Jeptha Creed, a women-owned craft distillery offering a range of award-winning craft spirits, proudly announces the launch of its 6-Year Wheated Bourbon. Known for the ground-to-glass maxim, the Jeptha Creed family farm grows renowned Bloody Butcher Corn, a non-GMO heirloom varietal that imparts a uniquely sweet yet nutty flavor profile to Jeptha Creed’s diverse and growing portfolio.

“We like to say that we’ve gone about creating our bourbon the most difficult way possible. It was about 9 years ago since our original experimentation that led us to know we would create and age a wheated bourbon,” says Joyce Nethery, Master Distiller and CEO for Jeptha Creed Distillery. “We are beyond thrilled the day has come to release our 6-year-old bourbon. This milestone makes us even more excited to see the beautiful flavor our Bloody Butcher Corn will continue to lend to our aging bourbon for years to come.”

Available on May 2, 2024, Jeptha Creed 6-Year Wheated Bourbon (46.5% ABV/93 Proof) has a mash bill of 75% Bloody Butcher Corn, 20% Malted Wheat and 5% Malted Barley, leading to a beautiful golden Citrine Gem hue. The 6-Year offers an aroma of brown butter, toasted almond and croissant, a medium creamy mouthfeel with fresh baked artisanal cinnamon bread with a honey glaze, tobacco and a bit of chocolate, finished with long, light, refreshing notes of white pepper, dark cherry and crème brûlée.

“Since we are the only distillery we know of aging bourbon for an extended amount of time using Bloody Butcher Corn, we are always so excited to see what flavor notes our guests and fans pull from our spirits,” notes Autumn Nethery, Co-Owner and Marketing Manager for Jeptha Creed.

Introduced in 2016, Jeptha Creed is owned and operated by Joyce and Autumn Nethery, a remarkable mother-daughter duo, standing as the only such team in Kentucky’s whiskey-making landscape. The Nethery family owns over 2,000 acres throughout Shelby County, which includes the distillery property and their home farm. Through careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, Jeptha Creed Distillery has gained a loyal following and earned several prestigious awards, including numerous gold medals and recognition from esteemed spirits competitions. Jeptha Creed prides itself on being a ground-to-glass distillery, striving to be sustainable and thoughtful at every step of production. The 64 acres that make up the distillery property are covered in crops that produce grain, corn, fruits, and other ingredients that will go straight into the Jeptha Creed bourbon, vodka, moonshine, and brandy. Located along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour, Jeptha Creed Distillery is open to visitors and offers tasting experiences, tours, and spaces to enjoy the delicious products.

The 6-Year Wheated Bourbon (SRP: $59.99) is available starting May 2, 2024, in the distillery gift shop, online spirit shop, and in select retail locations throughout KY, IN, TN, IL, MO, TX, FL, GA and CO. Find a store near you by visiting https://jepthacreed.com/where-to-buy/.

What will they think of next! There is a new national flag in the USA and it has nothing to do with a change of color.  The flag measures 12 feet by 7 feet is was debuted on June 14 by Jeptha Creed. The giant flag was unveiled at its Shelbyville campus, in honor of the veterans who signed the barrels.

This gives new meaning to honored signatures. On June 14, 2016, the distillery asked a few veterans and active soldiers to sign or autograph bourbon barrels that were just about to begin the maturity process. The whiskey was christened Red White and Blue Kentucky straight bourbon.

Making the Flag

Jeptha Creed was creative in putting the empty barrels to honor the memories of the veterans who autographed them. The concept is not that new, people in Shepherdsville are used to seeing flags made from all types of material.

What is special about this flag was that the maker was also one of the soldiers who signed the barrels! The distiller contracted the local company called Cruise Custom Flags to make it happen.

Chris Cruise has made many similar flags before, even though not that big and maybe with lesser barrels. The retired US Army paratrooper was especially excited to have his signature serving as part of a national flag and got working immediately.

Many towners showed up for the unveiling program held at the distillery’s visitor center. The flag is now on display along with other tokens including challenge coins given to the distillery by visiting military personnel.

However, Cruise did not stop there. In addition to making the giant bourbon flag that is now on display, he also fashioned smaller “Lieutenant Flags”. These are made for visitors and tourists who desire to keep a souvenir.

