O.H. Ingram River Aged recently announced the release of its third annual Flagship Bourbon. Released once-a-year, this extremely limited, premium expression of O.H. Ingram was curated by Founder Hank Ingram and Master Blender Scott Beyer. This year’s batch arrives at 102.3 proof.

“The colder months are here and so is the 2023 Flagship,” said Ingram. “The Flagship Bourbon is a true labor of love, as we go through the barrel selection process with great care and intention. We want every Flagship batch to be distinct. This year features a 12-barrel blend selected from among our favorite barrels, and so I’m proud to let folks experience the complexities and character of the spirit.”

Ingram’s 2022 annual Flagship SRP was $99 as we anticipate a similar range.

2023 Flagship Bourbon Tasting Notes (Brand Provided):

  • NOSE: An aroma of vanilla frosting and fresh cut hay mingled with hints of pear and caramel apples.
  • PALATE: The palate is dark and rich, with soft baking spices and notes of cocoa and toasted almond.
  • FINISH: A long and lingering finish with nuances of brown sugar and honey, all balanced by the gentle embrace of oak.

Earlier this year, O.H. Ingram relocated to Columbus, KY and doubled its capacity for barrel aging. The expansion included a second floating barrelhouse bringing total aging capacity to over 6,000 barrels. The new location can also accommodate more than 15 additional floating barrelhouses.

Moored on the banks of the Mississippi River in Columbus, KY, O.H. Ingram barrels are exposed to the microclimate and humidity of the river, along with its drastic rise and fall, to provoke a unique interaction between oak and spirit. These conditions are not available inside a traditional barrelhouse, and the result is a whiskey with exceptional complexity.

They call it “Mellowed on the Mississippi“. You can see full details about the unique aging here

O.H. Ingram is currently available on shelves in Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. It is also available for online purchase via Seelbach’s.

Like the Ingram rye I reviewed not too long ago, the O.H. Ingram River Aged Bourbon 105 Proof spends time maturing in Ingram’s floating rickhouse. A lot of attention goes into the motion of the barrels and there is a lot of debate as to what it does or doesn’t contribute. Me, I think it’s minor. The real star of maturation is humidity and temperature.

O.H. Ingram River Aged Bourbon 105 Proof Review

Being on the river they get wide swings of temperature, but they also get a lot of that all-important humidity. I’ve had the theory for years that one of the key factors to well matured, non-woody, whiskey is humidity and that’s something Frey Bourbon proved beyond a shadow of a doubt. Of all the factors of the whole river setup, I think that’s the one most at play here.

Let’s get to drinkin’!

O.H. Ingram River Aged Bourbon 105 Proof- Overall Thoughts and Score

This blew past my expectations, which were pretty low, and I ended up enjoying this sample quite a bit. It’s not every day you get a good smelling, good tasting whiskey combined with an informative and transparent label.  It’s a combo I  can’t help but feel good about while sipping it… or mixing it. It makes an excellent Old Fashioned.

I like what they’re doing, I like that they’re open about sourcing from MGP but then take the aging into their own hands to make something a bit different in the market. There’s no marketing BS here, just an interesting experiment in environmental factors and whiskey maturation. An experiment you can drink.

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)
