{Louisville, KY} Barrels & Billets, Hillerich & Bradsby Co.’s (H&B) unique experience where guests blend, create and bottle their very own bourbon, is now an official member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, run by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

Located at H&B’s downtown Louisville campus at 8th & Main Street, the bourbon experiences enjoyed by locals and tourists alike opened in February 2022 and has seen more than 13,000 guests in its first year.

More than just a tasting, guests at Barrels & Billets blend with six award-winning WoodCraft finished bourbons including a 200 Year Oak, European Oak, American Oak, Cherry Wood, Maple Wood, and Smoked Oak. During the experience, guests learn the art of bourbon blending before the chance to test their skill at blending to their own preferred flavor profile. Once the blending experience is complete, guests are able to have their unique recipe bottled onsite in a personalized, commemorative package.

“The entire Barrels & Billets team is ecstatic to join KDA and play a role in such an incredible Kentucky industry,” said Patrick Shortridge, Director of Guest Experience at Hillerich & Bradsby Co. “This is a big milestone for us and we look forward to building onto Barrels & Billets’ fun and unique take on what people can experience in downtown bourbon.”

“Home Plate Series” Bourbons Celebrate Baseball Heritage

barrels

Along with the position on the bourbon trail, Barrels & Billets will also release a suite of three new bourbons. The Home Plate Series featuring baseball iconography includes Lucky Lumber Easy Drinking BourbonLead Off Rich & Complex Bourbon and Smokin’ Fastball Smoked Bourbon. Available exclusively in the Barrels & Billets shop, each bourbon is offered for a retail price of $40 and is presented at 90 proof/45% ABV.

  • Lucky Lumber shows a lithe and lively bouquet of Bing cherry, dried flower, white chocolate, and raw honey. On the palate, sweet maple flavors arise with notes of baked molasses and a lingering impression of ripe berry fruit.
  • Lead Off offers a bold yet inviting nose that carries hints of freshly baked snickerdoodles, cigar smoke, and saddle leather. It’s remarkably soft on the palate from start to finish, bringing flavors of stewed maraschino cherries, baked orchard fruit, and candied pecans before clove spice kiss the finish.
  • Smokin’ Fastball’s complex nose showcases a medley of young leather and cigar box aromas with muddled orange peel and bran muffin. Comforting flavors of ripe stone fruit, baked apricots, and vanilla custard come through, rounding out and creating a pleasingly smooth profile that lingers through a smooth finish.

“We entered the tourism and entertainment industry more than 25 years ago when we opened the doors of Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory right here on West Main,” said John Hillerich, President & CEO of Hillerich & Bradsby Co. “We’re excited to join KDA with a one-of-a-kind, fun experience that not only adds to the excitement of historic Main Street, but also complements Louisville’s flourishing bourbon tourism industry. ”

Barrels & Billets is one of 3 venues at H&B’s campus located at 800 W Main St. in downtown Louisville, including the award-winning Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and The Skybox, a 5,000 sq. ft. event space.

FOR TICKETS: Tickets are available at BarrelsAndBillets.com. Custom bourbon experiences are offered for $35 per person and custom blend 750ml bottles can be purchased for $50. Guests can also try the Flight School experience where they can sample 3 bourbons and 3 different cocktails crafted with the Home Plate Series bourbons.

A variety of Barrels & Billets bourbons are available exclusively at the attraction, including its premium bourbon J. Frederick, created in honor of J. Frederick Hillerich who immigrated to America from Germany on October 7, 1842 as a woodworker and made barrels for the burgeoning whiskey business.

The collapse of Washington’s Skagit Valley Malting last month left distillers and brewers alike searching for new suppliers of malted barley. The craft maltster had more than 270 customers when it closed unexpectedly, including Seattle’s Westland and Copperworks distilleries. We’ll talk with Copperworks co-founders Jason Perkins and Jeff Kanof this week on WhiskyCast In-Depth, along with Kate Bernot, who’s been covering the story for Good Beer Hunting. In the news, the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame gets eight new inductees, while Woodford Reserve is teaming up with Kentucky farmers to develop the state as a rye-producing region. We’ll have all the week’s whisky news, tasting notes for whiskies from the U.S., Japan, and India, and much more on this week’s WhiskyCast.

