New Orphan Barrel Whiskey: Fable & Folly, Aged 14 + Years and Blend of Previous Releases

Fable and Folly Orphan Barrel Whiskey

The latest Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. release is a blend of some of the best previous releases which allows us to go back into our archives at BourbonBlog.com as we were the first to report on the release of Diageo’s Orphan Series back in 2013 in the story linked here.

The Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co tells BourbonBlog.com tells us that the  Fable & Folly Finest Quality Whiskey is Aged 14 Years. Fable & Folly was crafted from a proprietary blend that includes the last remaining stocks of Barterhouse, Forged Oak, and various Rhetoric releases.

It will be available soon in limited quantities at select spirits retailers nationwide  SRP of $149.99 for 750 mL.

Master Blender Andrew Mackay married the last remaining stocks of Barterhouse, Forged Oak and various Rhetoric releases with a proprietary blend to create the expression, which pays homage to the original releases yet possesses a distinct profile of its own.“Fable & Folly honors the quality ingredients that go into it and the ethos of the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. as a whole,” said Mackay.

We have interviewed the distillers about other Orphan Barrel releases like the one featured in the video below from our YouTube.com/Bourbonblog channel and on this link.

Mackay explains to BourbonBlog.com:

“In my discoveries of the six orphaned stocks that are part of Fable & Folly, it became clear that blending them would both highlight and enhance the nuances that make these liquids so special. Fable& Folly tells the stories of whiskeys past while exciting aficionados and collectors with a unique new spirit that stands the test of time.”Fable & Folly is a harmonious creation that uniquely balances age and flavor. This whiskey beautifully accents the rich, smooth character of the orphaned stocks within it, featuring spicy notes of rye and pepper.

>It begins with a burst of spice and delicately warms to a smooth richness with sweet notes of syrup and fruit. The spirit animal displayed on the bottle pays homage to this proprietary blend -a hybrid of the three signature animals of the whiskeys from which Fable & Folly came: a stag, a hummingbird, and a fox.”

Cigar Rye Whiskey: Buzzard’s Roost New Releases Uses Barrels Cold-smoked with Aged Kentucky Tobacco

Cigar Rye Whiskey Buzzards Roost

While we’ve seen a number of “cigar” whiskey expressions at BourbonBlog.com  which are typically whiskeys made to “pair” with cigars, Buzzard’s Roost is releasing new limited-edition rye that actually was created from a four-year-old whiskey aged in barrels that were cold-smoked with aged Kentucky tobacco leaves. Buzzard’s Roost Sipping Whiskeys are known for their experiments with unique types of barrel influences led by Founder and Master Blender Jason Brauner.

Buzzard’s Roost tells us the nose offers notes of florals and rye bread followed by a light hint of smoke and cinnamon and brown sugar. The palate is a delicate combination of candy sweetness and confectionery notes that fade mid-palate to citrus and cigar tobacco followed by a sweet and toasty finish.

At a 105 proof, this exceptional expression is made up of a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley.

Woodford Reserve 1000 Dollar Mint Julep 2022 Kentucky Derby

As BourbonBlog.com continues our coverage to the much anticipated Kentucky Derby 148, we’ve just learned all the details on the 2022 Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep.

This year the program honors the connections between Kentucky and France. This year’s $1,000 Mint Julep cocktail features ingredients found at France’s Palace of Versailles, once home to three of the country’s kings from the House of Bourbon: Kings Louis XIV to XVI. The cocktail brings together the flavors of orange, lemon, and pomegranate with Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

Handmade by Louisville-based jeweler From the Vault, the cups feature red rubies in the shape of a horseshoe. One side of the cup is engraved with a thoroughbred, representing Versailles, Kentucky, where Woodford Reserve Distillery is located and where many of the world’s best thoroughbreds are bred and raised. The other side includes a nod to Versailles, France.

Benefiting Charity

Proceeds will benefit Old Friends Farm, where famous thoroughbreds, including past Derby winners, are sent to retire peacefully. The charity was started by Mike Blowen, a retired journalist from The Boston Globe.

