Heaven Hill Distillery has announced the release of the Fall 2023 edition of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey at 8 years old. Comprised of barrels produced in Fall 2015, the twelfth national release ushers in the latest edition to the decanter series which adds to the bottled-in-bond legacy.

Bottled in an ornate decanter, the Fall edition is denoted by a black label. As was the case for the past editions, this edition’s tax strip, which has always been a signature of transparency on bottled-in-bond products, will disclose when the liquid was produced and bottled. The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Fall edition will be available in the 750ml size on an allocated basis. It meets the strict requirements of a bottled-in-bond: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years, and bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume. This edition is available at the suggested retail price of $109.99.

The Fall 2023 edition of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey bares a bright burnished copper color, with a nose of brown sugar and toasted bread in addition to cinnamon and nutmeg. The taste is smooth on the palate beginning with notes of peaches and cream, followed by peppery spice and caramel sweetness. Spice notes linger in the finish along with peach and pear notes and a caramelized brown sugar finale.

“As a leader of the Bottled-in-Bond category, Heaven Hill is proud to offer a premium product within this special class which showcases the authenticity and quality of the American Whiskey portfolio,” said Conor O’ Driscoll, Master Distiller at Heaven Hill Distillery. “The Fall 2023 8-year-old Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond has the best qualities of a classic Kentucky Bourbon with the unique sweetness and spice this beloved brand is known for.”

Acquired in 1999 by Heaven Hill, the legendary Old Fitzgerald line is well-known for its distilling pedigree and intriguing story behind its namesake, John E. Fitzgerald, whose legacy is also heralded by the Larceny Bourbon brand.

Irish Distillers, producer of Jameson, Powers and Redbreast, today announces the appointment of Billy Leighton to Master Blender Emeritus as Dave McCabe steps into his predecessor’s role as the new Master Blender at Irish Distillers.

Billy will remain at the business supporting Irish Distillers’ brands as Master Blender Emeritus following an incredible 47-year career at Irish Distillers. Billy originally started as a trainee accountant, in the then Irish Distillers owned Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim. He then moved into production, working in a variety of roles across bottling, warehousing, maturation and blending before being appointed Master Blender at Midleton Distillery in 2004.

As blender, Dave McCabe has spent several years working closely with Billy gaining experience, knowledge and an in depth understanding into the art of blending. Dave joined the business in 2010 and held several roles, including Irish Whiskey Academy Tutor, International Whiskey Ambassador and Process Technologist, before being appointed Blender in 2018.

Leighton said, “I have spent most of my working life at Irish Distillers, and I am truly grateful for the opportunities my job and this business has afforded me. While I will be stepping down from the Master Blender role, I will not be stepping away from the business and I look forward to embracing my Master Blender Emeritus role, working with brand teams on special launches. I would like to take this time to wish a much-respected colleague and friend, Dave McCabe, the very best as he takes the Master Blender baton and I look forward to continuing to work with him. Dave and I have worked closely together for years and really enjoy our collaborations.  I’ve seen first-hand his passion, expertise and knowledge that will ensure he is a fantastic Master Blender. Our whiskeys are in great hands.”

Ardbeg Rollercoaster Whisky

Ardbeg Distillery has released a new limited edition of rare whiskies that reflects aspects of its early history. The unique collection constitutes two distinct expressions and is dubbed the Rollercoaster.

Notably, the limited edition only released 143 sets drawn from two rare cask single malt of a historic Ardbeg valued at over £85,000. The first was originally distilled in 1981 during the temporary closing of the distillery. Most people at that time doubted that the Ardbeg would ever produce whisky again. This bottle is reflective of the darkest hours of the company’s history.

The second bottle of the Rollercoaster set represents the newfound hope that revived the Ardbeg Distillery in 1989.  The cask was the first to be laid after reopening the distillery that year. A little bit over 42 years, the inspiration lives in this bottle.  Together, the 1981 cask and 1989 cask, are witness to the strength of The Ardbeg spirit in surviving under all conditions.

The Ardbeg Rollercoaster Limited Edition SetArdbeg Rollercoaster Whisky

Ever since its inception in 1815, on the remote Scottish island of Islay, Ardbeg won the reputation and fame as home to the world’s smokiest drams.  It was aged in bourbon casks, then transferred into an Oloroso sherry cask for rich, spicy notes. Celebrating Ardbeg’s 1989 revival, this is one of the last casks left from that year.

‘‘Ardbeg The Rollercoaster is a unique opportunity for collectors to experience two very different tastes of Ardbeg’s heritage, and acquire a set of bottlings with an incredible story,’’ said Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden.

‘‘The 1981 expression was made from some of the last malts ever to emerge from our maltings as Ardbeg teetered on the brink of closure.  It is a beautiful combination of sweet and spicy sherried notes and hints of Ardbeg’s savory side. ”

After tasting the final release, Simon Deals added: ‘I find the 1981 whisky unusually mentholic and cooling, and the 1989 particularly elegant and reserved. Both are fascinating representations of highly significant years in Ardbeg’s history.’

His appetite for delicious whiskey meant his favorite barrels always ended up lighter than most, earning them the nickname Old Fitzgerald barrels. Heaven Hill acquired his namesake wheated Old Fitzgerald line in 1999, and added the Larceny expressions to the family in 2012. The skeleton key on the Larceny is reminiscent of Fitzgerald’s keys to the bonded warehouses he patrolled.
