It features a combination of four distinct cask types - ex-bourbon, Spanish oak ex-sherry butts, ex-Tawny Port hogsheads and European virgin oak. It is bottled at 46% ABV and will cost €108.
 


The Islay farm distillery of Kilchoman have announced a new addition to their core range - the Kilchoman Batch Strength. It joins the Machir Bay and Sanaig expressions. The whisky has been matured in a combination of re-charred ex-red wine casks, ex-Oloroso sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels. It has been bottled at 57% ABV and will be available worldwide. A bottle will cost £65.
 


The Highland distillery of Dalmore has launched the second bottling of its prestigious Luminary Series. The Dalmore Luminary - The Rare 2024 Edition has seen Gregg Glass, Master Whisky Maker at Dalmore, and Richard Paterson OBE, Master Distiller at Dalmore, collaborate with Melodie Leung, Director at Zaha Hadid Architects. Leung created the extraordinary sculptural housing for the bottle. 
 
The Rare comprises of a 49-year old whisky, matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks and finished in a blend of Port Colheita 1963, Apostoles sherry, ex-bourbon and a unique 1951/virgin oak hybrid cask. Just one bottle exists and will be auctioned by Sotherby's in May. All proceeds will go to the V&A Dundee.


Alongside The Rare bottling, another has been released for worldwide distribution. The Dalmore Luminary - The Collectible 2024 Edition features a small percentage of rare peated Dalmore spirit. The whisky is bottld at 16 years old and has been matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Apostoles sherry casks, plus ex-Tawny Port pipes. There are 20,000 bottles and each will retail for £275.
 


The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has released a trio of ex-sherry cask whiskies in its Wood Collection series. A second trio will be released later in 2024. The Glenallachie 'Sherry Series' Wood Collection features three single malts at nine years of age - the Fino Cask Finish, Amontillado Cask Finish and Oloroso Cask Finish. All are bottled at 48% ABV and are both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Each will cost £60.
 


The Danish whisky brand of Stauning has launched a new hybrid whisky featuring single malt and rye. Stauning HØST (pronounced 'hurst' and meaning 'harvest' in Danish) pays homage to the turning seasons and local cereals used to produce the whisky. The single malt and rye whiskies have been matured in ex-bourbon casks with a small percentage of ex-Port barrels. The new expression is bottled at 40.5% ABV and is expected to retail for £45.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is coppery gold and the nose is fruity, floral and rich. Aromas of raisin, prune and caramel mingle with hard toffee, milk chocolate and toasted hazelnut to begin. Further depth is added as aromas of orange oil, cinnamon bark and mocha evolve. Hints of sultana, vanilla pod and dusty wood shavings sit in the background.

On the palate this whisky is rich, sweet and velvety. Luscious and luxurious dried fruits lead the way - think of raisin, sultana, Cognac-soaked prune and candied orange peel. These are joined by hints of juicy peach and apricot, plus some butterscotch sauce and runny honey. These initial characteristics are underpinned by a distinct malty quality and some green apple, which evolves nicely.

Underneath are further notes of milk chocolate and hazelnut praline with a hint of toasted almond. A pinch of cocoa powder and some mocha add depth and complexity. All the time, a distinct warming spiciness is building - think of cinnamon, all-spice and nutmeg with suggestions of clove and liquorice root. The caramel from the nose returns right at the end.

The finish is long and rich. It becomes increasingly dry, woody and spicy. This is especially true once the sweet caramel and honey-like notes, plus the dried fruit characteristics start to fade. This leaves drying wood tannins and a distinct nuttiness to the fore, which is accentuated by warm baking spices.

What's The Verdict?

The Glenallachie 12 years old is a delicious whisky and one that perfectly demonstrates how good ex-sherry cask Speyside single malts can be. It is a perfect example of the style. The richness and sweetness leads the way but there is so much depth and complexity that each sip is different. This is also still selling for a decent price in a world where whisky prices, especially those with sherry cask maturation, are ever increasing. Definitely worth buying for your whisky shelf.

Meikle Tòir, which translates from Gaelic as 'big pursuit', is a new peated single malt brand from the Speyside distillery of Glenallachie. The range features peated spirit produced at Glenallachie since Master Blender Billy Walker and The Glenallchie Distillers Co. took over in mid-2017. Previous to this no peated whisky had ever been distilled there. The range has four editions in the 2023 batch, each aged five years.

