We started Inbox several years ago as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. The independent bottler of Gordon & Macphail has launched the fourth whisky in its Mr. George Legacy series. The series honours George Urqhart, a legendary figure in Gordon & Macphail's history and widely regarded as 'the father of Scotch single malt'. The bottling features a single first-fill ex-sherry butt that was filled at Glen Grant distillery in 1958, nurtured by G&M for 65 years and then bottled in November 2023. It is released at 56.5% ABV and will cost £7,500.

The Spirit of Yorkshire have announced their first special release of the year - the Filey Bay Porter Cask. The new limited edition features spirit distilled in 2018 and filled to ex-bourbon casks that had previously held Rip Curl porter from the brand's sister brewery, Top Wold. In turn, Rip Curl had been matured for 15 months in ex-Filey Bay casks. There are just 2,000 bottles. It is released at 50% ABV and will cost £80.

The Irish single pot still brand of Redbreast has released the fourth whiskey into its Iberian Series - the Redbreast Cuatro Bariles Edition. The new bottling will be exclusive to the travel retail sector. It features a combination of four distinct cask types - ex-bourbon, Spanish oak ex-sherry butts, ex-Tawny Port hogsheads and European virgin oak. It is bottled at 46% ABV and will cost €108.

The Islay farm distillery of Kilchoman have announced a new addition to their core range - the Kilchoman Batch Strength. It joins the Machir Bay and Sanaig expressions. The whisky has been matured in a combination of re-charred ex-red wine casks, ex-Oloroso sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels. It has been bottled at 57% ABV and will be available worldwide. A bottle will cost £65.

The Highland distillery of Dalmore has launched the second bottling of its prestigious Luminary Series. The Dalmore Luminary - The Rare 2024 Edition has seen Gregg Glass, Master Whisky Maker at Dalmore, and Richard Paterson OBE, Master Distiller at Dalmore, collaborate with Melodie Leung, Director at Zaha Hadid Architects. Leung created the extraordinary sculptural housing for the bottle.

The Rare comprises of a 49-year old whisky, matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks and finished in a blend of Port Colheita 1963, Apostoles sherry, ex-bourbon and a unique 1951/virgin oak hybrid cask. Just one bottle exists and will be auctioned by Sotherby's in May. All proceeds will go to the V&A Dundee.

Alongside The Rare bottling, another has been released for worldwide distribution. The Dalmore Luminary - The Collectible 2024 Edition features a small percentage of rare peated Dalmore spirit. The whisky is bottld at 16 years old and has been matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Apostoles sherry casks, plus ex-Tawny Port pipes. There are 20,000 bottles and each will retail for £275.

The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has released a trio of ex-sherry cask whiskies in its Wood Collection series. A second trio will be released later in 2024. The Glenallachie 'Sherry Series' Wood Collection features three single malts at nine years of age - the Fino Cask Finish, Amontillado Cask Finish and Oloroso Cask Finish. All are bottled at 48% ABV and are both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Each will cost £60.

The Danish whisky brand of Stauning has launched a new hybrid whisky featuring single malt and rye. Stauning HØST (pronounced 'hurst' and meaning 'harvest' in Danish) pays homage to the turning seasons and local cereals used to produce the whisky. The single malt and rye whiskies have been matured in ex-bourbon casks with a small percentage of ex-Port barrels. The new expression is bottled at 40.5% ABV and is expected to retail for £45.

Bruichladdich

The Islay distillery of Bruichladdich has announced the addition of two new rare whiskies to their core single malt range - the Bruichladdich 18 years old and Bruichladdich 30 years old. They are the first permanent whiskies of such age to sit in the range. They form part of a new premium sub-range named Luxury Redefined.

The Bruichladdich 18 years old (pictured, above left) features whisky made from the first crop of Islay barley distilled at Bruichladdich in 2004. The majority has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels with a small percentage of ex-Sauternes wine and ex-Port casks. All casks have been matured on Islay. It is released at 50% ABV and will cost £150 a bottle.

The Bruichladdich 30 years old (pictured, above right) features whiskies distilled in the early 1990s - a period of uncertainty for the distillery, which eventually closed for seven years in 1994. The whisky has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels and is released at 43% ABV. A bottle will cost £1,500. Both whiskies are available via www.bruichladdich.com and selected specialist whisky retailers worldwide.

Both whiskies also come in revolutionary new packaging which features a new bottle made from 60% recycled glass and a pioneering wraparound sleeve made from recycled paper pulp. This is moulded to the shape of the bottle and is plastic free and produced using 100% green energy.

