Springbank 15 Years Review

In fact, they do as much of the process as possible on the distillery grounds. From Malting to bottling they do it all in-house. The only thing they don’t do is grow and harvest the barley themselves. Though they get incredibly close to that process in the local barley series.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

“Like a storm gathering off the Kintyre coast, our 15 year old Springbank is dark and ominous, but delicious. Best enjoyed after dinner or with your favourite cigar, this is a true classic.” – Springbank

Springbank 15 Years Tasting Notes

EYE
Ruddy copper

NOSE
Leathery-dried dark fruit, Honey Nut Cheerios, freeze-dried strawberries, cocoa, malt, and some notes of banana Quik and that signature “Spingbank funk”.

It’s dark, it’s sweet and comes through multi-faceted and balanced.

PALATE
Leathery-dried dark fruit, malty graham, cocoa, smoke, roasted nuts, x-mas cake, and a bit of candied citrus and Springbank funk.

Strong earthiness runs through it, perfectly balancing out the sweeter aspects of it.

FINISH
Long -> Dried dark fruit, leather, and cocoa fades to graham and smoke.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well-balanced, med-full body, warm velvety feel.

Springbank 15 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

The way the dark earthy notes play with the sweeter notes and get punctuated by the smoke and brighter notes (citrus and spice) makes me happy. Hands down it’s my favorite of the core, at least in the “afforable” range that is. The 18, 21 and 25 ain’t exactly slouches, they’re just well beyond my price range.

This whisky has always bordered on a 4.5/A-/90 for me. It’s full, it’s complex and multi-faceted, it’s just a delight all around. The only thing it’s missing is a bit more depth. I imagine if they released the Springbank 15 Years at CS instead of the 12 it would be a dangerously good, stunner of a whisky and fans might not want to drink anything else. And maybe that’s why they don’t do it. Who knows.

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)

Knob Creek 15 Years 2022 Review

Seriously? I mean I didn’t. I didn’t expect a well-matured, carefully selected bourbon to be garbage. I expected it to be ok at worst, but this 2022 release keeps pace with the 2021 without losing a step and continues to prove that older, non-chill filtered, Jim Beam is truly tasty bourbon.

Let’s get to drinkin’!

Knob Creek 15 Years 2022 Tasting Notes

EYE
Mahogany

NOSE
Oak, dried dark fruit, toasted graham, roasted nuts, leather, vanilla frosting, citrus peels, cocoa and a touch of menthol.

This is a mouth-watering aroma, it’s heavy and rich and… damn.

PALATE
Oak, dried dark fruit, leather, cocoa, toasted marshmallows, nuts, baking spice, and citrus peels.

Palate is a bit muted compared to the aroma, it’s not quite as rich and full, but it’s also not bad. Quite good in fact.

FINISH
Long -> Oak and cocoa fade to leather and baking spice.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well-balanced, med-full body and a velvety feel.

Knob Creek 15 Years 2022 – Overall Thoughts and Score

This is good. If they keep up these amazing yearly releases, it could supplant Booker’s as my favorite “available” Jim Beam product. And yes, I know, available is a loaded word these days. That’s why it’s in quotes.

As of right now this beats most of the Booker’s releases in the last couple of years and the reason it hasn’t already beat out Booker’s is consistency. I have a decade and a half of love for Booker’s and that’s a hard thing to beat out with just a few releases. But another two or three releases like this, with a proven track record of being consistently good and will take the cake.

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)

This Glenmorangie 15 Years hails from the early 2000s. Back in ye olden days, when they had a regular/standard looking bottle, it was part of their core range, but unlike their current mode of operation, I don’t exactly know what “extra aging” means pre-LVMH.

Glenmorangie 15 Years Review

Today, almost everything Glenmo does starts out as The Original Glenmorangie 10 and then gets a 2+ year finishing and gets labeled as “extra matured”, but I don’t know if that was the case back then. I assume it would because the standard Glenmo was also 10 years back then, but they don’t give extra details, so your guess is as good as mine.

Was it aged for 10 years in ex-Bourbon and then spent 5 years in new charred oak? Was it 13 years in ex-B and 2 years in NCO? Was it only 6 months in NCO? Who knows, but maybe we can get some semblance of an idea once we dive in.

Let’s get to drinkin’.

Glenmorangie 15 Years Tasting Notes

EYE
Amber

NOSE
Roasted malt, honied graham, dried fruit, oak, roasted nuts, brown sugar, baking spice and touches of citrus peels and vanilla.

I love the aroma of this Glenmorangie 15 Years, I need a candle or something that smells like this.

PALATE
Roasted nuts, grilled fruit, manuka honey, dried orchard fruit, toffee, cinnamon heavy baking spice, oak, vanilla and a slight herbal note.

This is a richer, amped-up, version of the old 10 with a deeper oak profile.

FINISH
Long -> Dried orchard fruit, graham, honey and oak fade out to a graham cracker sweet char.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Great balance, full body and a slightly dry but soft feel.

Glenmorangie 15 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

Dear Glenmorangie, please bring this whisky back. It’s warmly oaky, deeply fruity and elegantly spicy in a way that just doesn’t exist in the world of Scotch today. There is a Glenmorangie 15 Years shaped hole on our whisky shelves and only Dr. Bill has the power to fix that.

