Lodestar

The American whiskey brand of Lodestar has launched its inaugural bottling. Simply named, Lodestar American Whiskey, the new product is a blend of high rye bourbon and American single malt from unnamed sources, and comes with the tagline 'All Flavor, No Fuss'.

The brand was co-founded last year by cousins Anna Axster and Wendelin von Schroder in Los Angeles with the aim of creating an 'inclusive and approachable whiskey'. Lodestar American Whiskey is bottled at 45% ABV and is initially available in selected states of the US. It will retail at $US45 per bottle.

"As we began developing the brand, it is important to us that our whiskey is approachable, and can be enjoyed neat or in a cocktail. We wanted it to be inclusive and inviting to those who are new to the whiskey community while also satisfying those who enjoy whiskey regularly."
Anna Axster.

Longmorn

The Speyside distillery of Longmorn has announced two rare cask strength expressions that will initially be exclusive to the American market - the Longmorn 18 years old and Longmorn 22 years old. Both have been matured in a combination of American oak first-fill and re-fill ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads. The releases commemorate the 130th anniversary of the distillery being founded by John Duff in 1894.

Both whiskies show a contemporary new look and packaging that features a purple and gold livery. The Longmorn 18 years old is bottled at the natural strength of 57.6% ABV and will retail for $US280. The Longmorn 22 years old is bottled at 54.5% ABV and will retail for $US440. The pair will be available in selected states throughout the US.

Macallan

The famous Speyside distillery of Macallan have announced the first bottling designed to celebrate their 200th anniversary this year - Tales of the Macallan Volume II. The new whisky is the second in a planned series of remarkably rare single malts. It has been created by Euan Kennedy, the Lead Whisky Maker at Macallan, and was distilled in 1949 and bottled in 2022.

The whisky is housed in a bespoke handcrafted crystal decanter designed by renowned French crystal maker Lalique. The decanter is presented in a book that conceals it within its 800 pages. This was created by London-based bookbinders Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf. Each volume of the series is designed to tell the story of Alexander Reid, Macallan's founder, and he features on the packaging in the form of illustrations by British artist Andrew Davidson.

The Tales of the Macallan Volume II is limited to just 344 decanters and is bottled at 44.8% ABV. It is available at the Macallan distillery in Speyside, Macallan Boutiques worldwide and selected luxury retailers including Harrods, Selfridge's and Berry Brothers & Rudd. Each decanter will cost £77,400/ $US89,000/ €89,000.

Macallan

The Speyside distillery of Macallan has announced the second single malt in their A Night on Earth series. The Macallan A Night on Earth - The Journey has seen the brand collaborate with Chinese mixed-media artist Nini Sum on the packaging. The design has been inspired by Sum's experiences and memories of celebrating Chinese New Year with family in Shanghai.

The new whisky features a combination of both American oak and European oak ex-sherry casks, plus American oak ex-bourbon barrels. The Macallan A Night on Earth - The Journey is bottled at 43% ABV and is available through selected specialist and luxury retailers in the UK. A wider global release is expected in early 2024. Midleton

Irish Distillers have introduced the fifth bottling into their limited edition Dair Ghaelach series - the Midleton Very Rare Dair Gaehlach Kilranelagh Wood. Dair Gaehlach translates from Gaelic as 'Irish oak' and each expression has featured casks made from Irish oak. This fifth bottling has seen a finishing period in virgin Irish oak casks made with wood sourced from the Kilranelagh Estate, which is located in Co. Wicklow.

The wood for the casks was sourced from just six trees. These were identified by Ger Buckley, the Master Cooper at Midleton, and Paddy Purser, the Forest Sector Manager. The whiskeys used in the blend were initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to the virgin Irish oak casks for 20 months. The blend has been created by Kevin O'Gorman, the Master Blender for Midleton.

The Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach Kilranelagh Wood has been released at different ABV strengths for different world markets. These markets include China, France, Ireland, the UK and USA. The exact number of bottles was not revealed in the press release. Each will cost £425/ €490.

This announcement follows the remarkable sale of aMacallan 1926 bottle sold for $2.7 million on November 18th. The release featuring the art of Italian artist Valerio Adami made a new record for any bottle of spirit or wine sold at auction.