Port Ellen

The legendary Islay distillery of Port Ellen, which will be reopened in March after a 41 year closure, has announced the release of two rare whiskies to celebrate the comeback. The set, know as Port Ellen Gemini, are the oldest ever whiskies to be released by Diageo, the distillery's owners. The pair of whiskies - Port Ellen Original and Port Ellen Remnant - are drawn from just three casks. Both are bottled at 44 years of age.

The three European oak casks were distilled and filled in 1978 and have been split between the two bottlings. They have yielded just 274 sets. The Port Ellen Original (pictured, above left) features whisky purely from these casks. It is bottled at 54.9% ABV. The Port Ellen Remnant (pictured, above right) has seen whisky from these casks placed in the Port Ellen remnant cask - a remnant cask is used at every distillery to measure excess spirit from a filling run - for a short period of time. It has been bottled at 53.6% ABV.

Port Ellen Gemini features two crystal decanters and these are presented in a unfolding mirrored case. The set will be available globally and will cost £45,000. Registration with Diageo's private client team is now open for those interested.

Spirit of Yorkshire

The field-to-bottle English craft distillery Spirit of Yorkshire has announced its first new bottling of 2024 - the Filey Bay STR Finish Batch #4. It is hoping to follow the success of the award-winning first three batches. The whisky underwent initial maturation in ex-bourbon barrels before a finishing period in STR ex-Rioja wine casks. STR stands for 'shaved, toasted and recharred', a technique that helps to rejuvenate casks.

The Filey Bay STR Finish Batch #4 is limited to just 3,000 bottles and is released at 46% ABV. It will be available at the distillery visitor centre, via www.spiritofyorkshire.com and in selected UK specialist retailers. A bottle will cost £65.

Review | Filey Bay IPA Finish Batch #2

Filey Bay IPA Finish Batch #2 is a small batch limited edition English single malt whisky from the Spirit of Yorkshire distillery. It has seen initial maturation in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in ex-beer barrels. These have previously help Scarborough Fair IPA from the Yorkshire brewery of Wold Top, which is has the same ownership as the distillery. In reverse, a special edition of the beer has been matured in the same casks once the whisky has been emptied.

The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery is the brainchild of Tom Mellor and David Thompson. It is in the village of Hunmanby, between the towns of Bridlington and Filey. It was the first single malt distillery to ever be registered in the county of Yorkshire and gives a true 'field to bottle' offering.

Production began in Spring 2016 and current production sits at just over 100,000 litres per year. All barley is grown on Mellor's nearby farm and then malted locally. The milling, mashing and fermentation take place at the Wold Top brewery, which is located a couple of miles from the distillery.

Filey Bay IPA Finish Batch #2 is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. It is available at the distillery shop. online via www.spiritofyorkshire.com and from selected specialist retailers in the UK. A bottle will cost £65.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is pale gold and the nose is fresh, vibrant and fruity. Aromas of crisp green apple and candied lemon peel rise from the glass initially, which are followed by further aromas of runny honey, vanilla sugar and a hint of nougat. Underneath sits a distinct grassiness, some icing sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.

On the palate this whisky feels uplifting and zesty. Tangy candied lemon peel and bitter lime notes mingle with a lovely underlying malty characteristic - this remains stable throughout and gives a good foundation for other notes to sit on. After the initial citrus hit comes some sugary sweetness - this is most reminiscent of icing sugar, marshmallow and a hint of cream soda.

Some honey and vanilla essence also sit in the background. The fresh and fruity vibe continues with an evolving note of green apple - this is crisp, juicy and tart. There are also hints of white chocolate and cinnamon, plus late suggestions of freshly sawn oak and white pepper.

The finish is of decent length. The fruity and citrus notes fade a little fast, but the sweetness lasts longer. The oak, malt and cinnamon spice outlive everything to give a pleasant dryness and warmth.

What's The Verdict?

This is a lovely whisky from Spirit of Yorkshire. Most that we have sampled from them have been impressive, and this is no different. The youthful nature of the spirit has been lifted by the maturation time in ex-IPA barrels - this shows itself in the wonderful zingy, zesty and citrusy nature of the whisky. Our sample was sent with a bottle of the Scarborough Fair IPA and the link is even clearer when tasting the two side by side.

