Old Forester 2024 Birthday Bourbon Review

On the nose, there is every classic Old Forester aroma: a little acetone and banana, citrus peel and deeply charred oak. Juicy Fruit Gum is all over this, as are surprises like a chocolate-coated cream-filled donut, candy bar (nougat and milk chocolate), nutmeg and cocoa powder.

STEVE'S NOTES

SHARE WITH: Serious bourbon fans who will appreciate this big, complex and well-aged whiskey.

WORTH THE PRICE: Yep. It's rare-splurge-worthy.

BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: Bottle if you can find it. Bar if you can't.

OVERALL: Birthday releases have been hit or miss, but I'm always excited to try the next iteration and hope for a hit. This is precisely that: a full-on wallop of aromas, flavors, character, texture and undeniable Old Fo' DNA.

This is a complete wow on the palate: big, dark, brooding, coating and warm. The first sip seemed a little hot for 107 proof, but every sip afterward was warming, weighty, cozy and satisfying. I rarely consider situations in which a whiskey "puts" me for optimal sipping, but this goes straight to a roaring campfire on a cold night. That said, I'm happily enjoying it in September in the boring confines of my air-conditioned office. This bourbon is the (pricey) gift that keeps giving ... tobacco, mincemeat, dried cherry, bitter chocolate, chocolate brownie and a touch of molasses. I could go on but won't, and I'm sure dear readers, you are pleased.

Bottom line: Get this if you can find it and justify the pirate's price. It's not only one of my favorite American whiskies for 2024, but it may well be my favorite Birthday Bourbon.

A day of leisure and decadence and gambling and perhaps trackside raucous. Powered by Bourbon…In short, a GOOD TIME. The ultimate good time.

But it’s more than that. It’s essentially America’s first celebrated annual tailgate event. Take that college football and NFL. The Kentucky Derby is officially the longest, continually held sporting event in America. It’s globally iconic. It’s America’s original SUPER BOWL of sporting events. An excuse for us all to get together, get gussied up, enjoy food together, imbibe together (Kentucky Bourbon cough cough). There’s nothing more symbolic of Kentucky than its prized dynamic duo – BOURBON & THE KENTUCKY DERBY.

Melissa Rift to have a say in Old Forester Birthday in 2024

Like a child celebrating its own birthday, Old Forester Birthday’s proof and age jump around a lot. The 2019 release was 11 years old with a proof of 105 (it remains one of my favorites, plus, I got to taste its brutish dump strength of 150 proof), while 2020’s age dropped to 10 years and 98 proof.

Melissa Rift to have a say in Old Forester Birthday in 2024

If you’ve tasted Old Forester's 2023 Birthday Bourbon, don’t credit Melissa Rift for its particulars. As the brand’s master taster for only about a year, this is her first time observing the creation of the annual September release. This year she’s a student listening closely to input from Brown-Forman master distiller Chris Morris and the veteran R&D team managing the project.

Hopefully she took good notes, because come November, work begins anew on the 2024 Birthday release, and Rift’s stamp will be on it.

“This year was a great learning process,” Rift said of “Birthday,” the commonly used nickname. The annual release celebrates the Sept. 2 birthday of Old Forester founder, George Garvin Brown. “I listened a lot to soak up as much information as possible on past releases and their thought processes. Going into next year, I’ll get to be more involved.”

Her previous work as single barrel program manager at Bulleit Bourbon in Shelbyville, Ky., ensured her familiarity with good, old barrels. Many single barrel pickers (I among them) visiting over the past few years will tell you Rift got some excellent casks (two I enjoyed that were super shorties yielding just 48 and 69 bottles) into those lineups. Better yet, all were bourbon from mashbills born of old Seagram recipes—varying only slightly from Four Roses recipes—which added to their cool factor.

Barrels chosen for Old Forester’s Birthday release are picked more specifically, as in from one day’s production. This year’s batch came from 103 barrels filled on May 5, 2011, and from the fifth floor of Warehouse I on the campus of Brown-Forman Distillery in Shively, Ky.

The 2021 iteration was 12 years old and bottled at 104 proof, while last year’s release was 11 years old and proof to just 96. Proof for this year remained the same while age rose to 12. Why the randomness? The brand selects each year’s bottling based on taste. What a concept!

This price on this year’s release, the 23rd in the series, is a wallet-sapping $169.99, a full $130 higher than when it was introduced in 2000. Morris told me several years ago that, “We couldn’t give it away back then at that price.” If I recall correctly, Morris said that in 2015, the same year I bought a bottle of Birthday at retail for $80.

Back to the whiskey. Just like proofs and ages, my preference for each release of Birthday changes annually, and unfortunately this one (a 50ml sample from OF) isn’t a favorite. The nose leads with rye, acetone and tree fruit, which I dig in Old Fo’ … when those accents carry over to the palate. Fruit is subtle and rye is muted, though corn sweetness does coat the palate favorably. Some leather and cinnamon appear in the aftertaste, but the finish is lean. Little else is happening here. I’d hoped for more depth and complexity from a whiskey this old.

For what it’s worth, I’m a stalwart fan of Old Forester’s 100 proof Signature, one of the best bourbon bargains ever. So, given that’s my baseline for every bourbon released by the brand, I don’t think I’m asking too much of a bourbon that’s 7 years older and costs seven times more than Signature.

The good news in all this was this summer’s newest Old Forester 117 Series release, a bottled-in-bond. The whiskey was barreled in 2014, though Old Forester’s press release was vague about when it was bottled or, perhaps, even tanked. Rift called it 9 years old, so we’ll go with that.

