Here is the round-up of the news from this last week.

________

Bladnoch

The revived Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the oldest ever expression to be released under the current ownership - the Bladnoch 30 years old. The new whisky is a combination of just two casks - a first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry barrel and a first-fill ex-Moscatel cask. It has been created by Dr. Nick Savage, the Master Distiller at Bladnoch.

The Bladnoch 30 years old is bottled at 45.5% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The release is limited to just 950 bottles with each costing £1,000 ($1,230 US). It will be available from www.bladnoch.com and the distillery shop, plus selected specialist retailers in selected world markets.

Macallan

The Speyside distillery of Macallan has announced their latest series - The Macallan M Collection 2022 Releases. The collection is designed to show the foundations of Macallan's whisky making, which are known as The Six Pillars, and consists of three new whiskies - the Macallan M, M Black and M Copper. All are presented in bespoke decanters created by the famous French crystal manufacturer Lalique.

Macallan M celebrates the whisky's natural colour and is bottled at 45% ABV.  M Black features rare peated spirit that is occasionally made at the distillery and is released at 46% ABV. M Copper showcases the small stills and is bottled at 42% ABV. All have been matured in sherry seasoned oak barrels and will be available in limited numbers via selected whisky and luxury retailers worldwide. The Macallan M will cost £5,000 ($6,150 US) a bottle, M Black £5,700 ($7,000 US) and M Copper £6,250 ($7,700 US).

Redbreast
The popular Irish single pot still brand of Redbreast has announced a new series of whiskeys, and the first release in that series. The Redbreast American Oak Series will be exclusive to the United States and kicks off with the Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition. The new range will celebrate the integral role that American oak barrels play in the creation of the Redbreast range.

The Kentucky Oak Edition has been initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso sherry butts from Spain. The whiskey was then finished for between three and seven months in specially created virgin American white oak casks. The Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is available now in America and will retail for $96 a bottle.

White Peak
The craft English whisky distillery of White Peak has announced the second release of their Wire Works single malt - the Wire Works Small Batch. It follows their inaugural release in February. The new whisky is a vatting of American oak ex-bourbon casks and French oak STR (shaved, toasted and recharred) barrels. There are just 4,300 bottles and these are released at 46.2% ABV. The Wire Works Small Batch will only be available from the distillery shop in Derbyshire or via www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk. It is part of a wider release programme for 2022. A bottle will cost £60.

Largest Whisky Bottle Sold

The Great Pyramids. Stonehenge. The Empire State Building. Dolly Parton…We humans are amazed at that which is BIG.

Adding to this list of gargantuan things, a new Guinness Book of World Records has been set for the largest bottle of whisky ever sold. The name – The Intrepid. The colossal bottle is nearly 6 ft tall (5’11), holding 311 liters (414.6 of 750mls), and width twice that of the average person.

And you know what they say – it’s what’s on the inside that counts. In this case, it’s 32 year old Macallan, so a WHOLE BUNCH of the good stuff.

In the end, Intrepid sold for $1.4M via Lyon and Turnbull Auction House. Not too shab.

The winning bid fell short of the world record for the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold at auction: a bottle distilled at Macallan in 1926 that fetched $1.9 million in 2019.

The Intrepid project was created by Daniel Monk, of Fah Mai and Rosewin Holdings, in memory of his father Captain Stanley Monk (the auction day would have been his 80th birthday), and inspired by his passion for adventure, exploration and a desire to help raise money for several charities.

The team named The Intrepid to celebrate the drive and record-breaking achievements of 11 of the world’s most pioneering explorers who are featured on the bottle. These include such luminaries as Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dr. Geoff Wilson, Karen Darke MBE, Olly Hicks, Sarah Outen MBE, Dwayne Fields FRGS, Levison Wood FRGS, Felicity Aston MBE and past Scottish Adventurers of the Year Jamie Ramsay and Will Copestake.

Founder of The Intrepid Project, Daniel Monk, said: “For me and the whole team The Intrepid project has always been about more than money. This is a passion project to celebrate the life of my late father, Captain Stanley Monk who was himself an explorer and achieved many amazing things during his life. Today would have been his birthday so it was a perfect date to put The Intrepid up for auction.”

The project is supporting the explorers’ chosen environmental, physical and mental well-being charities. These include Marie Curie, selected by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), chosen by Jamie Ramsay.

The founders of The Intrepid project felt it was important to make the auction accessible to collectors at all levels and created a small number of exclusive bottle sets and miniatures as part of the lots on offer at Lyon & Turnbull. These comprised a collection of 12 smaller 50 cl bottles (~17oz), each filled with the remaining 32-year-old.

The Macallan whisky from the same casks used to fill the record-breaking bottle. Each set included a replica of the main bottle design along with individual bottles dedicated to each of the explorers associated with the project.