Colby and Ashley Frey grow all of the grains for the whiskies on their farm in Fallon, Nevada, and their latest release is the Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon. This one is bottled at 61.25% ABV, and is available at retailers in California and Nevada along with the Frey Ranch web site with a suggested retail price of $79.99 a bottle. Other new whiskies unveiled this week:

The Glenrothes has a new 25-year-old edition. Whisky Maker Laura Rampling selected first-fill sherry-seasoned American and European Oak casks, along with with a small percentage of refill and ex-Bourbon casks to make this whisky. There’s no word on pricing.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in England has released the latest batch of their Filey Bay Peated Finish single malt. It’s matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in ex-peated whisky casks, and is available through the distillery’s web site and select retailers in the U-K for £65 a bottle.

Whisky and music go together, and that’s the case with a new project from whisky writer and musician Felipe Schrieberg and musician Paul Archibald. They play together as The Rhythm and Booze Project, and have created a whisky label as well as a record label. The first release from Rhythm and Booze records is a 13-year-old blended malt matured in a Sherry butt, and has a QR code on the back to allow consumers to download and stream the companion playlist to listen to while they enjoy a dram.

On that note…pun intended, Catoctin Creek Distilling is getting ready to release the latest edition of its Ragnarok Rye in conjunction with the heavy metal band GWAR. It’s a special bottling marking the tenth anniversary of the death of the band’s original frontman, Oderus Urungus, and is finished in rum casks.

It’ll be available at the Virginia distillery starting August first…

Bladnoch

The Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the release of a new ultra-premium selection of rare whiskies - The Samhla Collection. The trilogy of whiskies, which are named after the Scots Gaelic word for 'symbol', is designed to embody three generations of Bladnoch's history. To reflect this the three bottlings were distilled in 1966, 1990 and 2008.

The McClelland 1966 honours Bladnoch's past and is named after the distillery's founders, John and Thomas McClelland. It is the oldest ever release of Bladnoch and has been matured in a single American oak ex-bourbon cask. This has yielded just 15 bottles. It is released at 42.8% ABV and will cost £50,000.

The Prior 1990 is named after David Prior, the current owner who rescued Bladnoch from potential closure in 2015. This whisky has been matured in a Spanish oak ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry butt and there are just 50 bottles. It is released at 47.6% ABV and will cost £10,500.

The Sage 2008 is bottled to celebrate David Prior's daughter, Sage, who was born in 2008. The whisky is drawn from two American oak ex-red wine casks and there are only 100 bottles. It is released at 52.5% ABV and will cost £5,250. All three bottlings are available via enquiry on the dedicated page on the Bladnoch website - click here.

Filey Bay

Spirit of Yorkshire, the English single malt distillery, has launched the third batch of its limited edition peat influenced spirit - the Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #3. The whisky is made from 1005 Yorkshire barley and has been initailly matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels before a finishing period in casks that have previously held peated whisky. It is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #3 will be available at the distillery shop, via www.spiritofyorkshire.com and in selected specialist whisky retailers in the UK. A bottle will cost £65.

Dalmunach

The Speyside distillery of Dalmunach, which was founded in 2015, has bottled its first ever single malt for general release - the Dalmunach 6 years old. It will form part of a trilogy of whiskies from the distillery in a series named Mythical Creatures. All will be inspired by Scottish mythology. The first features the wulver, a mysterious being said to hunt and fish around the coast of the Shetland isles. The whisky has been matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and will be exclusive to The Whisky Exchange. The Dalmunach 6 years old Mythical Creatures 'Wulver' is bottled at 60% ABV and will cost £59.95 per bottle.

Filey Bay

The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery has revealed its first new release of the year - the Filey Bay Double Oak #2. The English single malt was initially distilled in 2018 and matured in ex-bourbon barrels, before a secondary maturation in lightly charred virgin American oak casks. It has then been bottled at 46% ABV and follows Double Oak #1, which sold out quickly. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are just 2,000 bottles in the second batch. The Filey Bay Double Oak #2 can be found at selected specialist retailers in the UK, plus from the distillery shop and via www.spiritofyorkshire.com. A bottle will cost £75.

Glendronach

The Highland distillery of Glendronach has announced the latest limited addition to its Cask Strength series - the Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12. The twelfth batch has used whiskies of differing ages matured in ex-Pedro Ximénez and ex-Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía in the south of Spain. The whisky has been created by Dr. Rachel Barrie, the Master Blender for Glendronach. The Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12 is bottled at 58.2% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will be available through selected specialist whisky retailers worldwide. A bottle will cost £75.

