Pioneering the revival of artisanal distillation in Purcellville, Virginia, Catoctin Creek Distilling Co., The Virginia Rye Whisky ℠, is set to mark its impressive 15-year journey on February 14, 2024. Founded in 2009 by the husband and wife team, Scott and Becky Harris, who continue to lead as owner/operators of the independently-owned and most awarded distillery in Virginia.

To commemorate this milestone, Catoctin Creek Distilling Co. proudly unveils its most mature release to date – the six-year-old Rabble Rouser Bottled-in-Bond Rye Whisky.

Distilled exclusively from 100% rye during the fall season of 2017 and bottled in bond, this expression of Rabble is blended from the first set of 53-gallon charred, new oak barrels used by the company for maturing their signature rye whisky.

Becky was previously limited to 30-gallon barrels since her 1993 Ford Ranger was the main Barrel Transport Vehicle (BTV). Her team was unloading and moving all these barrels by hand at the horse barn which was the warehouse until 2017.

The first plan Becky made upon getting a warehouse with a concrete floor and a forklift was to start transitioning the Bottled-in-Bond product to larger format barrels, which also improved losses from the “angel’s share.”

“I am incredibly excited to share this year’s product with everyone and to celebrate this milestone in the business,” said Becky Harris, co-founder, chief distiller and president of the distillery.

Reflecting on the journey, Scott Harris, Becky’s husband and co-founder and general manager, remarked, “It has been an incredible fifteen years. In some ways, it feels like we just started yesterday. Just like our kids, this baby of ours is now all grown up!  When we started, we just wanted to sell some whisky to Virginia ABC, and today, we can be found all over the world.  It’s just amazing!”

PRICING & AVAILABILITY: The Rabble Rouser release is scheduled to hit the market on February 14, 2024, at 8:00 am, available both through online channels and Catoctin Creek’s extensive network of national distributors. With only a limited quantity of a few thousand bottles released this year, the Bottled-In-Bond expression boasts a robust 100 proof and is offered in 750 mL bottles at $99.99 each.

Actor Sam Heughan is best known for his starring role on TV’s “Outlander,” but he’s a whisky lover, too. Sam started his own whisky brand, The Sassenach, and he’ll join us on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth to talk about his love for whisky. We’ll also hear from the new master distiller at Angel’s Envy, Owen Martin. He’s just unveiled this year’s Angel’s Envy Cask Strength releases, a Bourbon, and for the first time, a Rye. In the news, Pernod Ricard is planning a new distillery on Islay, while Compass Box wants to build one in the Highlands.

Frey Ranch “Farm Strength” Bourbon Highlights Week’s New Releases

Colby and Ashley Frey grow all of the grains for the whiskies on their farm in Fallon, Nevada, and their latest release is the Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon. This one is bottled at 61.25% ABV, and is available at retailers in California and Nevada along with the Frey Ranch web site with a suggested retail price of $79.99 a bottle. Our tasting notes are available here.

Other new whiskies unveiled this week:

The Glenrothes has a new 25-year-old edition. Whisky Maker Laura Rampling selected first-fill sherry-seasoned American and European Oak casks, along with with a small percentage of refill and ex-Bourbon casks to make this whisky. There’s no word on pricing.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in England has released the latest batch of their Filey Bay Peated Finish single malt. It’s matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in ex-peated whisky casks, and is available through the distillery’s web site and select retailers in the U-K for £65 a bottle.

Whisky and music go together, and that’s the case with a new project from whisky writer and musician Felipe Schrieberg and musician Paul Archibald. They play together as The Rhythm and Booze Project, and have created a whisky label as well as a record label. The first release from Rhythm and Booze records is a 13-year-old blended malt matured in a Sherry butt, and has a QR code on the back to allow consumers to download and stream the companion playlist to listen to while they enjoy a dram.

On that note…pun intended, Catoctin Creek Distilling is getting ready to release the latest edition of its Ragnarok Rye in conjunction with the heavy metal band GWAR. It’s a special bottling marking the tenth anniversary of the death of the band’s original frontman, Oderus Urungus, and is finished in rum casks.

It’ll be available at the Virginia distillery starting August first…