These are The Original (matured in ex-bourbon, ex-rye and American virgin oak casks), The Sherry One (aged in American oak, followed by ex-Pedro Ximenez and ex-Oloroso sherry puncheons), The Chinquapin One (initial maturation in American oak, before Chinquapin virgin oak barrels), and The Turbo 2023 Edition (a small-batch annual release capturing ‘the heart of the heart’: the spirit cut with the highest phenol content - it was aged in American virgin oak and sherry casks).

Our Tasting Notes


Meikle Tòir The Original
 
The colour is golden yellow and the nose is sooty and ashy with some underlying sweetness. Aromas of charcoal embers, surgical bandage and manuka honey dominate. They are supported by plenty of green apple, toffee and white chocolate, plus a pinch of white pepper.

On the palate this whisky is surprisingly soft and fudge-like for 50% ABV. The fudge and toffee-like notes, plus the manuka honey from the nose give a nice level of sweetness, but it is the more savoury characteristics that are in control. Damp and vegetal notes, such as moss and cut grass, evolve to become more medicinal and bonfire-like. It becomes especially sooty and slightly dirty towards the finish. White chocolate and cocoa powder also come through, as does some caramelised apple. There are also hints of cinnamon, earthy ginger root and clove - this particularly increases with time.
 


Meikle Tòir The Sherry One
 
The colour is coppery amber and the nose is lovely. Sweet aromas of caramel, milk chocolate and dried fruits mix with more savoury ones of charred oak, toasted hazelnuts and sooty peat smoke. Hints of barbequed apple, honeycomb and coffee grounds sit in the background.

On the palate this whisky is rich, bold and savoury. Heavy notes of caramel, dried fruit (especially raisin and sultana) and bonfire embers or ash hit first. They are supported by stewed apple with plenty of clove and cinnamon bark. More savoury notes come in the form of cigar tobacco leaf, damp moss and dried heather. The smoke gives a gripping dryness that dominates. Slowly more sweet characteristics begin to redress the balance - think of honeycomb, butterscotch, prunes and a hint of treacle tart. The combination of these with the ashy and sooty smoke is very good. The finish is long and smoky.
 


Meikle Tòir The Chinquapin One 
The colour is deep gold and the nose is earthy, smoky and spicy. Aromas of honeycomb, golden syrup and toffee mingle with those of sweet peat smoke, gingerbread and vanilla fudge. Underneath sit smouldering, earthy spices - think of liquorice root, ginseng and cinnamon bark.

On the palate this whisky feels sweet, robust and spicy. A distinct peppery note kicks things off but very quickly the honeycomb and golden syrup characteristics from the nose come through well. Then comes some further notes of milk chocolate and toasted nuts, especially hazelnut and walnut. The savoury notes are never far away though. The sweet peat from the nose now has a sooty, ashy edge along with a pinch of white pepper and cinnamon powder. There are also hints of heather honey, clove and liquorice root. A late damp earthy note rounds everything off and give a dry, peppery finish.



Meikle Tòir The Turbo
The colour is gold with a tint of amber and the nose is rich and powerful. Aromas of caramel, heather honey and milk chocolate are upfront but it is not long before the savoury peat smoke begins to dominate. This has a burnt and charcoal ash-like feel to it and wisps its way around the other aromas.

On the palate this whisky has plenty of spice and acrid smoke to the fore. The sweetness is there and sits in the background - think of coconut fondant, vanilla cream, milk chocolate and runny honey. However, it is the peat smoke that dominates. It is ashy and earthy with a drying and medicinal edge. Some other savoury notes come through well and include damp leather, toasted spices and bitter orange peel. The peppery spice begins to build towards the end and adds further dryness as the sweetness fades away.

Glenallachie
 

The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has revealed the second trio of bottlings in its limited edition Wine Cask Series. For each bottling the rare oak casks used have been sourced and selected by Billy Walker, the Master Distiller of Glenallachie, and feature three fine wine producers from France, Italy and Portugal. Initial maturation was in American oak ex-bourbon barrels in each case, before a finishing period in the red wine casks.

The Glenallachie 11 years old Premier Cru Classé Cask Finish has influence from French oak barrels previously used to age Bordeaux red wine. The Glenallachie 10 years old Grattamacco Cask Finish features ex-Super Tuscan wine barriques sourced from a prestigious organic winery in Italy. The Glenallachie 9 years old Douro Valley Cask Finish sees the whisky part-matured in barriques from one of Portugal's most esteemed wine making regions. There are just 10,800, 15,600 and 12,000 bottles available respectively.