John Robertson, Managing Director of Caskshare, remarked, "We are honored to be able to bring you this very rare whisky from one of Scotland's best-known distilleries. We are passionate about sourcing the best whisky Scotland has to offer and this whisky distilled at The Macallan Distillery is no different. It's a rare and momentous occasion when a cask of such unparalleled rarity emerges. We’ve coupled this whisky with an exceptional piece of art and anticipate that it will be eagerly sought after by both discerning connoisseurs and fervent collectors alike."

The Collective Series has been curated to encompass a spectrum, from reasonably priced to opulent single-cask whiskies. Each bottle carries its own unique identity, and the artistic labels embody a profound connection to the product's story, provenance, and craftsmanship.

“The artistry on our bottles is a deliberate choice – just as we curate distinctive whiskies, we also curate collaborations with artists for the bottle design,” says John Robertson, Managing Director of Caskshare.  “For this release, we teamed up with acclaimed American artist Tristan Eaton for the exclusive bottle design. Drawing inspiration from two of Eaton's evocative murals paying homage to Alexander Graham Bell –the Scottish-born inventor of the telephone and of the American Telecoms Company– we felt that this was the perfect partner to beautifully showcase the intricate interplay between Scottish innovation and American artistic ingenuity as we launch the Collective Series here in the US.

When Caskshare launched several years ago, it leaned into its single glass-to-cask concept but quickly realized they wanted to put a spin on these bottlings and created what they call their Collective Series.  Through this Collective Series, Caskshare's vision is to have all of its special single casks become part of an ongoing series of collective bottlings, featuring special rarities and super high-end gems.  Up until now, collectors and enthusiasts would order from the UK site and when the bottles were ready, would receive their special purchases.  This applied to everyone, from the UK, the US and beyond.  But since the US market has a large majority of high-end whisky buyers & collectors, the company launched its US site to provide greater access to unique bottles Caskshare endorsed and curated, all with the vision of eventually offering its own acquired single caskswith shipping directly from the US. --giving customers access to whisky you can't buy anywhere else with local shipping and duty rates.

This new limited-run release is the first to be available to consumers in US dollars and is the first step in bringing in the rest of the collection series to Caskshare US, finally fully launching the concept here in the US.  Within the next few months, the Collective Series bottles which have been available via Caskshare.com will now be available to be shipped locally with no international shipping costs.

Founded in 2019, Caskshare is a pioneering whisky business dedicated to making the world of unique, one-of-a-kind whiskies accessible to all, bridging the gap between whisky aficionados and exceptional single malt experiences. With an extensive network of connoisseurs, Caskshare brings forth the most extraordinary offerings, connecting passionate whisky enthusiasts with limited-edition treasures.

Here is the round-up of the news from this week.

________

Glenallachie
The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced its first new release of the year - the Glenallachie 2012 Vintage Cuvée Wine Cask Finish. The whisky has been created by Billy Walker, the Master Blender of Glenallachie. Cuvée is a French term used in the wine sector to reference a blend that comprises more than one variety of grape. In this case Walker has used ex-red wine barrels from four different wineries across three European regions - Valpolicella from Italy, plus Languedoc and two Premier Cru Classés from Bordeaux in France.

All the liquid was distilled in 2012 and was initially filled to American oak ex-bourbon casks. This was then transferred to the four ex-wine barrels for a 20-month finishing period, before being married together. The whisky has been bottled at 9 years of age and 48% ABV. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Glenallachie 2012 Vintage Cuvée Wine Cask Finish will be available in selected global markets and will cost £54 per bottle.

Glen Scotia
The award-winning Campbeltown distillery of Glen Scotia has announced the latest addition to its core range - the Glen Scotia 21 years old. The new whisky bridges the gap in the range between the 18- and 25-year old expressions. The whisky has been created using both re-fill ex-bourbon and re-fill American oak casks, before these were transferred for a six month finishing period in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The casks were hand selected by Iain McAlister, the Distillery Manager.

The Glen Scotia 21 years old will be produced in batches of 2,500 bottles annually. It is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Bottles will be available to purchase through selected specialist whisky retailers globally and via www.glenscotia.com. Each will cost £265.