Seriously… this is awesome and the way it opens after a few minutes, and a few drops of water to speed things up, is incredible. This is the kind of dynamic whisky I’m looking for. The kind I want to sip on daily and would enjoy from now till I can no longer lift a glass. Bring it back Glenmo!

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)

Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15 Years is the standard ex-Bourbon Glenmo aged for 50% longer and made entirely from barley grown on Glenmorangie’s Cadboll Estate farm. So really, not exactly like the GO10 except for being an ex-Bourbon spirit. This particular release is batch 2 which was released in 2020 and only available in North America and Mexico. If you’re familiar with the original GTR Cadboll don’t draw any immediate comparisons, they’re quite different whiskies.

Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15 Years Review

The global travel retail version was a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Wine (Muscat and Sémillion) casks and drew its name from the Cadboll cup. A Scottish artifact that combines French and Scottish design aesthetics and themes. I was able to try the NAS GTR version at an SCWC tasting so I’m looking forward to comparing this with my notes on that despite them being so different.

That same tasting, FYI, is where I got the samples of all of the Private Editions we’ll be running through soon. It was one of several Glenmo mega-tastings we did as a group which is how I was able to put together a good chunk of this Glenmo mega-vertical we’re running through now. So a big thanks to Travis and Michael for making the next couple of weeks possible.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’, dig into this review and find out if this was a good purchase or not.

Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15 Years Tasting Notes

EYE
Light honey

NOSE
Honey, malt, vanilla cake, orchard fruit, banana pudding, caramel, Nilla Wafers and a touch of nuts and nutmeg.

That is one heck of a nice aroma. Warm and inviting, I could sniff it for hours.

PALATE
Vanilla cake, banana pudding, nutmeg, honey graham, dried fruit, roasted nuts, light baking spice, malt and frosting sweetness.

The aroma was nice, but the palate is the STAR. This is quite delicious.

FINISH
Medium -> Banana pudding, honey graham and spice fade evenly.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Great balance, med-full body and a lightly oily warm feel.

Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

At the SCWC tasting where we spent some time with the GTR Cadboll I enjoyed it, but it didn’t really stick out that much and the wine finish felt a little underwhelming. There wasn’t anything super remarkable about it, but it also had nothing inherently wrong with it either. It was decent. Yes the GTR and this 15 yo Cadboll are very different whiskies, but since they share the same name, I feel the need to say I’d pick this over the GTR any day. This is good.

So good, I’m considering picking up another bottle. I don’t know how long the Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15 Years is going to be around for, it’s a Limited Edition that Glenmo doesn’t even have listed on their site, so who knows if a batch 3 will be coming. And if it does there’s no guarantee it will be this good. But then again, it could be even better…

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)

I’ve been an Old Pulteney fan fora long time and I’m quite excited to get to sit down and review the Old Pulteney 15 Years today. Like many distilleries Old Pulteney shifted to making “named” NAS whiskies a couple years ago and like related offerings from other brands… they sucked.

Old Pulteney 15 Years Review

They didn’t have the life, the character or the richness of OP’s age-stated whiskies. The OP Navigator was piss-poor compared to the standard Old Pulteney 12 years and the OP Clipper was a weak shade next to the always amazing Old Pulteney 17.

Unfortunately, the OP 17 has been discontinued (and the OP 21 followed soon after), but in its place, this Old Pulteney 15 Years arrived. I’m 99% sure this will beat out either of the NAS attempts listed above, so I’ll be comparing it to the whisky it replaced.

Will it be a worthy successor? Let’s get to drinkin’ and find out.

Old Pulteney 15 Years – Details and Tasting Notes

Whiskey Details

Region: Highlands, Scotland

Distiller: Old Pulteney
Mash Bill: 100% Malted Barley
Cask: ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry
Age: 15 Years
ABV: 46%

Non-Chill Filtered | Natural Color

Price: $80

“Balancing two different sides of the flavour spectrum, this single malt marries these perfectly, whilst also reflecting our coastal home and its unwavering influence.” – Old Pulteney

Tasting Notes

EYE
Honey

NOSE
Banana malted milkshake, honey graham, vanilla frosting, nuts and a light bit of baking spice and lemon peel.

Delicate, but not weak, this is a nice, relaxing, and easy aroma I can happily sit and sniff.

PALATE
Banana malted milkshake, honey graham, waxy vanilla frosting, dried orchard fruit, roasted nuts, baking spice, toffee and touches of leather and hay.

Woah. The aroma does NOT give you much insight into the palate of this Old Pulteney 15. It’s so much richer and fuller.

FINISH
Med-long -> Waxy vanilla+banana, malt, earthy hay and graham fade to honied grahams.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well balanced, med-full body and a waxy feel.

Old Pulteney 15 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

I love Old Pulteney, it’s among my favorite distilleries and when it’s on point it’s hard to beat. A great example is that Old Pulteney Single Cask 231 from a few years back… holy freaking cow that was delicious. I wish I had another bottle in the bunker because that’s a whisky I definitely wish I could continue revisiting in the future… and this is somewhat in that vein.

It’s not quite as good as the old 17 yo it replaced, but it is a worthy addition to the line. It has a warm waxy character that keeps drawing me in and I find myself reaching for the Old Pulteney 15 and wanting the experience of drinking it. This is the bare minimum of what all Old Pulteney should be.

SCORE: 3.5/5

Old Pulteney 15 Years Label

This is a warm, waxy, malt with a nice array of flavors that make this something you want to go back to over and over. A darn fine malt indeed.