The three bottlings in the Glenallachie Wine Cask Series Batch 2 will be available globally through specialist whisky retailers. All are bottled at 48% ABV and are non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Glenallachie 9 years old Douro Valley Cask Finish will cost £57, Glenallachie 10 years old Grattamacco Cask Finish £58 and Glenallachie 11 years old Premier Cru Classé Cask Finish.


 

Mossburn
The independent distillers and bottlers of Mossburn have announced the launch of a new series of whiskies, and the inaugural whisky in that series. The Mossburn Cask Collaboration Series kicks off with the limited edition Mossburn Speyside 12 years old Foursquare Rum Cask Finish sees Mossburn's blended Speyside malt matured in ex-bourbon casks, before a finishing period in ex-rum casks from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados. Forthcoming releases in the series will see similar casks from around the world used to finish their blended malts, and these are expected annually. 
 
The Mossburn Speyside 12 years old Foursquare Rum Cask Finish bottling is released at the natural cask strength of 57.7% ABV. There are just 10,000 bottles and these will be available globally via specialist whisky retailers. A bottle will cost £65/ $US80.


Port Askaig
 

The Islay single malt brand of Port Askaig, which is owned by Elixir Distillers, has announced a total revamp of its core range. The trio of new whiskies come with the new tagline of The Gateway to Islay. The range kicks off with Port Askaig 8 years old (pictured, above centre), which features an intricate marriage of cask types. Initial maturation is in ex-bourbon casks with an extended five year finish in a selection of ex-bourbon and toasted American oak barrels, plus ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry butts and re-fill hogsheads. A bottle will cost £50.

Two other limited edition batched whiskies will join the 8 years old - Port Askaig Cask Strength (pictured, above left) and Port Askaig 17 years old (pictured, above right). The Cask Strength will evolve with each batch with Batch #01-2023 aged in first-fill toasted ex-bourbon barrels and re-fill American oak hogsheads. Each batch will never be made from more than 60 casks. It is bottled at 59.4% ABV and will cost £65.

The 17 years old rounds off the range and is planned to be an annual release. Each batch will consist of just 9,000 bottles. The first batch has been matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and bottled at the natural strength of 51.8% ABV. Each bottle will cost £125. All three expressions are both non chill-filtered and of natural colour, and will be available globally from late-October.

Cù Bòcan
The peated Highland whisky brand of Cù Bòcan has released the second batch of its award-winning 15 years old single malt. The Cù Bòcan 15 years old 2023 Edition has been fully matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks for the full term and also marks the 10th anniversary since the brand was launched. The bottling features some of the first Cù Bòcan spirit to be distilled, with production only beginning at the Tomatin distillery near Inverness in 2005. There are just 6,000 bottles available worldwide. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Cù Bòcan 15 years old 2023 Edition will cost £97.

 
Glasgow
 

The Glasgow Distillery Co. has added three new expressions to its experimental Small Batch Series - the Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled Cognac Cask Finish, Peated Tokaji Cask Finish and Golden Beer Cask Finish. The Cognac Cask Finish is a marriage of three casks that initially began in ex-bourbon barrels before a lengthy secondary maturation in ex-Cognac casks from France. There are just 1,576 bottles and these are released at 52% ABV. A bottle will cost £59. 
 
The Peated Tokaji Cask Finish is constructed of just two casks that were originally matured in virgin American oak barrels before a finishing period in ex-Tokaji wine hogsheads from Hungary. There are just 615 bottles in the batch and these are released at 53.4% ABV. A bottle will cost £59. 
 
The Golden Beer Cask Finish is just one single cask. Initial maturation was in an ex-bourbon cask before it was transferred to an ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry cask that had previously held Innis & Gunn golden beer. There are just 340 bottles and they are released at 58% ABV. A bottle will cost £64. All three bottlings are non chill-filtered and of natural colour.



Glenallachie
The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced the fourth batch of its award-winning 21 years old single malt. The Glenallachie 21 years old Cask Strength Batch 4 consists of just three Spanish oak ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks that were hand selected for the bottling by Billy Walker, the Master Blender for Glenallachie. The release consists of just 2,000 bottles that will be available in selected markets worldwide. It is bottled at the natural cask strength of 51.1% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. A bottle will cost £306.



The English
The English Distillery, which is based in Norfolk in the east of England, has announced the first ever 100% sherry cask bottling into its core range. The English Sherry Cask features the distillery's unpeated spirit that has matured in ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and is bottled at 46% ABV. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour, and joins The English Original and The English Smoky in the range. The English Sherry Cask is available now from the distillery shop and website, plus via selected specialist retailers. Bottles will cost £60 each.
