Waterford Distillery founder Mark Reynier has no shortage of opinions about how he feels whisky should be made, and he’s putting those opinions into the bottle. Reynier has butted heads with the whisky establishment many times over the years because of his passion for flavor above all else, critics be damned. He’ll share some of his opinions with us on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. Irish whiskey producer Waterford Distillery has released Heritage: Hunter – an Irish whiskey showcasing a rare barley variety, Hunter, from the past. Irish whiskey producer Waterford Distillery has released Heritage: Hunter – an Irish whiskey showcasing a rare barley variety, Hunter, from the past.

Waterford Distillery Heritage: Hunter Irish whiskey uses the barley variety, Hunter [named after pioneering plant breeder Dr Herbert Hunter] which was introduced in 1959 and was noted for its distinctive flavor.

Waterford Distillery’s Heritage: Hunter was matured in a combination of first-fill and virgin American oak, French oak, and Vin Doux Naturel casks and is said to offer notes of apple, cloves, lemon and orange.

Only 10,000 bottles of Waterford Distillery Heritage: Hunter are being made available for $115 per bottle.

Speyside distillery Benriach has released the second edition of their single malt whisky as part of their Malting Season series.

Benriach Malting Season Second Edition is made entirely using barley malted at Benriach’s floor maltings – in this case, specifically concerto barley, chosen for its cereal flavor – and was matured in 30 first-fill bourbon casks [all distilled November 2013], bottled at 48.9% alcohol by volume [97.8 proof] and is said to contain notes of apple, barley sugar, citrus, honey, mandarin, vanilla and white chocolate.

Benriach Malting Season Second Edition is being made available for $120 per bottle beginning in June 2022.
