Tasting Notes – Bluegrass Distillers Bottled In Bond Blue Corn Bourbon Review

Let’s Taste it!

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

The nose reminds me of a nice bowl of maple brown sugar oatmeal, like the one from Quaker Oats that I loved as a kid. Not that there is much maple, but it is more of the feeling. There may be a little corn muffin in the mix as well, and an overall graininess and doughiness which is pleasantly soothing. It is quite sweet, with light butterscotch tossed in for good measure.

Bluegrass Distillers Bottled In Bond Blue Corn Bourbon has a noticeable body and graininess, in a pleasant “warm bowl of cereal on a cold snowy day” kind of way, that comes forward even more in the taste. There’s also subtle fruit; perhaps blueberries. The same flavors, noticeable sweetness, and warming feeling continue into the finish. Then, later, some black pepper spice carries on with a bit of barrel char, too.

Conclusion

If you are a pot still bourbon fan and enjoy full rich flavors with some “graininess”, then this is bourbon you’ll want to try. I’m a big fan of all of those characteristics, and this Blue Corn BiB bourbon as well! Cheers!🥃

Bluegrass Distillers Blue Corn Bottled In Bond Bourbon Review

Bluegrass Distillers Blue Corn Bottled in Bond Bourbon is a unique bourbon. Not only does Bluegrass Distillers use a non-GMO blue corn grown in central Kentucky, they also use wheat as the secondary grain. So, why is wheat unique? Well, because the majority of bourbons have rye as their secondary grain. We don’t even have to guess at the exact recipe; the folks at Bluegrass Distillers share the mash bill with us right there on the label. It’s 75% Blue Corn, 21% Wheat, 4% Malted Barley.

A Unique Bourbon

At Least 4 Years Old

So, how old is this bourbon? The age is stated only as “Aged at least 4 years”, which, by definition this bourbon must be, as that is one of the defining features of a “bonded” bourbon. That’s another cool thing; the Bottled In Bond designation also makes this bourbon unique. There aren’t too many blue corn bourbons out there; Balcones makes blue corn bourbon and corn whiskey and Google mentions a few others, but that’s really it. So a Bottled In Bond, wheated, blue corn bourbon is a pretty rare bird indeed!

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet cornbread, honey, caramel, apple cider; hint of apricot leather candy; light toast and some oak; touch of cinnamon on a background of subtle oatmeal like graininess; moderate alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Sweet cornbread, honey, syrupy, with notes of sweet berries, perhaps blueberry; mild oak; barrel char
👉🏻Finish: The same flavors and sweetness continue into the finish. Some black pepper spice, subtle cinnamon and barrel char grow; light oak lingers; moderately long with a moderate burn

Summary

Bluegrass Distillers Blue Corn Bottled In Bond Bourbon is quite a sweet bourbon; almost syrupy, pretty much all the way to the very end. The flavors are full and rich, with a nice warming sensation. Towards the end the flavors do become spicier with a bit of a burn, but it never gets out of hand. Somewhere in the middle, there are some sweet berries. Blueberries come to mind, but perhaps I am being swayed by the “blue” in blue corn.

Have you had any whiskeys from Bluegrass Distillers? What about this, or any, Blue Corn Bourbon? Cheers!🥃

But That’s Not All!