The distinctive packaging brings to life the creative development process of the films, through a behind the scenes exploration of the James Bond archives.

The whisky is the same across the six bottlings and this has been created by Kirsteen Campbell, the Master Whisky Maker at Macallan. It is bottled at 43.7% ABV. Each bottling will cost £700 each and will go on sale in selected luxury and specialist whisky retailers in the UK from February 19. Macallan The Reach Sets a New Auction Record for the World’s Oldest Whisky

An 81 year old Macallan release becomes the oldest whisky sold at auction.

The post Macallan The Reach Sets a New Auction Record for the World’s Oldest Whisky appeared first on Whisky Advocate.

A one-of-one edition of the Macallan The Reach 81 year old, the world’s oldest whisky, achieved a hammer price of £240,000/$270,487 at Sotheby’s, London in a special single lot auction on October 5th. An anonymous  UK collector made the winning bid, making this the oldest whisky ever sold at auction. It was consigned directly from the distillery, with proceeds set to benefit the Macallan Artisan Apprentice Fund.

The previous record holder for the oldest whisky sold at auction was the world’s first 80 year old whisky, Gordon & MacPhail’s Generations 80 year old distilled at Glenlivet. Aged one year less than The Reach with only 250 bottles released, its decanter No.1 was auctioned by Sotheby’s, Hong Kong on October 7, 2021, achieving a hammer price of HK$1.2 million/$154,158. The proceeds of both sales raised money for charitable causes.

So what difference did a year make? Well, $116,330 apparently; the difference in the hammer price between the world’s first 80 year old whisky and the world’s first 81 year old whisky. But why? First, the Macallan is the world’s most collectible whisky and the first and only distillery to break a million dollars for a single bottle at auction. The presentation of both whiskies feature high-end design and craftmanship, but the sculptural elements of The Reach give it greater form as artwork over the Gordon & MacPhail bottling.

This sale took place at a time when some whisky auction houses were seeing a significant rise in the number of unsold bottles at their auctions, making the result all the more remarkable. When the Gordon & MacPhail Generations 80 year old was auctioned in October 2021, it was arguably a more crowded market. The day after the Glenlivet 80 year old fetched $154,158, Sotheby’s held a successful sale of the only set of the Dalmore Decades The No. 6 Collection for a hammer price just shy of $900,000, for example.

The Macallan The Reach 81 year old, 41.6% ABV, was released in February 2022 at a price of $125,000 per bottle, having been nurtured for generations since its distillation year in 1940. Macallan released 288 bottles, each cradled by three hands cast in bronze by sculptor Saskia Robinson in a case crafted from the wood of an old elm that had fallen at the Macallan estate. The one-of-one edition sold at auction had a red leather lining for its case, while all the others were cream-colored.

This auction competitiveness between greatly aged whiskies is far from over, as some of the biggest names in scotch attempt to preserve dwindling stocks of very old liquid inside ancient casks in order to bring forth ever older whiskies. By the middle of the 21st century, we may face the prospect of seeing the world’s first whisky aged for a century, leaving us to wonder what that one will be worth?

FEW Spirits Motor Oil, The Macallan M Collection, & More [New Releases]

This week’s new releases also include Wyoming Whiskey Powder River, Alan Jackson’s Silverbelly straight bourbon, & more.

The post FEW Spirits Motor Oil, The Macallan M Collection, & More [New Releases] appeared first on Whisky Advocate.

If you plan on barbecuing this weekend, why not pair smoky food with smoky whiskey? That’s what led Tommy Brunett, founder of Iron Smoke Distillery, to make a bourbon with applewood-smoked wheat, and a handful of craft distillers around the country are likewise using woodsmoke to impart their whiskeys with distinct and sometimes regional flavor. Check out our feature on the subject and see what your local distillers are cooking up. You may just find something new worth adding to your bar.

There is a crop of new whisky out this week as well, including two rock collaborations: FEW Spirits has teamed up with rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on a new blended American whiskey, while Catoctin Creek has released a new edition of Ragnarok Rye, its collaboration with heavy metal band GWAR. On the scotch whisky front, The Macallan is launching its M Collection with three whiskies: M, M Black, and M Copper, and country singer Alan Jackson debuts his Silverbelly straight bourbon from Kentucky.
