Three years ago, Uber rideshare service app purchased USA-based alcohol delivery service app Drizly for a whopping $1.1 billion. Uber is now experiencing a hangover and closing Drizly as of March 2024. Uber says that, instead, they will integrate alcohol delivery into their homegrown delivery service app, Uber Eats.

Since the purchase, Drizly had operated independently under Uber with a separate app – despite being integrated into the Uber Eats app – as they offered local liquor stores the opportunities to provide their own deliveries to Drizly customers in more than 1,400 U.S. cities.

However, a massive cybersecurity breach in 2020 – which reportedly exposed the information of approximately 2.5 million customers – may have assisted in the demise of Drizly. An investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) found that Drizly’s CEO had been aware of the company’s security issues since 2018 but took no action to fix them. The FTC then ordered, in 2022, Drizly to wipe its systems of any personal data it collected and restrict the types of customer information it was allowed to collect.

Tonic and mixer brand Betty Buzz has flown across the pond and “officially” been named as an official sponsor of the popular Welsh-based Wrexham Association Football Club (AFC) for the 2023-24 season.

Wrexham was a team in the UK’s National League that gained worldwide notoriety after being purchased by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and being the focus of “Welcome to Wrexham”, a documentary on Hulu [Disney Plus in UK] that followed the team’s attempts to get promoted to the next level of the English football pyramid, League Two, which occurred last month.

The brand is owned by Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively [“Gossip Girl”] and will sponsor the official training kits for both Wrexham AFC’s men’s and women’s teams for the 2023-2024 season. Lively issued an “official” statement to announce the news.

“The owners of Wrexham AFC reached out to me through official channels. Our team had, of course, heard of Wrexham AFC but once we officially learned about their refreshing vision, we knew it was the right official fit for our refreshing sparkling beverage. Officially.”

Betty Buzz joins the Wrexham AFC spirits-associated brands as Lively’s husband Reynolds owns Aviation Gin and McElhenney owns Four Walls Whiskey. Reynolds and McElhenney also issued an official statement regarding the announcement.

“Betty Buzz pairs well with any beverage – whether it’s Ryan’s Aviation Gin or Rob’s Four Walls Whiskey. But if any of you pair it with Rob’s Four Walls Whiskey, Ryan will hunt you down and make you regret that choice. You can also just drink it alone. Anything but pairing it with Rob’s delicious whiskey.”

Additionally, Betty Buzz will also be the name on the hospitality suite used by the co-chairmen at Wrexham’s home, known as the StoK Racecourse Ground.

Actress Blake Lively [“Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Gossip Girl”] has released the first promotional video for her line of sparkling low-calorie mixers called Betty Buzz, which was originally released in September 2021.

Lively’s Betty Buzz line-up offers five flavors – Tonic Water, Sparking Grapefruit, Meyer Lemon Club Soda, Sparkling Lemon Lime, and Ginger Beer – each can make two drinks when mixed with any spirit.

The name is a reference to Lively’s late father, Ernie, who inspired her to name the line after her grandmother and aunt, who were both known as Betty. Lively’s husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, is the co-owner of Aviation American Gin, which was acquired by Diageo in 2020.

Betty Buzz is currently being made available in the USA and online [bettybuzz.com] with a variety pack of 12 priced $30.

Tasting Notes: Eli Mason Old Fashioned Cocktail Mixer

Vital Stats: You can pick it up in a 10oz bottle for $15 making 10 drinks or a 750 ML bottle for $30 making 50 drinks. The directions for mixing are on the bottle and recommend 2 oz. Bourbon or Whiskey with 1 oz. Eli Mason Old Fashioned Cocktail Mixer. Combine ingredients and pour over ice. See, wasn’t that easy? Let’s give it a review.

The Review:   Jim mixed up two for us to try and followed the directions using Leiper’s Fork Distillery straight rye whiskey that we reviewed last week. It was perfect as we were in the stillhouse recording and temperatures were around 95 degrees with the big shinny still running. We must say that Eli Mason has hit a home run with this mixer and we will be sure to always have a bottle with us to pair with the amazing whiskey we find from across American. A deliciously rich, intense Old-Fashioned.

Make sure you visit https://elimason.com and buy some today. While there you can also see the many recipes, plus other mixers like mint julep and whiskey smash. They also have bar tools and bar sets available. Cheers