“The French connections to Kentucky are significant – from Versailles, the home of our distillery – to Louisville, KY, the city where the Derby is run and which was named after King Louis XVI,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris. “Cheers – or as the French would say “Sante” – to Derby 148.” Learn more about them on OldFriendsEquine.org

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Bottle 2022

As Kentucky Derby is around the corner and BourbonBlog.com will be there giving coverage, we suggest putting a Woodford Reserve Bourbon Whiskey 2022 Kentucky Derby Bottle on your bar to get ready.

And good news: this is a bigger bottle than your typical Bourbon whiskey sold in 750 ml bottles. These 1-liter Derby bottles of Woodford Reserve Bourbon are on sale across now the United States and the globe with a retail price of $49.99.

This year’s Derby bottle features the artwork of Kentucky native Jaime Corum, an equine artist known for her stunning horse portraits. Corum’s painting, titled “Dreams in Bloom,” features three thoroughbreds racing neck-and-neck, surrounded by a spray of vivid spring flowers, including the iconic red roses of Derby.

Woodford Reserve’s Derby bottle has been an annual collector’s item anticipated by bourbon and racing fans since 1999.

“The attention to detail in Jaime’s artwork is remarkable – and so realistic,” Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris tells BourbonBlog.com. “This year’s bottle celebrating the 148th Kentucky Derby will make a gorgeous addition to anyone’s bar.

Woodford Reserve tells us they have also that it has partnered with retailer Williams Sonoma to help bring a favorite Derby cocktail to parties nationwide. The Woodford Spire was introduced at the track in 2018 – and it quickly became a favorite.

As part of Woodford Reserve and Williams-Sonoma’s partnership, the Woodford Spire joins the line of co-branded cocktails mixers for sale nationwide that include the Mint Julep and Whiskey Sour. Made with cranberry and lemon, the Woodford Spire is an official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby.

“The Woodford Spire is a staple for any Kentucky Derby celebration, and this year, Williams-Sonoma is making it easier than ever to make this delicious cocktail,” said Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall.

The Art and Artist Jaime Corum

Corum’s portraiture captures the conformation and spirit of the horse in a way that’s unlike anyone else, with skill developed through years of studying art, enhanced by her personal experience with horses and the equestrian world.

She spent her formative years riding horses, painting and drawing them in her free time, and continued to focus on her equine subject after receiving her Masters of Fine Arts from The University of Kentucky.

Each equine artwork begins with the foundation of her understanding of equine conformation and movement and enhances that with the intangible quality of the horse’s character, capturing the essence of each equine subject.

About the 30 year Old Teeling

Teeling 30 Year Old Irish Single Malt Whiskey

his new Vintage Reserve bottling consists of 30-Year-Old Single Malt Irish whiskey distilled in 1991, initially matured in Bourbon casks before being given extra maturation for over 9 years in Sauternes wine casks to provide a truly unique, Irish whiskey taste experience. This distinctive and unique dual maturation imparts a significant depth of fruit flavours that perfectly balances the hint of smoke that comes from both using some Peated Malt in its production and the oak influence from over 30 years of aging.

Available globally including at the Teeling Whiskey distillery in Dublin, The Teeling 30-Year-Old Single Malt will be available for purchase for $2,199.99 in January 2022 in the US, online at Caskers.com and at fine liquor retailers in California, Nevada, Texas, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts and Florida.

This limited-edition whiskey, restricted to only 4,000 bottles globally, is hand bottled in distinctive decanter-like vessels and comes with its own certificate of authenticity. Bottled at 46% ABV with no chill filtration, which is the signature of all Teeling Whiskeys, completes an Irish Single Malt whiskey of exceptional character. The extra aging provided by 30 years in cask, and in particular from the Sauternes dessert wine influence, has evolved the distinctive fruit and savoury taste profile perfectly with the wood influence to make an extremely well balanced whiskey.

Jack Teeling, founder of the Teeling Whiskey Company, commented,

“We are extremely proud to be able to release some of the oldest ever bottlings of Irish Single Malt with our Vintage Reserve Collection. Each release has proven that Irish Whiskey can match and beat any whiskey from around the world. Our latest Teeling 30-Year-Old Single Malt is a perfect representation of everything good about Irish Whiskey – from its robust nose to its fully rounded and balanced array of flavours. We are very proud of this whiskey and we hope it can continue to help forge our reputation as a truly World Class whiskey producer.”
