This whisky is the latest addition to the core range of innovative peated Highland single malt Cù Bòcan (pronounced koo-bock-an). The Cù Bòcan 12 years old features spirit that is matured for a short period each winter at the Tomatin distillery near Inverness. The new bottling features part-maturation in ex-rum casks sourced from the Caribbean. These have come from Barbados and Guyana in particular. Prior to that, maturation was in ex-bourbon barrels. The whisky is released at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour, It will be produced in small batches annually. The Cù Bòcan 12 years old will be available in selected specialist whisky retailers worldwide and will cost £65/ $US80.

Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands, about half way between Aviemore and Inverness. It was founded in 1897 by a group of Inverness businessmen and was originally named Tomatin Spey. It then became Tomatin, the name of the local village, in 1907. Tomatin is currently owned by the Takara Shuzo Corporation, who purchased the distillery in 1986 after the previous ownership had been liquidated. It has a current annual capacity of five million litres.

Our tasting notes

The colour is pale lemon yellow and the nose is highly fragrant, sweet and confected. Aromas of brown sugar, white chocolate and soft nougat rise from the glass and are supported by delightful hints of caramelised tropical fruit - think of pineapple and peach especially. Underneath are further hints of gingerbread, vanilla fudge and a gentle whiff of sweet peat smoke.

On the palate this whisky is immediate more smoky than the nose suggests. This has a leafy and ash-like edge, which creates a drying quality. The peat is sweet but on the vegetal side - think of damp moss and dried heather in particular. The level is good as it does not dominate, but sits well amongst the other characteristics.

The distinct confected sweetness remains in evidence. White chocolate and nougat are again to the fore, as are notes of toasted marshmallow and tarte tatin. Vanilla, sweet gingerbread and a hint of honey add to this. Ripe and caramelised tropical fruits are also never far away - imagine barbequed pineapple, plus juicy mango and peach. The mix is lovely.

The finish is of decent length, which is increased by the smoky aspect of the whisky. The confected notes begin to fade, as do the the tropical fruit elements. This leaves the drying smoke and a pinch of peppery spice to dry things out and drag out the finish. A little heat comes through right at the end.

What's the verdict?

This latest expression of Cù Bòcan is another lovely addition to the ever-expanding range of the Highland peated malt. It has become known for its experimentation in its numerous limited editions and it is good to see this spreading to the core range. The use of ex-rum casks from the Caribbean here has lifted the whisky and provided it with plenty of sweetness and vibrancy. This 12 years old is delicious, reasonably priced and easy to recommend.

Billy Leighton.

________

Cù Bòcan
The lightly peated Highland single malt brand of Cù Bòcan has announced the fifth bottling in its limited edition Creation Series. The Cù Bòcan Creation #5 is believed to be the first ever Scotch single malt to be matured or part-matured in Colombian Andean oak. The innovative brand has used the Creations Series to explore different avenues of maturation.

The Andean oak sourced for the special casks grew at between 3,500 and 4,000 metres (11,480 to 13,120 feet) above sea level in the Andes mountains of South America. The whisky used was distilled in December 2011 and filled to re-fill American oak ex-bourbon hogsheads. After almost 10 years it was transferred to the Andean oak casks for a final finishing period of just over one year.

Cù Bòcan Creation #5 is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are just 8,400 bottles in the batch and they will be available through specialist whisky retailers worldwide. A bottle will cost £60/ $US75.

Fettercairn
The Highland distillery of Fettercairn has announced the fifth and final release in its cult Warehouse Collection - the Fettercairn Warehouse 14. The new whisky has again been created by Gregg Glass, the award-winning Whisky Maker for Fettercairn, who started with a pocket of first-fill and re-fill ex-bourbon casks. These were then transferred to three different ex-beer barrels that has formerly held pale ale, dark ale and stout. It is the first time that whiskies from the exposed Warehouse 14 have featured in the series.

Fettercairn Warehouse 14 is bottled at 51.2% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will be available via specialist whisky retailers in selected world markets including Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands and the UK. A bottle will cost £70.

Glenfiddich

The multi-award winning Speyside single malt distillery of Glenfiddich has launched the latest bottling in its renowned Grand Series - the Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura 29 years old. It is the first ever Scotch whisky to be part-matured or finished in ex-Awamori casks from Japan. Awamori is a spirit made using long grain indica rice and traditionally stored in clay pots. The method is said to remain unaltered for over 500 years. In the Okinawa region of southern Japan a small proportion of Awamori is then aged in oak barrels, which makes the casks extremely rare.