Although they are only available in limited quantities, you can get a  competitive price of $110 at the distillery’s gift shop.

Welcome to the latest in my 'Get to Know' series. Today's turn is a unique distillery in Kentucky founded by mother-and-daughter Joyce and Autumn Nethery. What is amazing about this distillery is that it sits on 64 acres of farmland where they grow their Bloody Butcher Corn that is used to create their spirits making this a true ground-to-glass distillery.

Female Ownership and Female Master Distiller

Jeptha Creed was founded by Joyce and Autumn Nethery, making it one of the only female owned distilleries. Joyce (the mother), serves as Master Distiller, also making this one of the only distilleries with a female Master Distiller.

A little bit more about the founders. Joyce earned a Master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Louisville's Speed Scientific School, and for 15 years worked as a process engineer in industrial scale distillation. She then spent a decade teaching high school chemistry and physics.

Autumn followed in her mom's footsteps by studying distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. She also earned a marketing degree from the University of Kentucky and has a goal of expanding the Jeptha Creed brand to all 50 states.

Bloody Butcher Corn & Local Mash Bills

Jeptha Creed grows or locally sources every ingredient used in their spirits, including growing our own corn. The Bloody Butcher corn is an heirloom variety of corn, dating back to the mid-19th century in the United States. It’s non-GMO and open-pollinated, meaning they save seeds year after year to replant. When growing, the corn got the name from the color of the corn which forms burnt oranges and reds in a splotchy pattern, said to resemble a butcher’s bloody apron.

In terms of taste, Bloody Butcher has a distinctive nutty sweetness that brings out notes of vanilla and toasted pecans in their bourbon and a variety of other notes in their other products. It does cost more, but it makes Jeptha Creed unique.

Visiting Experiences and Location

At the current time, Jeptha Creed doesn't offer distillery tours, however, they have multiple tasting options starting with their spirit tasting. This occurs every hour and allows guest to learn about the Jeptha Creed family and includes quarter ounce pours of Straight 4-Grain Bourbon, Bottled-In-Bond High-Rye Bourbon, 90% Bloody Butcher Corn Bourbon, and Original Moonshine.

There is also a barrel tasting option that runs for $45 a person and allows personalized tasting straight from the barrel and a mixology class for $35 a person where you can learn about the brand and learn to make two seasonal cocktails.

With all this and more, Jeptha Creed is a brand you should put high on your visit list next time you're headed to Kentucky.

Jeptha Creed Red White & Blue Bourbon

Bloody Butcher Corn is the base grain for all of Jeptha Creed’s bourbons. It usually occupies the majority of the mash bill. So it is a bit of a change of pace to have it share equal billing with 2 other heirloom corns. However, that’s exactly what happens in the latest release from Jeptha Creed, their Red White & Blue Bourbon. This bourbon is a unique mix of 3 heirloom corns, each in the same amount. Bloody Butcher Corn – The Foundation of Jeptha Creed Bourbons

Bloody Butcher Corn is the base grain for all of Jeptha Creed’s bourbons. It usually occupies the majority of the mash bill. However, that’s exactly what happens in the latest release from Jeptha Creed, their Red White & Blue Bourbon. This bourbon is a unique mix of 3 heirloom corns, with equal proportions of each.

Mash Bill – Jeptha Creed Red White & Blue Bourbon

  • 25% Heirloom White Corn

  • 20% Malted Rye
  • 5% Malted Barley

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Pear, apple, dark cherry, plum, sweet and burnt caramel, brown sugar; light leather, oak & lemon citrus; subtle earthy graininess; relatively mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Caramel & brown sugar; dry oak, char and a hint of leather develop later
👉🏻Finish: Spice builds and caramel, mild sweetness and light leather linger with dry oak and mild char; earthiness & grassiness are there, too; Fairly long finish with a moderate burn

The nose of the Red White & Blue Bourbon is an interesting combination of numerous flavors ranging from fruit to caramel to leather, oak, earthy graininess and brown sugar. It is difficult to find a dominant one, but with time, each flavor can be teased out. Leather becomes more noticeable with each successive sip. The taste has a the expected caramel and brown sugar, but yet a a bit more. The flavors carry through into the finish which continues with moderate spice and dry oakiness, leather and char. There’s a background earthy grassiness, too.

