The Ohio Department of Liquor (OHLQ) has announced the 2023 Ohio State Fair Bottle Lottery. To enter, you must visit the Ohio Department of Commerce booth in the Bricker Building to enter for a chance to win the opportunity to purchase Stagg Single Barrel or Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon.

This lottery goes from yesterday, Wednesday, July 26th at 10:00 a.m. through Sunday, August 6th at 11:59 p.m. with winners contacted on August 11th.

The Stagg comes in at a whopping 132 proof (66% alcohol) and will be available for purchase for $49.99 + tax while the Rock Hill Farms comes in at 100 proof (50% alcohol) and will be 59.99 + tax.

My Take

These are highly sought after bottles. I would definitely need to add a heavy splash of water to the Stagg with the 132 proof... Oof, that's a lot. If you're at the State Fair, there isn't a down side to entering this lottery.

How much do you know about the mash bills from Buffalo Trace Distillery. On this week’s episode and in this Article we will explore the buffalo trace mash bills from the fan favorite distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky and introduce you to some unknown information.

Buffalo Trace has two primary mash bills along with their rye whiskey mash bill and their wheated bourbon mash bill all of which they don’t disclose the recipe. Mash bill #1 is most likely 10% or less rye while mash bill #2 is somewhere between 10% to 12%.. The wheat mash bill is thought to be over 15% wheat, while the rye whiskey mash bill is thought to be just 51% rye. There is the EH Taylor Straight rye that is assumed to have a high percentage of rye.

Wait there is even more to let you know about the monster distillery. The Abraham Bowman Distillery in Virginia is a blend of the #1 and #2 mash bills that is shipped to Virginia where it is redistilled and aged in Virginia. If you will see the whiskey mold covering almost everything around the small distillery.. There are also other mash bills that you will be familiar with but might not have had the chance to taste such as, Buffalo Trace Four Grain mash bill and  Buffalo Trace Amaranth mash bill.  One last fact that we need to cover about the mash bills of Buffalo Trace is Ancient Age.

Ancient Age is another slightly confusing brand made by Buffalo Trace, but not owned by it. The ultra-affordable brand is another holdover from the Age International days, only Ancient Age keeps much of its juice in the US but we bet you didn’t know that AGE International is  a subsidiary of Takara Shuzo Co. Oh did I just give you the correct answer to our giveaway? I think I did. So I would call the #2 mash bill their contract distilled mash bill.

So with that you know what I like to say. Grab that glass, a bottle from your favorite Buffalo Trace mash bill. Listen as Jim and I walk you down The Bourbon Road sipping on 8 of these delicious whiskeys while we explore the Buffalo Trace mash bills. Cheers

Tasting Notes

WROCK HILL FARMS BOURBON BARREL
The nose presents hints of plums, candy, and papaya, and the medium body bears a simple palate with a touch of fruit, tobacco, and a pleasant minty backdrop.”

MISTER SAM TRIBUTE WHISKEY
Nose: Cigar box, pipe tobacco, Madeira cake, toffee in that order of ascent, but then there’s a rush of oaky vanilla, limestone, flint and sweetened breakfast cereal. Hearty but elegant, woody but grainy, and floral yet spicy, quite an achievement.
Taste: Full bodied; oily; viscous
Finish: The aftertaste merely underscores all the attributes and virtues identified in the aroma, entry, and mid-palate, bringing them into a grand finale that’s hugely satisfying.

OLD FITZGERALD BIB 8 YR DECANTER
This 8-year-old Spring release is smooth and complex with notes of toasted bread, walnuts, and oatmeal, with hints of clove spices and oak on the finish.

OLD FITZGERALD 13 YR BIB DECANTER
This 13-year-old spring release is rich and complex with notes of toffee, toasted oak and spice, and a lingering honeyed finish.

PARKER'S HERITAGE COLLECTION 10 YR HEAVY CHAR
Aged in Rickhouse Y and bottled at 120 proof, this Edition was able to penetrate deeper into the wood with the higher char level extracting a slight smokiness with tasting notes of smoked wood, maple and caramel sweetness.

The OHLQ had a similar lottery last year... below is the breakdown of entries, bottles available, and your overall odds of winning.

My Take

This lottery isn't super exciting to me. I haven't had experience with any of these brands so I don't really have much interest or advice on this lottery. The Old Fitzgerald 8 seems intriguing... if for no other reason than it comes in a really nice bottle. The rest seem kind of 'meh to me...