The Macallan Distil Your World New York, Rossville Union Barrel Proof (2022 Release), & More [New Releases]

This week includes new releases from Catoctin Creek, J.W. Kelly, 15 Stars, Flying Tumbler, & New Holland.

The post The Macallan Distil Your World New York, Rossville Union Barrel Proof (2022 Release), & More [New Releases] appeared first on Whisky Advocate.

When assembling your bar, don’t neglect non-whisky spirits if not for your own enjoyment than for that of your guests. With more barrel-aged gins, tequilas, rums, cognacs, and wines to choose from, it’s never been easier to branch out and add some diversity to your home setup. We explored the many ways that bourbon barrels are giving other spirits new dimensions and recommend a few bottles to seek out.

Naturally, there’s plenty of new whisky to target as well, with releases this week hailing from Scotland and the U.S. The Macallan adds a New York-inspired single malt to its Distil the World collection; Ross & Squibb Distillery unveils the latest Rossville Union Barrel Proof rye, now bearing an age statement; and Catoctin Creek has a high-proof rye of its own with Roundstone Rye Cask Strength finished in hickory syrup barrels. Read on for full details.

Ah, Macallan. I just want to ask…why?

Oh, yeah. The money.

How ’bout we just move on to some notes. This feels lazy, but it’s just really unremarkable (though, not, to be clear, flawed) whisky.

Sherry-seasoned European and American Oak. 44% abv.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Very clean, actually. Some typical (and kinda boring, I realize) fruitcake. The kind with the marzipan toupee. Gramma’s raisin butter tarts. Some sort of reduced cherry, stripped of the zip, and a bit muddled. A touch of potting soil. A little orange and vanilla too. Cacao? Hmmm…you sure? Palate: Like sucking on a dead cinnamon stick. Think and somewhat vinous. A pronounced lack of texture (can something be pronounced and lacking?). Very spice forward. Rum raisin. maybe a bit of marmalade. Brown butter and spiced honey. Kinda boozy. Finish: A fairly dead, innocuous finish. 79/100

Here is the round-up of the news from this last week ...

________

Amrut
The Indian single malt distillery of Amrut has revealed details of the second batch release of its Spectrum 004 whisky.  The whiskies used to create Spectrum 004 have undergone a unique journey that began in standard ex-bourbon barrels for initial maturation. The liquid was then transferred to Amrut's custom-built Spectrum casks, which are constructed using staves from four different types of oak barrel - highly charred American oak, toasted French oak, ex-Oloroso sherry and ex-Pedro Ximenez. The first release won multiple awards around the world.

Amrut Spectrum 004 Batch 2 is bottled at 50% ABV. There are just 6,000 bottles and they will be available in selected world markets including Australia, the UK and USA. Details of price were not given in the press release.

Benromach
The independently-owned Speyside distillery of Benromach has announced a new limited edition whisky into their experimental Contrasts range - the Benromach Cara Gold. The whisky has been made using Cara Gold barley, which is more commonly used in the beer industry and rarely for Scotch whisky. The spirit was distilled and filled to first-fill ex-bourbon barrels in 2010 and bottled in 2022. These were then selected and married together by Keith Cruikshank, the Distillery Manager at Benromach, and his team. It is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour.

The Benromach Cara Gold will be available from www.benromach.com and selected specialist retailers worldwide. There are just 6,000 bottles. Each will cost £50/ $68 US.

"We love getting creative with our small batch expressions and our Contrasts Range allows us to do this. Unlike any of our other expressions, we have used Cara Gold, a type of malted barley normally found in a brewery rather than a distillery. It has produced a beautiful and unique single malt."
Keith Cruickshank.

Lum Reek
The smoky blended malt brand of Lum Reek has announced the inaugural limited edition batch of a new expression - the Lum Reek 10 years old Cask Strength Batch1. The new whisky has been curated by Billy Walker, the Master Blender of brand owners MacNair's Boutique House of Spirits. He has combined single malts from Islay and Speyside, including Walker's own Glenallachie distillery. The whiskies blended together at 10 years of age before undergoing a final maturation in a combination of ex-sherry, ex-red wine and virgin oak casks.

The Lum Reek 10 years old Cask Strength Batch 1 is bottled at 55.4% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will be available via selected specialist retailers globally and will cost £60/ $82 US. The exact number of bottles was not revealed in the press release.

Macallan
The famous Speyside distillery of Macallan has revealed its oldest ever single malt bottling - The Reach 81 years old. The whisky was distilled and filled to an ex-sherry cask during World War II in 1940. This cask was then selected by Kirsteen Campbell, the current Master Whisky Maker at Macallan. The whisky is presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter that sits within a bespoke bronze sculpture of three hands created by Saskia Robinson. One hand represents the distillery worker from 1940 who filled the cask, one for ex-chairman Allan Shiach and one for Campbell. The decanter and sculpture is housed within a handmade wooden cabinet made with fallen elm trees from the Macallan's Easter Elchies Estate.