Summary

Red White & Blue Bourbon has unique complex flavors, similar to the other Jeptha Creed bourbons that I have reviewed (Four Grain Bourbon and High Rye Bourbon). Since I believe a lot of the complexity of those bourbons come from the Bloody Butcher Corn, that gets compounded in this bourbon with the addition of two other heirloom corns, each adding their unique flavors. Like their other bourbons, Red White & Blue Bourbon is another one for those looking for something a bit different, but it takes it to a higher level than the Four Grain and the High Rye Bottled in Bond Bourbon. If these flavors appeal to you, then definitely give Jeptha Creed Red White & Blue Bourbon a try!

Jeptha Creed Bottled In Bond Rye Bourbon Review

Jeptha Creed Distillery celebrated their 5th anniversary by releasing this Rye Bourbon Mash Bill Bottled In Bond Bourbon on November 11, 2021. Similar to their Four Grain Bourbon, the base grain is their family farm grown Bloody Butcher Corn. That unique heirloom corn, as well as malted rye, give this bourbon some unique flavor characteristics. Read all about it in our full review!

Jeptha Creed Distillery celebrated their 5th anniversary by releasing this Rye Bourbon Mash Bill Bottled In Bond Bourbon on November 11, 2021. So, let’s take a quick flashback to get up to speed on this mother and daughter owned distillery. Joyce Nethery and her daughter, Autumn, are the team that own and run Jeptha Creed Distillery. They do things a little bit differently, but in a good way. First, the primary grain in all of their bourbons is Bloody Butcher Corn, grown on their own family farm. Second, they use malted rye and malted wheat as their secondary grains, which is a bit unconventional

In August of 2016 Jeptha Creed distilled their first bourbon. They soon after opened their doors to the public on November 11, 2016. For the first few years, they sold mainly unaged spirits, including flavored and unflavored vodkas and moonshine. The goal was to let their bourbon age, and not sell it before it was ready. Ultimately, they released their first straight bourbon, the very unique Four Grain Bourbon on May 10, 2019. It was followed by this Bottled In Bond Rye Bourbon in November 2019.

Mash Bill

75% Bloody Butcher Corn, 20% malted rye & 5% malted barley

Like the original Four Grain Bourbon, this Bottled In Bond “Rye Heavy” Bourbon (as Jeptha Creed refers to it) has the estate grown Bloody Butcher Corn making up the majority of its mash bill. However, unlike the Four Grain, this bourbon uses only three grains. The secondary grain is malted rye, and there is a small percentage of malted barley, too.

Tasting Notes – Jeptha Creed Rye Mash Bill Bottled In Bond Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Mild brown sugar sweetness and light leather; graininess and dark cherries in the background at first; subtle smokiness; as time goes on, burnt caramel and light rye spices become much more noticeable; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Brown sugar, dry oak, dark cherry, caramel, mild grassiness in the background and some smokiness
👉🏻Finish: Capsaicin spice builds fairly rapidly and continues into a fairly long finish. There’s also some dry oak, barrel char and smokiness, with a moderate burn. Mild leather and some grassiness becomes more noticeable as time goes on. Smoke lingers.

This bourbon changes quite a bit from the nose to the finish. The spice and dry oak which develop as the sip goes on are not really suggested by the nose. The nose initially is dominated by leather, brown sugar, dark cherries and graininess. However, after the first sip, a pleasant burnt caramel and some rye spices become more noticeable. In the taste, some of the dry oak begins to appear, to be joined by growing spice in the finish. I also notice a smokiness throughout, almost like a mildly peated scotch.

A Unique Flavor Profile

The flavor profile of this Bottled In Bond bourbon has some interesting and complex notes. Likely, this is the effect of the unique mash bill. I find that Blood Butcher Corn adds some more grainy and earthy flavors to whiskey. In addition, malted rye also adds significantly different notes than the much more commonly used unmalted variety. All of this combines to create flavors that might be a bit unexpected. The spice and dryness in the finish, as well as the smokiness, came as a bit of a surprise as well.

I am enjoying this bourbon. However, similar to the Four Grain, it brings forth some flavors that are a bit unexpected. If you are in the mood for something different, are in the mood for a little smoke, and these flavors appeal to you, then definitely give Jeptha Creed Bottled In Bond Rye Bourbon a try!
