POPS' NOTES

SHARE WITH: People think that good whiskey requires spending over $100 for limited-release expressions. It's a fantastic bottle to reset their expectations, but it may also make them cry once they recognize their past mistakes.

WORTH THE PRICE: AT $34.99, do you need to ask?

BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: Bottle – Buy a few and share with friends.

OVERALL: After eagerly anticipating Green River's new rye whiskey for over a year, I can confidently say it was worth the wait. The nose is a delightful surprise, offering a blend of orange citrus, young rye grain, and peaches. This sweet and fruity aroma sets it apart from the typical pepper-forward nose of other 95/5 rye mash bills and evolves beautifully into notes of honey-glazed pastries.

The whiskey's taste begins with a robust caramel flavor, an unusual characteristic of rye whiskey. It's joined by the expected spicy (albeit young) rye grain and a dash of pepper. What's truly intriguing, though, is the addition of a sugary bubblegum note – think of the classic pink bubblegum – mingled with a slightly bitter fruitiness, reminiscent of the skin of a Red Delicious apple. This unique combination of flavors creates a delicious and unexpected experience.

The finish is long, dry, and satisfying, featuring plenty of cinnamon and pepper and a lingering sweet bubblegum note. Green River Rye offers a different flavor journey compared to its peers. Its sweeter profile and milder peppery taste make it more accessible, potentially appealing to a broader audience, including those who might find other rye whiskeys too intense. At 95 proof, it strikes a good balance between drinkability and flavor intensity, though some rye enthusiasts might prefer a higher proof for added complexity.

In just a week since receiving my bottle, I've almost finished it, which speaks volumes about its appeal. It reminds me of the excitement I felt with Green River's high-rye bourbon release back in early 2022. Green River is certainly making a mark with its releases this year, and this rye is a must-try for those looking for quality without the need for celebrity endorsements or steep prices.

In summary, Green River Rye is a well-crafted, flavorful whiskey that offers great value. It's a 'whiskey with no regrets,' perfect for enjoying with friends at your next gathering.

Green River Distilling Co. (Owensboro, KY), one of Bourbon Country’s oldest distilleries, is soon releasing its inaugural FULL PROOF SINGLE BARREL “Head Distiller’s Pick #1”. We’re kinda stoked about it, given the brands extremely successful flagship and wheated Bourbon launches. For retail/bar hunting sake, Green River can now be found in 25 states.

Of note, Full Proof is a bit different vs Barrel and Cask Strength. Full Proof, while still in the higher range of booze concentration, has water added to the barrel before bottling to offset and replace the volume lost during aging (angel’s share). Versus Cask Strength (same as Barrel Strength), barrel content is transferred directly to bottling after aging is complete.

The line for purchase will start at 11 a.m. and tickets for purchase will be handed out at Noon CDT. Master Distiller Aaron Harris will sign bottles for guests from 1 – 3 p.m.

Originally founded in 1885, Green River (DSP-KY-10) is the 10th oldest distillery in Kentucky. Fire and prohibition relegated the brand to history. It was reestablished in 2022. “Green River Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon leads with a beautiful peach and caramel aroma coupled with apricot and cinnamon. Bursting with flavor, on the palate you’ll find toffee, pastry and hazelnut that guide toward a honeyed finish that’s smooth and balanced,” said Dan Callaway, VP of New Product Development. “In contrast with Green River Bourbon, which brings a hearty backbone of rye spice, the wheated expression lends itself to easy drinking while holding its own distinct character. Green River Distillery Master Distiller Jacob Call

(Owensboro, KY) To say it’s been a big and busy year at Green River Distillery is putting it lightly.

They launched their first Bourbon under the Green River Label earlier this year (READ MORE).

Green River Distilling Bourbon

In late June, they were acquired by the Chicago based venture capitalist group Pritzer Private Capital, the same outfit that recently acquired Bardstown Bourbon Co.

This week, Green River’s Master Distiller, Jacob Call, announced he is departing the company at the end of July of which he had a heavy hand in building. Following an acquisition, its not uncommon to see personnel changes happen.