"The Glendronach Cask Strength series offers a deep insight into the distillery’s signature character, by bottling at the whisky’s natural cask strength, as was the custom before the turn of the 20th Century. Add a drop or two of water to Batch 12 to open up the liquid and reveal a cornucopia of flavours."

Jura

The island distillery of Jura has announced a new addition to its Cask Edition Series - the Jura Pale Ale Cask Edition. The whisky builds on collaborations with local craft breweries that were built during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. These were organised by Jura's whisky makers Gregg Glass and Joe Ricketts, who sourced ex-pale ale beer barrels from several breweries. The Pale Ale Cask Edition joins the Winter Edition, Red Wine Cask Edition and Rum Cask Edition in the series. It is bottled at 40% ABV and will be available through whisky retailers and supermarkets. A bottle will cost £35.

The Singleton of Glen Ord

The Singleton of Glen Ord, the Highland single malt brand, has launched the third and final bottling in its prestige limited edition Epicurean Odyssey range - The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 years old. It follows expressions at 38- and 39- years of age and is one of the last acts of Maureen Robinson, the now-retired Malt Master of The Singleton. The whisky has undergone a 28 year secondary maturation , the longest in the history of the brand, before a final finishing period in ex-rum casks that had previously held Ron Zacapa XO from Guatemala.

There are just 1,716 bottles and these will be available in selected specialist and luxury retailers worldwide. The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 years old is bottled at the natural strength of 49.5% ABV and will cost £3,300/ $US4,100.

Dalmore

The north Highland distillery of Dalmore has announced the release of two new limited edition single malts - the 2003 Vintage (pictured, above left) and 2007 Vintage (pictured, above right). They represent the second bottlings in the Dalmore Vintage Collection. Both whiskies have been created from casks hand-selected by pioneering whisky maker Gregg Glass and Richard Paterson OBE, Master Blender for Dalmore.

The Dalmore 2003 Vintage is bottled at 18 years of age and 46.9% ABV. Initial maturation was in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to a carefully selected set of casks including ex-Riversaltes sweet wine, ex-Matusalem and ex-Amoroso sherry, and small-batch ex-bourbon. A bottle will cost £350/ US$430.

The Dalmore 2007 Vinatge is bottled at 15 years of age and 46.5% ABV. Again, initial maturation was in American oak ex-bourbon casks. The whisky was later transferred to a combination of ex-Matusalen, ex-Apostoles and ex-Amoroso sherry casks and ex-Madeira sweet wine barrels. A bottle will cost £150/ US$185. Both bottlings will be available from early December in selected world markets.

Smokehead

The Islay single malt brand of Smokehead has released their latest limited edition - the Smokehead Terminado. The new bottling follows the brand's recent experimentation with different cask types that has included ex-rum and ex-stout barrels. Terminado has seen a finishing period in ex-tequila casks from Jalisco in Mexico. The exact number of bottles has not been revealed. Smokehead Terminado is released at 43% ABV and is initially exclusive to the Amazon and Smokehead websites. A bottle will cost £69/ US$83.

Spirit of Yorkshire

The Spirit of Yorkshire have announced details of two new limited editions of their Filey Bay single malt - the Port Finish Batch #1 and the Sherry Cask Reserve #3. The Filey Bay Port Finish Batch #1 (pictured, right) was distilled and filled to ex-bourbon casks in mid-2017, before being transferred to ex-Ruby Port casks in late-2020 for a two year finishing period. Just 10 casks have been used and these have yielded just 3,300 bottles at 46% ABV. Each will cost £65.

The Filey Bay Sherry Cask Reserve #3 (pictured, left) is the third annual bottling in the Sherry Cask Reserve series, which is released each Autumn. The spirit has been matured for its full term in ex-Fino sherry hogsheads. Just five have been used for the release and there are 2,000 bottles at 46% ABV. Each will cost £75. Both are available via spiritofyorkshire.com, at the distillery shop and through selected specialist whisky retailers in selected global markets.

Tullibardine

The Highland distillery of Tullibardine has announced the release of the latest whisky into its limited edition Marquis Collection - The Murray Triple Port. The spirit used was all distilled in 2008 and is the 12th bottling in the series, which was launched in 2016. The whisky has been finished in three types of ex-Port cask - white Port, Ruby Port and Tawny Port - before being combined to create the final product. Tullibardine The Murray Triple Port is released at 46% ABV and is limited to just over 18,000 bottles. It will be available worldwide via specialist whisky retailers and will cost £65/ US$80.

The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery has released Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #2 – the second batch of their peat-finished whiskies.