There’s a lot of traditional Ol’ Fo’ goodness going on here: cooked stone fruit, dark honey, bright citrus notes and balanced oak—nothing drying at all; terrific mouthfeel. This drinks and finishes with tons of spice and a great cinnamon tingle. (Rift said, “The 117 has stewed blackberries, candied and caramelized notes … with that age on it, it’s beautiful.” The brand’s press release twice cited whipped cream as a flavor note, but it definitely eluded me.) I like this whiskey a great deal, and the price isn’t horrible at $59.99—albeit for a 375ml bottle.

I know this short post was scant on info about Melissa Rift, but you can expect she’ll make her more headlines as her work on the brand emerges and more releases influenced by her come out. Needless to say, I look forward to those.

For those lucky enough to do an Old Forester barrel pick with Rift, expect she’s a cool and knowledgeable customer who listens to what groups say rather than telling them what they should be thinking and tasting. I liked her style at Bulleit, and I’m glad she’s carried that over to Old Forester.

My Take

Birthday Bourbon is some of the most sought after bourbon available. I love that they're making it a sweepstakes instead of selling to the people who camp out for days to buy a bottle that they can resell for 3x what they paid. If you can make it to the distillery to pick it up if you win, this is a no-brainer to enter.

Master Taster Jackie Zykan

After seven years of playing a key leadership role in the renaissance of Old Forester, Master Taster Jackie Zykan announced today she is stepping away to pursue other career opportunities.

Her last day with Old Forester and Brown-Forman is July 1.

“In the summer of 2015, I joined Brown-Forman to be a part of the reinvigoration of what continues to be one of the best-kept secrets in the bourbon world,” Zykan said. “I have been honored to be part of a team that has revived the legacy of Old Forester, and I look forward to witnessing the next chapters of Old Forester from afar. I am excited for my personal and professional journey ahead.”

During her tenure, Zykan helped return Old Forester to prominence in the spirits industry and among consumers. She helped lead the brand’s innovation and premiumization strategy, culminating as the first woman in Old Forester history to have her name on the bottle as part of the 117 Distillery Series that debuted in 2021.

“Jackie Zykan’s leadership helped grow this storied, historic brand to become, once again, a beloved bourbon among consumers and bartenders,” said Mark Bacon, senior vice president and managing director of Super Premium American Whiskey at Brown-Forman. “We wish her great success in her next venture.”

Instead of focusing on bringing a wider variety of liquor products to Ohio or working through supply issues (half the stores I go to seem to be out of widely available products, such as Woodford)... the State has announced yet another lottery. This one is for premium bourbons starting at $149.98 + tax per bottle all the way up to $2,499.98 plus tax.

The lottery will run from 12:01 a.m. on November 8th and end at 11:59 p.m. on November 15th. The available products are:
  • OFC Bourbon 1993 ($2,499.98 plus tax) - Cherry cordial on the nose followed by caramel and slightly smoked-oak. Dark chocolate, tobacco leaves and dates are found on the palate, followed by a lingering finish of leather, black pepper and cinnamon.
  • Double Eagle Very Rare ($2,000 plus tax) - Hints of vanilla, toasted oak and caramel lead to a gracefully-aged oaky flavor.
  • Michter's 25 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon ($1,000 plus tax) - Molasses, holiday spice, chocolate, smoke roasted notes, dried fruit, melted butter and vanilla providing the highlights.
  • King of Kentucky ($249.98 plus tax) - Nose: Deep notes of dried fig, dark caramel, and vanilla bean with a light chocolate sweetness all sharpened with a hint of caramelized orange and lemon peels and a pinch of cinnamon. Palate: Dark caramel and dried fruit coat a layer of dark baking spices and toasted coconut notes brightened with crisp notes of citrus.
  • Old Forester Birthday ($149.98 plus tax) - Nose: Butterscotch and toffee dominate, supported by layers of sweet melon and corn bread. Palate: Rich oak spice and blackcurrant instantly warm coupled with light maple, caramel cake and white floral notes.
In order to enter, you'll need to provide the following:
  • Ohio Driver’s License Number / Ohio Identification Card Number
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Street Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Email Address
  • Preferred OHLQ store location for purchasing the product if you win

All entries must be submitted online at the OHLQ lottery website and must be purchased at the Ohio Liquor location designated during submission. Entry is free.

My Take

Yet another lottery with bottles the average person doesn't care about. The only bottle I would buy is the Old Forester Birthday so that'll be my only entry. As for the other, the only reason I could see to buy any of the $1000+ bottles is to resell (which is illegal in Ohio). A quick search shows the Michter's being sold online for $7999

In a separate note, I'm starting to have concerns on the validity of these lotteries. The State has so far refused to release any details on the October lottery and there have been some near mathematical impossibilities of multiple people winning twice in the same lottery... Combine that with the rumored leaks coming out of OHLQ of when and where bottles will be released to... it certainly raises some eyebrows.

Top 5 Most Overrated Bourbons – Now that Bourbon Heritage Month is in the rearview mirror, the fall release season will be picking up steam and we are sure to see email announcements, raffles, charity auctions, and lawn chair tater lines wrapped around liquor stores across this great land. There is nothing worse than showing up late for a bourbon drop or catching a late number lottery ticket and being offered an overrated (and usually overpriced) alternative to that bottle you woke up early to snag. This year we are not just calling out the Emperors with no clothes, we are naming names of excellent alternatives that will satiate your palate for fine bourbon and preserve a pretty penny. These alts should be readily available in most markets.
