Scottish malt distiller Jura has announced the inauguration of a new single malt series, Perspective No. 1.

Jura’s Whisky Maker Joe Ricketts commented, “We are particularly proud of this expression which we have quietly been developing at Jura.”

The new series has been created to excite whisky explorers and connoisseurs, with each expression showcasing natural color, non-chill-filtration and bottled at a specifically selected alcohol strength (46.5% ABV). Each bottle carries a striking geometric design of gold and black, which is unique to each bottle, meaning no two bottles are the same and in subsequent years followers of Perspectives will be able to collect a set that is unique to them.

Jura Perspective No.1 is a fresh take on the island distillery’s signature style, whilst offering whisky explorers new dimensions of flavor to enjoy. Fruity, aromatic, and coastal, Jura’s house style is ripe for exploration. The Distillery’s exceptionally tall stills provide the fruity base of the new make spirit, which is enhanced in Perspective No. 01, which has a finish in Oloroso sherry casks, and is carefully balanced by the whisky maker. This whisky is an expression to delight the whisky aficionado.

The first release in the series is a nod to an old favorite of the distillery team, Diurach’s Own. The team have taken what was loved best from the older expression and added their own stamp to create a whisky which is inspired by the whisky makers who came before, but which represents Jura’s house style today.

In 2023 The Distillery celebrated 60 years since it was reborn. Jura’s island community, at a little over 230 residents, is now thriving and with Jura Single Malt Whisky Distillery at its heart. Perspective No.1 is an invitation to discover what makes Jura special.

Jura Perspective No.1 is available in good spirits stores and stockists in UK, France and select European Markets.

Biodynamic: Cuvée Luna is the distillery’s new flagship whisky. Waterford Distillery is certified by Demeter and the Organic Trust. The whisky is made from 100% Irish barley grown using regenerative biodynamic farming techniques.

As the first certified biodynamic whisky in the world, Cuvée Luna builds upon the distillery’s regenerative farming program. The growth of chemical applications after  World War 1 led to the creation of biodynamic farming.

Using this method, animals, crops, and soil are treated holistically in one system, similar to other organic methods. The concept incorporates environmental protection procedures.

Waterford Distillery Launches a New Bottling Made From Regenerative Barley

waterford distillery

For its first bottling, Waterford partnered with three Irish biodynamic farmers – Trevor Harris, John McDonnell, and Alan Mooney. As part of its Arcadian Farm Origin series, Waterford Distillery released the world’s first biodynamic whisky in 2021. It has since expanded its intake to six biodynamic growers.

“Controversial to some, and the ultimate in regenerative farming to others, many of the world’s greatest winemakers and award-winning wines follow biodynamic methods to produce the most expressive and vibrant natural flavors possible,” said Mark Reynier, chief executive and founder of Waterford Distillery.

Nose: Green apple, hay, malted biscuits, white pepper, peaches, barnyard, cherry tomatoes, dry soil, light herbal tea, breadcrust, birch

Taste: Pepper spice, dry, breakfast cereals, chewable, lemon curd, pesto, green peppers, porridge with cream, malted biscuits, herbal tea, grapefruit

Finish: Creamy, gentle spices with dryness that turns herbal and lingers into an Irish goodbye

“Whisky has become an industrially manufactured product, propped up with additives and finishes. Barley is one of the most flavoursome cereal grains and over time, this inherent flavour has been compromised as distilleries prioritise yield.

“So, we go back to the beginning – not just whisky how it used to be, but how farming used to be, and that means taking every grain of biodynamic barley we can get our hands on.”

The Cuvée Luna is a blend of multiple biodynamic harvests aging in a blend of 37% First-fill US Oak, 17% Virgin US Oak, 25% Premium French Oak, and 21% Vin Doux Naturel casks.

Thomas Dambo's Trolls at the Bernheim Arboretum

Of course, on any vacation to Kentucky Bourbon Country, there’s going to be a visit or three to the best distilleries in Bardstown, but when it’s time for a break from sipping, heading to the Bernheim Arboretum to see the Thomas Dambo trolls is the perfect palate cleanser. These impressive outdoor art installations are located all over the world, three of which can be found in this beautiful research forest and arboretum in Clermont, KY, about 20 minutes from our bed and breakfast in Bardstown.

Thomas Dambo is a Danish artist whose work is focused on sustainability and using recycled materials in his larger-than-life sculptures. These whimsical trolls are posed in unique situations, many in forests, along riverbeds, and welcoming visitors from around the globe. The repurposed wood and other natural elements make these creatures blend in with their surroundings, and they’re a delightful addition to a walk through the Bernheim Arboretum and research forest.