The whisky has been released to coincide with Hamami - the annual Japanese cherry blossom festival. The packaging features intricate illustrations by June, a Japanese artist who creates visions incorporating Japanese culture and landscape.

The Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura 29 years old is bottled at 45.1% ABV and is initially available in the UK at Harrods and other selected specialist and luxury retailers. A bottle will cost £1,500.

"We are always looking to experiment with new finishes so when the chance arose to acquire rare ex-Awamori casks we saw an opportunity to push the boundaries and experiment with this highly unusual spirit. We always learn something new when we lead with innovation so taking a risk is worth it."
Brian Kinsman / Malt Master at Glenfiddich.

Here is the round-up of the news from this last week ...

________

Ardbeg
The cult Islay distillery of Ardbeg have revealed details of their latest Ardbeg Committee exclusive limited edition - Ardbeg Fermutation. The new whisky is the result of an accident at the distillery in 2008. The boiler broke down and threatened the contents of six washbacks of fermenting wash. With the wash unable to be collected at its normal fermentation time of 72 hours, it was left to continue fermenting until the boiler was fixed. This resulted in the wash being in the washbacks for three weeks -  the longest in Ardbeg history and an unprecedented length of time for wash.

The unplanned experiment was overseen by Dr. Bill Lumsden, the Director of Distilling & Whisky Creation at Ardbeg. The spirit was then matured in first-fill and re-fill ex-bourbon casks, and has been bottled at 13 years old and 49.4% ABV. Ardbeg Fermutation will be available to Ardbeg Committee members from February 1. A bottle will cost £150.

"I have always wanted to experiment with longer fermentations, so an unintentional boiler breakdown was the best thing that could have happened! Three weeks was unchartered territory for us. The outcome is a dram that tastes like pure science fiction!"
Dr. Bill Lumsden.

Cù Bòcan
The Highland peated whisky brand of Cù Bòcan, which is distilled every winter at the Tomatin distillery near Inverness, has released two new limited edition expressions into their Cù Bòcan Creation series. Creation #3 (pictured, left) sees the smoky spirit matured in a combination of ex-Cabernet Sauvignon barrels sourced from Morocco and ex-rye whiskey casks from America. Creation #4 features maturation in a combination of ex-Tawny Port barrels from Portugal and ex-Cognac casks from France. The series is designed to push the boundaries of flavour and experimentation in Scotch whisky.

The new whiskies join the Cù Bòcan Signature in the range until sold out. Both are bottled at 46% ABV and are both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. They will be available in specialist whisky retailers in selected world markets. Cù Bòcan Creation #3 will cost £45/ $60 US per bottle with Creation #4 at £60/ $80 US.

"We are looking forward to opening up the world of lightly peated whisky, whilst continuing to explore unusual and intriguing finishes in our Creation series. Each Cù Bòcan single malt offers an exploration in the subtleties of smoke, the character of the casks and the mastery of maturation."
Graham Nicolson / Sales Director at Tomatin.

Uncle Nearest

The Tennessee brand of Uncle Nearest has unveiled its 2022 line-up of whiskeys, which also includes three new expressions. The announcement was also used to reveal new packaging. All of the whiskeys have been distilled, matured and bottled at the brand's Nearest Green distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee. This is named after Nathan 'Nearest' Green, who was known as Uncle Nearest and is widely regarded as being the first African-American master distiller in the USA.

The new whiskeys in the range are Uncle Nearest Rye, Single Barrel Rye and Single Barrel Whiskey. It si the first time that the entire range features whiskey made at the Nearest Green distillery, which was founded by Fawn Weaver in 2017. The three new bottlings will initially be available at the distillery before seeing a wider distribution across the US. Prices were not revealed in the press release.

White Peak
The English craft distillery of White Peak has announced the release of its first ever single malt - Wire Works First Release. The name honours the location of the distillery in Ambergate, Derbyshire. This was built in the former buildings of the Johnson & Nephew Wire Works, a pioneering wire and cable manufacturer in Victorian times. The whisky has been matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon and STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) casks. There are just 5,016 bottles in this inaugural release and the whisky is bottled at 50.3% ABV. Other bottlings are planned throughout 2022.

Members of the distillery's Temperance Club, cask owners programme and investors have had the opportunity to reserve a bottle, before it goes on general sale on February 3. It will be available from the distillery shop, plus a selection of independent and specialist retailers in the UK. A bottle will cost £65.