The Macallan The Reach 81 years old is bottled at 41.6% ABV and will be available in selected specialist whisky and luxury retailers in selected world markets, plus The Macallan Boutiques in airports. There are just 288 bottles. Each will retail for £92,000/ $125,000 US.

Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao, Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 8 & More [New Releases]

Plus, a Redemption bourbon finished in cognac casks, the fourth iteration of Paul John’s Christmas whisky, and more.

The post Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao, Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 8 & More [New Releases] appeared first on Whisky Advocate.

Plenty of us have favorites when it comes to whisky; perhaps you’re loyal to bourbon, or rarely stray from single malt scotch. But there’s a whole world of whisky out there, ripe for the taking, and if ever you’re in the mood for exploration consider one of the more esoteric offerings we highlight here, such as Japanese rice whisky or grain whiskies.

On to the new releases. This week, there are new single malts from Macallan, Balvenie, Paul John, and Penderyn, as well as a host of bourbons up for grabs. Read on for full details.

The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection 2021 Releases, a Macallan to Celebrate the New Year & More [New Whiskies]

Plus, an ice wine-finished Irish whiskey from Writers’ Tears and a cognac-finished straight bourbon from TX.

The post The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection 2021 Releases, a Macallan to Celebrate the New Year & More [New Whiskies] appeared first on Whisky Advocate.

Special release season continues this week. We recently reported some other fall limited releases, like the Diageo Special Releases and Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition, and we have an upcoming look at the new edition of Octomore. Now comes the announcement of this year’s Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC)—and the notable detail that there is no George T. Stagg in the lineup, because the barrels for the 15 year old barrel proof bourbon did not meet the distillery’s standards this year.

See the full details below on this year’s four BTAC whiskeys, along with some other goodies such as a no-age statement Macallan that celebrates the new year, a Writers’ Tears Irish whiskey with an ice wine finish, and a cognac-finished bourbon from Firestone & Robertson’s TX label.

________

Big Peat
The blended malt brand of Big Peat, owned by Douglas Laing & Co, has revealed details of its annual Christmas bottling. As with all expressions of Big Peat, the whisky consists of only single malts from the famous whisky island of Islay. The Big Peat Christmas 2021 Edition is bottled at the cask strength of 52.8% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. No details of the numbers within the limited edition or the price were given in the press release. It will be available from the end of September via www.douglaslaing.com and specialist whisky retailers worldwide including Asia, Europe and North America.

Bushmills

The Irish single malt distillery of Bushmills has announced the 2021 line-up for its annual Causeway Collection. This years selection, which is named after the Giant's Causeway that is located close to the distillery, features 12 whiskeys. The youngest is bottled at nine years of age (the 2011 Sauternes Cask Finish, pictured, above left) and the oldest at 32 years old (the Port Cask, one of the oldest ever releases from Bushmills).

Other highlights include two Marsala Cask Finishes from 1991 and 1995, another Port Cask Finish from 2000 and a Jupille Cask Finish from 2008 featuring a cask from the famous Belgian brewery. The 12 whiskeys will be spread across eight world markets - Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Scandanavia, UK and travel retail. All are non chill-filtered with prices ranging from €55/ £47 to €950/ £815 per bottle.

"The Causeway Collection celebrates our extremely rare and unique cask finishes, our passion for single malt and honours our rich heritage. It is a privilege to work with such rare liquid, these special cask-finished whiskeys really are our greatest treasures."
Colum Egan / Master Distiller at Bushmills.

Glenmorangie

The north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie has revealed a limited edition collaboration with botanical sculptor Azuma Makato. Special packaging for the brand's 18 years old expression has been designed by Makato to celebrate the unveiling of his Dancing Flowers of Glenmorangie sculpture at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London. The artwork is inspired by the delicate floral aromas and flavours of Glenmorangie 18 years old and consists of 100 blooms from both Scotland and his homeland of Japan, some of which are scented with the whisky.

The Glenmorangie 18 years old Azuma Makato Edition is bottled at 43% ABV and will be available from specialist whisky and luxury retailers globally, Amazon and www.clos19.com from November 1. A bottle will cost £100/ $137 US.

"Azuma Makoto’s stunning work deliciously translates the sweet, floral lushness of Glenmorangie 18 years old. A mere glimpse of his limited-edition design brings to mind the whisky’s scents of geranium, rose and jasmine, plus tastes of honeysuckle and sweet pea."
Dr. Bill Lumsden / Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie.