As a guest at Bourbon Manor Bed and Breakfast, planning a trip out to Clermont to see the Thomas Dambo trolls will be a lovely addition to your stay. With our luxurious accommodations as your homebase, you’ll love heading out for nearby adventures and bourbon tasting, but it’s even better to return in the evenings to the classy comfort and peaceful atmosphere of our B&B. As long-time Innkeepers, you’ll be treated to unparalleled hospitality and welcomed with bright smiles. Start planning your next getaway to Kentucky and book our bed and breakfast in Bardstown today!

Find the Thomas Dambo's Trolls & Beautiful Falls Colors at Bernheim

Located in the rolling hills of Kentucky, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a lovely destination for nature lovers and offers many activities. The forest spans over 16,000 acres and provides a diverse landscape of towering trees, ponds, and open meadows, making it ideal for hiking, birdwatching, and photography.

Visitors can explore over 40 miles of trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes, all designed to immerse you in the beauty of the forest and look for the giants created by Thomas Dambo along the way.

Here are the best things to do at the Bernheim Arboretum this fall:

  1. Discover Thomas Dambo’s Forest Giants: These whimsical art installations were added in 2019 in conjunction with the 90th anniversary of the forest and arboretum. Due to the organic nature of these sculptures, they won’t be here forever, so now is the time to plan to visit if you haven’t yet! The three Thomas Dambo trolls, Mama Loumari, Little Elina, and Little Nis, will likely only be located at the park until the end of 2024. it’s an approximately 2-mile round-trip loop to see all three.
  2. Explore the Canopy Tree Walk: There’s a short boardwalk that extends out into the forest canopy 75 feet above the floor. This view is even more beautiful in autumn as the fall colors come to life and brighten the whole forest.
  3. Head to the Sensory Garden: The garden features five beds dedicated to one of the senses and a quiet space to sit and reflect.
  4. Learn More at L+A+N+D: From the Bernheim website about this new addition: “This bold, new initiative annually celebrates innovative design concepts for immersive outdoor installations on a grand scale that will spark imaginations, conversations, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.”
  5. Climb the Historic Fire Tower: Take in the view from the historic fire tower, the oldest structure on-site. When the tower is open, volunteer naturalists will guide you up the 961-foot staircase for one of the best views in the state!
  6. Stop by the Visitor’s Center: Don’t miss checking out Kentucky’s first LEED® platinum building. Explore the gift shop, grab lunch at Isaac’s café, and learn more about the sustainable design.

Chocolate & Bourbon: A Match Made in Heaven During Bourbon Heritage Month

Why Pair Chocolate and Bourbon?

Chocolate and bourbon are like old friends who bring out the best in each other. The rich, creamy texture of chocolate melds beautifully with the bold, spicy, and sometimes sweet bourbon notes. When you pair them just right, it's like a symphony of flavors playing on your palate.

Think about it: a smooth, dark chocolate truffle infused with a robust bourbon—you're not just tasting a piece of candy and sipping a drink. You’re experiencing a complex dance of flavors, where the caramel and vanilla notes of the bourbon enhance the deep cocoa tones, and maybe even pick up on a hint of oak or spice that you never noticed before.

And who better to guide you on this journey than Art Eatables? Their truffles aren't just chocolates; they’re little flavor bombs designed to complement and highlight the unique characteristics of different bourbons. Each bite is an invitation to expand your appreciation of bourbon, to explore its nuances, and to savor every drop of that amber nectar.

I’ve been around bourbon as a more than a light bystander for more than a decade. We talk on the show all the time about how we got to know bourbon at a good time but today we get our reality check. I put a message out on a local facebook group in Louisville asking for anyone who has gotten into bourbon in less than a year to send me a message about coming on the show to give us their perspective because I want to know what goes through the mind of today’s new bourbon drinker. Brian Sekelsky and Justin Kingery are two new bourbon enthusiasts and we dive into the factors that have influenced their buying habits. We touch on the variety of bourbons available today, including finishes, and the their openness to trying new things instead of chasing what’s popular.

Show Notes:

  • Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about
  • Woodford Double Oak and Blanton’s are mentioned as gateway bourbons
  • Cocktails played a role in their bourbon journey, with the Old Fashioned being a favorite.
  • Finding rare bottles and sharing their bourbon experiences with others brings excitement and enjoyment.
  • Personal taste and experimentation are key in the bourbon journey. Intrigue, emotion, and consistency are key factors in the speaker’s bourbon collection.
  • We value the experience and emotional connection with bourbon.
  • Social media, YouTube channels, and Facebook groups play a role in shaping the intrigue.
  • We’re skeptical about opening expensive bottles and considers price when making purchasing decisions.
  • Label recognition and bottle design influence the speaker’s purchasing decisions.
  • The variety of bourbons available today, including finishes, offers new and interesting experiences.
  • We touch on the importance of truth in advertising in the bourbon industry.
