Welcome to our first Inbox of 2024. Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Buffalo Trace
The Kentucky distillery of Buffalo Trace has announced a new blended whiskey, which is in collaboration with 8x Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Chris Stapleton. Traveller Whiskey has been created using several different recipes from within the distillery portfolio and was selected as the best from 50 experimental blends - the final choice was Blend No.40. The whiskey has been created by Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller at Buffalo Trace, with input from Stapleton. Traveller Whiskey is bottled at 45% ABV and will be available in selected retailers in selected US states. A bottle will cost $45.

"Partnering with Buffalo Trace and Harlen Wheatley feels like a bucket list scenario. Some things just make total sense – and this is definitely one of those things. I believe what we have achieved with Traveller Whiskey not only represents our shared history but also a common artistic vision."
Chris Stapleton.

Johnnie Walker

The premium blended Scotch whisky brand of Johnnie Walker has announced details of its annual Blue Label bottling, which celebrates the Chinese lunar new year. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, considered by many as the mightiest of all zodiac creatures. The packaging features a graphic design of a wood dragon, which has been created by Asian-American artist James Jean. This design was inspired by Chinese scroll painting and Japanese woodblock printing.

The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Lunar New Year Edition 2024 has been created by Emma Walker, Master Blender for Johnnie Walker using some of Diageo's rarest stock, including whisky distilled at now-closed distilleries. It is bottled at 40% ABV and will be available in specialist and luxury retailers in selected markets globally. A bottle will cost £225/ $US295.

Sazerac owned Buffalo Trace has announced a new blended whiskey that was produced under the supervision of Buffalo Trace Distillery's Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley in collaboration with Chris Stapleton.

Harlen Wheatley says:
When making art – and we really do think that both Chris' music and the whiskey we make at Buffalo Trace is art – you experiment, test, adjust, and don't give up until you've got it right. That's why we experimented with more than 50 blends before agreeing that Blend No. 40 would be it for Traveller.
Chris Stapleton says:

Partnering with Buffalo Trace Distillery and Harlen Wheatley feels like a bucket list scenario for me. Some things just make total sense – and this is definitely one of those things. Bottles from barrels that Harlen has cared for have been with us for every note we've ever recorded, backstage before shows and in all the moments we've celebrated along the way. I believe what we've achieved with Traveller Whiskey not only represents our shared history but also a common artistic vision and uncompromising standards of taste. I couldn't be prouder of what we've made.

This new whiskey is bottled at 90 proof (45% alcohol), comes in with a $39.99 MSRP, and carries the following tasting notes:

Nose: vanilla, aged fruit and buttery shortbread are rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak.

Taste: Oak, sweet maple, tart currant and leather. The flavor profile also showcases a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut and oak flavors

Finish: Robust

My Take

I've never been a fan of celebrity endorsed and branded whiskeys and bourbons. On the whole, these tend to be more style than substance. The price feels a bit high for a blended whiskey without an age statement. I also know nothing about Chris Stapleton, but it bothers me he spelled Traveller with two 'L's' so that's another negative with this one for me.

The week’s top story was the sale of the independent bottler Single Cask Nation to the Artisanal Spirits Company, which also owns the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The two bottlers will co-exist under one corporate umbrella, with SCN founders Joshua Hatton and Jason Johnstone-Yellin remaining in charge. We’ll talk with them on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, there’s new life planned for a long-closed Speyside distillery and the winners of the 2023 John Barleycorn Awards have been announced.

News broke in September ’23 of an alliance between the Bourbon Industry’s superstar Master Distiller at Buffalo Trace and the global sensation Stapleton. Below is an update provided this week from Sazerac.

UPDATE FROM SAZERAC:

Created in partnership with Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley and Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and musician Chris Stapleton, Traveller is proudly blended and bottled at the World’s Most Award-Winning Distillery under Wheatley’s expert supervision and is the carefully curated result of countless hours of testing, tasting and dedication to craftsmanship.

Traveller brings together the collective artistry of Stapleton and Wheatley to create a uniquely approachable, sippable whiskey.  Over 50 blends were considered on the journey to find the chosen recipe for Traveller – Blend No. 40.

Bottled at 90 proof, Traveller Whiskey is characterized by notes of oak, sweet maple, tart currant, and leather. Complex aromas of vanilla, aged fruit, and buttery shortbread are rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak. The flavor profile also showcases a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut, and oak flavors, closing with a robust finish. Traveller is a completely unique combination of whiskeys hand-selected from The Sazerac Company’s award-winning distilleries.

Traveller Whiskey will be widely released to retailers, bars and restaurants nationwide beginning in early 2024 at a suggested retail price of $39.99 (local taxes and fees will vary).  Learn more about this upcoming release HERE.

PRESS RELEASE From Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley and 11x American Country Music Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician Chris Stapleton (who was born just down the road from the Distillery in Lexington, KY) are partnering to create a new-to-world whiskey brand: Traveller Whiskey.

A first-of-its-kind collaboration from Buffalo Trace Distillery, Traveller was inspired by the belief that good whiskey is a lot like a good song… it requires no explanation, and you can simply settle in and enjoy without pressure or pretense.

Traveller will be proudly blended under Harlen Wheatley’s expert supervision and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Bringing together the collective artistry of Stapleton and Wheatley, dozens of blends were considered on the journey to find the chosen recipe for Traveller.

“In creating Traveller, we tried over 50 different recipes, experimenting, testing, and adjusting until we found a complex and approachable flavor profile worthy of the whiskey drinker who will enjoy it. In the end, there was one clear winner – Blend No. 40 – that everyone agreed was worthy to be Traveller Whiskey,” said Wheatley

Tasting details and product information will be available later in the year, with the whiskey slated to be widely released beginning in early 2024.