Green River has a long and extensive history going back over years in Owensboro with a “DSP-10” designation, meaning the 10th registered distillery in Kentucky. For context, there are now well over 20,000+ DSP numbers. In the late 1800’s – early 1900’s, it was one of the top Bourbon brands in the country. After laying dormant for decades prior, the ancient distillery started its comeback in 2014 and once again began producing Bourbon, this time under the South Carolina based Terressentia Inc. In 2022, they re-launched under Green River Distillery.

Jacob has been the Master Distiller since day 1 of the initial 2014 launch.

What’s Next?

Per the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, Jacob will remain in the Bourbon Industry but is not a liberty to announce his next move as he is under a non-compete that expires October 31st. Jacob noted the decision “bittersweet” as Green River’s new CEO, Mark Erwin, expressed his enthusiasm to work with Jacob and the disappointment in Call’s departure from GRD.

Call notes in the article that he is not leaving Owensboro and interestingly enough, in May, a new Owensboro based company “The Kentucky Whiskey Co, LLC” filed for economic incentives with the state of Kentucky on the basis of its distillery being built in nearby Ohio County.

Could there be a connection between Call and the new alleged distillery? We’ll just have to wait and see, but best regards to Jacob wherever his next chapter lies.

Green River Distillery

This is interesting.

Bardstown Bourbon Company (BBCo) has announced their plans to buy Green River Distillery (Formerly O.Z. Tyler) in Owensboro, KY.

BBCo, est 2014, leaped directly out of the gates with a business plan for contract distilling, meaning they will work with you and make your whiskey to the mashbill and specs of your choosing. In a culinary sense, think of it as using their kitchen, ingredients, and expertise to make the meal you want. They also have a growing vastness of barrel rickhouses on their property to store whiskey.

Bardstown Bourbon Company.

Green River Distillery launched their inaugural Bourbon just this year, to a fantastic response from the Bourbon community. The distillery grounds go back well over 100 years. Led by Master Distiller, Jacob Call (8th Gen KY distiller), GRD also has made a name for itself in the contract distilling and non-producing distillery (NPD) world.

The transaction will bring together two leading Kentucky bourbon producers into a strong, independent spirits company with a commitment to Kentucky whiskey.

Distilling more than seven million proof gallons annually, Bardstown Bourbon Company is one of the top 10 distilled spirits producers in the country. As a complement to its innovative contract distilling capabilities, Bardstown Bourbon Company has steadily built its own brand through its award-winning Discovery, Fusion and Collaborative Series. Green River Spirits Company will add the Green River brand as well as two production sites, positioning the combined business for continued growth in both Kentucky whiskey and custom distillation. Bringing together the historic legacy of Green River and the modern bourbon experience at Bardstown Bourbon Company provides an enticing and distinguished selection of Kentucky whiskey for bourbon drinkers and visitors.

“We’re excited to forge this new partnership, which brings together two world-class teams and expands the breadth of our portfolio and the number of customers served,” said Mark Erwin, CEO of Bardstown Bourbon Company. “Bardstown Bourbon Company was founded to honor the traditions and history of Kentucky bourbon while taking a wholly modern approach. The addition of one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky allows us to offer a comprehensive assortment that showcases the state’s flagship industry.”

The acquisition includes the historic Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, Kentucky, which is the 10th oldest distillery in the state, and a state-of-the-art spirits production facility in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to its flagship Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Green River Spirits Company has a vibrant contract distillation business producing whiskey, rye, vodka, rum, gin, and flavored whiskey.

Bardstown Bourbon Company was founded by Peter Loftin in 2014 to offer custom distilling solutions to brands seeking scale or customization in the American whiskey market. Bardstown Bourbon Company’s branded whiskies are now available in 20 markets nationwide.

About Bardstown Bourbon Company

The Bardstown Bourbon Company is a new blend of bourbon maker that honors the traditional art of making whiskey while pushing the boundaries through innovation.