Eight New Members of Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame Announced

Eight people will join the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame this September, including Dr. Jerry Dalton, the subject of an online video titled “Get Jerry Dalton in the Hall of Fame.” The honorees also include a women’s rights activist who successfully fought a Kentucky state law banning women from bars, former Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, and the father-and-son team who created Jefferson’s Bourbon.

This year’s inductees in alphabetical order:

Dr. Jerry Dalton spent 22 years in the Bourbon industry, and finished his career as Jim Beam’s master distiller succeeding Booker Noe before retiring early to take care of his wife.

Dixie Sherman Demuth owned Dixie’s Elbow Room in the 1950’s, and persuaded the Kentucky Supreme Court to overturn a 200-year-old state law banning women from working or drinking in public bars.

Greg Fischer is the former three-term mayor of Louisville, and worked tirelessly to promote Bourbon-related tourism in the city.

Pete Kamer spent 45 years in the industry before retiring and creating Distillery Engineering, a consulting firm that has helped numerous craft distillers get off the ground.

Joe Magliocco is the president and CEO of Michter’s Distillery, and helped lead the Whiskey Row renaissance in downtown Louisville with the development of the Michter’s micro-distillery and visitors center on Main Street.

Dean Watts is the former judge-executive of Nelson County, home to Bardstown and its growing number of distilleries.

Chet Zoeller is an author, historian, and co-founder of Jefferson’s Bourbon. After years of research, he wrote the book Bourbon in Kentucky, a comprehensive history of nearly 1,000 distillers and brands in the state’s history.

Trey Zoeller is Chet’s son, and co-founded Jefferson’s Bourbon with his father in 1997.

The induction ceremony will be held in September in conjunction with the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. Honorees are nominated by Kentucky Distillers Association member companies and the Bourbon Festival board, then reviewed by the KDA Board of Directors and a blue-ribbon panel of Hall of Fame members.

The spring edition of Old Fitzgerald was a surprising 17 years old.  People went nuts.  Then Heaven Hill followed it up with a 19-year old release and enthusiasts clamored for it like no Old Fitzgerald before.  For the smart few who open their bottle, will it be worth the $240 price tag?  Plus, now with two extra-aged releases, are the days of 8 and 9-year Old Fitzgerald a thing of the past?  Heaven Hill certainly keeps us on our toes for each Spring and Fall release.

Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Fall 2022
Bourbon:        Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Decanter Series
Edition:          Fall 2022
Distillery:        Heaven Hill
Age:                19 years
ABV:              50% (100 proof)
Cost:               $240.00

Tasting Notes

Appearance:
Copper penny with a red hue.

Nose:
I expected more oak with the gaudy age statement.  It’s still deep with mature oak and leather, but it’s also nutty with butterscotch candy sweetness, rounded out with black tea and a heady, nectarous honeysuckle.

Taste:
The balance is remarkable.  With a creamy, buttery texture, the spicy oak coats your mouth as it shifts to vanilla, toffee, and pralines, and then turns back to oak with the full array of baking spices.

Finish:
The finish has a gear shift that I love, but at first, I mistook it as a short, flat finish.  After a quick burst it faded but then it rebounded with sustained warmth.  It’s oak-driven and dry, still with a touch of cocoa as it fades.

Bottom Line
Pair this with the Spring 2022 release of Old Fitzgerald and you have two of the top ten bourbons of the year, easily.  These are remarkable bourbons and strong buys.

without any strings attached.
Thank you.

The 28th episode of the Bourbon & Banter podcast – Jack Bourbon? - is now available for your listening and drinking pleasure. As you can tell from the title, this podcast addresses the most often-asked question in American whiskey. Bourbon Heritage Month has come to a close, and we’re thrilled with the response we received during the best damn month of the year. We recap BHM22, and Pops wonders: “should we do the Twelve Days of Bourbon Cream in December?” Bob isn’t convinced this is worth doing, though.