Macallan
The famous Speyside distillery of Macallan has announced the oldest expression yet for its Double Cask range - the Macallan Double Cask 30 years old. The new whisky has seen maturation for three decades in sherry seasoned American and European oak casks. These have then been married together by Kirsteen Campbell, the Master Whisky Maker at Macallan. The Macallan Double Cask 30 years old is bottled at 43% ABV and is presented in an oak casket. It will be available from specialist whisky and luxury retailers, plus Macallan Boutiques globally. Each bottle will cost £2,950/ $4,000 US.

Redbreast
The Irish whiskey brand of Redbreast have announced a new limited edition expression that will slot into a newly created range. The Redbreast Pedro Ximénez Edition will join the Iberian Series of Redbreast single pot still whiskeys. The Lustau Edition, which was first launched back in 2016, will also join to become the cornerstone of the series.

For this PX Edition the triple distilled Redbreast spirit has been initially matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. These whiskeys were then re-casked to hogshead barrels that had been seasoned with Pedro Ximénez, a sweet dessert style of sherry. It is bottled at 46% ABV and will be available initially in Ireland. Other markets including Finland, travel retail and the UK will follow shortly after with America following in November. A bottle will cost €80/ £72/ $86 US.

"Iberia has been central to the history of Redbreast. My colleagues and I have been visiting the peninsula since the 1980s. The close relationships fostered there over decades have led to many delightful discoveries that take the region’s influence on our whiskey to another level."
Billy Leighton / Master Blender for Redbreast.

In a month where we’re all rediscovering our love of lolling about with friends in beer gardens, we wanted to highlight some of the places where you can also sip a dram or two in the sunshine. With terraces that range from super swanky to the cosy and curbside, these bars all have something great to offer whisky lovers – just make sure you get your booking in quick.

Solas at The Savoy Court

If you’re a fan of Bowmore, the new pop-up bar at the Savoy Hotel might be the perfect place to treat yourself to a decadent dram. Named Solas after the Gaelic for ‘light, joy and comfort’ – and who doesn’t need some of that right now? – the bar is designed to be a feast for the senses: illuminated by a huge chandelier from which decanters, stoppers and crystal shards are suspended, it offers a mixture of specially-designed whisky cocktails, a range of Bowmore single malts that includes the 27-year-old Timeless series, and a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood. The three words you never knew you needed in your life? Bowmore oyster luge.

Solas is open Monday-Thursday, 4pm-10pm & Friday-Sunday, 12pm-10pm at the Savoy, WC2R 0EZ.

BOISDALE BELGRAVIA

A firm favourite with those of us who enjoy the ‘occasional’ whisky and cigar, Boisdale’s generously-sized terrace is equipped with heaters and snuggly blankets, making it a comfortable option whatever the weather. It’s currently serving both drinks and food, with some seriously tempting happy hour offers available too. If you’re a City type, their splendid Canary Wharf venue also has a large terrace with the same offering.

Boisdale Belgravia is open every day, 5pm-11pm Monday, 12pm-11pm Tuesday-Friday, 5pm-11pm Saturday and 12pm-4pm Sunday. SW1W 9LX

BAR SWIFT

Not only are Bar Swift still delivering chilled, freshly-made cocktails to nearby local parks on the weekends, but their outdoor seating area is now open in Soho for both bookings and walk-ins. Sip one of their fabulous cocktails while you browse their 300-strong whisky list and wonder how you’re ever going to be able to make a decision.

Bar Swift is open from 5pm Monday – Friday and from 12pm on Saturday and Sunday. W1D 4TQ.

THe Macallan manor house

The Macallan Manor House at Rosewood London. Copyright John Carey

The yin to Solas’ peaty yang is perhaps the Macallan Manor House at the Rosewood London hotel. This pretty, floral terrace is decorated with heather, tartan rugs and fishing-themed accessories to fool you into thinking you’re lounging by the river Spey rather than somewhat near the river Fleet. The boathouse-themed terrace serves the full Macallan core range plus some rarer drams (London Edition, anyone?), alongside food and a wide range of other drinks. Close your eyes and you’ll almost hear the salmon leaping…

The Macallan Manor House is open Monday – Saturday 12pm-10pm, and Sunday, 12pm-9.30pm. WC1V 7EN

MILROY’S, SOHO & SPITALFIELDS

As anyone who’s been there knows, both branches of Milroy’s serve an unbeatable range of whiskies, including a vast range of indie bottlings, and both only have a tiny amount of outdoor space. The Soho branch, for example, only has four seats available, and neither venue accepts advance bookings. Go early, and use your elbows if necessary.

The Milroy’s Soho terrace is open Tuesday-Saturday, 3pm-11pm. W1D 4NX

The Milroy’s Spitalfields terrace is open Wednesday-Saturday, 12pm-8pm. E1 6LY

SALT

Based near Marble Arch, Salt offers an appealing combination of really tasty Indian food and a menu that boasts several hundred whiskies. Their roadside outdoor space was popular long before Covid and booking is essential.

Salt is open from 12pm Monday – Sunday. W2 2JB
