A blast from the past will be returning for next weekend’s [February 11, 2024] Super Bowl contest between the San Francisco 49er’s and Kansas City Chiefs as the Coors Light Chill Train will be boarding passengers in their first-ever 100% dedicated Super Bowl advertisement. The lager-carrying locomotive first appeared in 2005, but has been silent in more than a decade.

The Coors Light Chill Train gives a limited number of “passengers” in Canada and the USA a chance to virtually insert themselves into the train car during a 30-second advertisement. The train will go by in a blur during the actual Super Bowl broadcast spot, but Molson Coors will also be featuring a slo-mo version of the ad online in which each passenger will be visible. Each participant will receive a contract and be entitled to $500 in talent fees, in addition to receiving limited-edition commemorative items.

Seating has officially been opened to booking but a limited number of new opportunities to book a seat will be added daily at 10 a.m. PST through February 2, 2024 [aka Groundhog Day].

Diageo-owned Crown Royal has enlisted former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters musical artist, Dave Grohl for their upcoming Super Bowl commercial in which they thank Canada for a myriad of inventions.

Grohl – who is not Canadian – proceeds to rattle off a list of artists, domestic items, foods, sports and gadgets originating in the Great White North for which he is thankful, including Rush, Eugene Levy [which would inherently include “SCTV” – though only some members of that comedy group are shown], the electric wheelchair, ironing board, peanut butter, paint roller, basketball, hockey and even football [though, alas, no “Kids in the Hall”].

In the end of this 30-second version – the full 60-second version will run during tomorrow’s game – Grohl unfurls a large Crown Royal banner with the sentiment toward Canada.

Crown Royal was the first spirits brand to advertise in the Super Bowl in 2017 – the first year spirits brands were allowed to advertise during the game – and, in 2021, became the official whiskey sponsor of the National Football League.

In a television advertisement that ran before the Super Bowl, Miller64 settled the calorie “debate” with Bud Light’s Next by employing world-renowned mathematician Ken Ono, Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, to determine if 64 is a smaller number than 80.

When asked in this commercial to solve this conundrum, Ono maintains that 64 is less than 80 – thus proving that Miller’s Miller64 light beer product is lighter than Bud Light’s Next light beer with 80 calories.

Ono currently serves as the section chair for mathematics at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is an expert in number theory. He’s published over 200 research articles and was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering.
