New Riff Continues Delving Into Malted Grain Whiskeys

New Riff Distilling announced the release of two limited-edition fall whiskies, both building on the distillery’s exploration of malted grains. The Maltster T50 Crystal Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Aroostook Malted Rye Whiskey will be available before the holidays. Both whiskeys are bottled in bond without chill filtration.
“We are always searching for the next new riff,” said co-founder Jay Erisman. “Sometimes those come from drawing on past experience for inspiration, and sometimes inspiration just falls out of the sky — and this fall, it’s both. These two releases are a celebration of the ancient tradition of malted grains that are united by their six years in the warehouse and by their shared embrace of the glory of malt.”
The New Riff Maltster T50 Crystal Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey builds on past Maltster releases. Head Distiller Brian Sprance has a background in brewing and wanted to highlight a malted barley called T50 crystal malt in this distillation. Typically used in pale ales and bitters, crystal malt lends delicate toasty-toffee notes as well as color and head retention. Combined with malted rye, it creates a husky, complex high-rye bourbon.
“The secret to the Maltster T50 is that two exceptional malts are at play, creating a dance of gentle rye spice and molten toffee,” Erisman said, describing the nose as “toasty with emergent rye spice, cocoa nib, and faint red fruits.” Adding a splash of water relaxes it to expose more core maltiness and creamier dulce de lechenotes. The palate is “drier than the nose suggests,” he said, with the husky details and gentle rye spices. On the finish, Erisman notes a “big rye flourish with gentle but insistent clove, pink peppercorn and cacao husk.”
The second fall release is a riff on New Riff’s Malted Rye program, which includes a core malted rye release that debuted in 2021 and a sherry-finished expression released earlier this year. Erisman said when New Riff began making malted rye in 2014, the only consistent source of good quality malted rye in the necessary quantities was Germany. The distillery has imported malted rye from Germany since then but also kept an eye on growing American craft maltsters.
“One of these is Sugar Creek Malt Co., in Lebanon, Indiana,” Erisman said. “Founder and head maltster Caleb Michalke offered us a rare malted rye, grown in Kentucky and using the Aroostook variety of rye grain. We were thrilled at this opportunity to try a Kentucky-grown rye, but especially to use a different variety of rye than our usual German supply.”
Erisman said sampling the Aroostook Malted Rye as it aged was increasingly fascinating, as it showed dramatically different character from the distillery’s standard Malted Rye made from imported German malted rye. Grown in Kentucky and malted in Indiana, the Aroostook Malted Rye matured to be a “bolder and spicier whiskey overall” in comparison.
On the nose, the Aroostook Malted Rye opens with thick-cut fruit and vanilla confection, quickly developing with rye spices. Erisman noted water turns it drier, huskier and draws out the fruits with notes of menthol. “The palate is medium- to full-bodied with dark fruits and grassy cereal rye, with mint, clove and red fruit skin on the finish,” he said.
New Riff Maltster T50 Crystal Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 100 proof with a mashbill of 65% corn, 20% malted rye and 15% T50 Crystal Malt. It is aged six years with a suggested retail price of $59.99 It is available in limited quantities throughout portions of New Riff’s distribution footprint and through New Riff’s Whiskey Club.
New Riff Kentucky-Grown Aroostook Malted Rye Whiskey is bottled at 100 proof with a mashbill of 100% Aroostook Kentucky-grown malted rye. It is aged six years with a suggested retail price of $59.99.

WhistlePig Rye Whiskey’s The Boss Hog IX: Siren’s Song

WhistlePig Rye Whiskey Boss Hog IX The Siren's Song
WhistlePig Rye Whiskey tells BourbonBlog.com they are releasing their rare and annual Boss Hog limited edition for 2022.

This is a single barrel, bottled at proof and distinctly unique from anything they’ve done before for a suggested retail price of $599.99 / 750 ml bottle.

Each bottle in the ninth edition is graced by the famous pewter pig as it has been in prior releases. However, for this release, there are nine distinct tops that are dressed as the different Muses in Greek mythology.

Thus, this gives collectors yet another reason to be on the hunt!

How They Made The Boss Hog IX: Siren’s Song

WhistlePig says Siren’s Song is an odyssey of maturation: a twice-finished, well-aged Rye that slumbered in casks seasoned with Greek Fig Nectar and barrels suffused with homemade Tentura.

Tentura is a traditional Greek liqueur born in the Peloponnesian city of Patras enlivened by the muses and inspired by Hellenic family recipes.

For the WhistlePig Rye Farm’s Tentura recipe, they scratch-made it with ingredients hailing from both Greece and their own fields of Shoreham, Vermont. It arrives in the glass throwing scents of cinnamon and citrus zest.

The palate finds ambrosial threads of clove, cardamom, and stewed orchard fruit, retreating upon rippled waves of raisin and prune.

Enter a labyrinth of flavor that would make even Homer blush.

“In homage to the Greek Muses who inspired all manner of discovery and creation, our Whiskey Scientist Liz and Head Blender Meghan have concocted a truly tantalizing elixir: Straight Rye Whiskey finished in barrels seasoned with Greek fig nectar and scratch Tentura,” WhistlePIg tells us.

Nine Bespoke Pewter Toppers

The  nine bespoke pewter toppers each represent one of the ancient greek muses: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania (all pictures below).

The famous pewter toppers which have always been created for WhistlePig by Danforth Pewter of Vermont are.

WhistlePig says, “Amass them all if you dare; these others of creation also birthed the mischievous and mysterious sirens.

They will undoubtedly lure collectors with their melodious call and this Siren’s Song is destined to echo through the ages.”

Old Forester made big news back in July when then OF Master Taster Jackie Zykan announced her departure from the brand.

Today, Old Forester announced that Kentucky native and industry veteran Melissa Rift is the new Master Taster/Brand Ambassador.

“Melissa brings a dynamic personality, a devotion to the bourbon industry and an enthusiasm for the rich heritage of our 152-year-old brand,” said Mark Bacon, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Super-Premium American Whiskey. “We’re thrilled to welcome her to the Brown-Forman family and are excited for her insights to amplify this new chapter in Old Forester’s legacy.”

This announcement marks a milestone and dream come true for Rift, who gained a holistic understanding of the growing bourbon industry from her beginnings as a bourbon tour guide. Most recently, she held a leadership role at Beam Suntory and previously served as Single Barrel Program Director at Bulleit Distilling Co.

“As the country’s first bottled bourbon, Old Forester has such a history –  but also an opportunity to usher in a new era for the entire industry,” Rift said. “There’s nothing better in the market than Old Forester – and I look forward to introducing more people to this authentic  brand.”

Born in Louisville, Rift authentically understands the rich culture of Kentucky bourbon and looks forward to sharing it with consumers, bartenders, media – and diverse consumers across the nation. She and her wife, Brittany, live in Louisville with their two dogs and two cats.

“I’m extremely excited to create a more inclusive bourbon industry to reflect the changing face of our beloved consumers and represent the Old Forester legacy so many love,” Rift said.

While Irish whiskey is celebrated around St. Patrick’s Day each spring, the style is worthy of recognition year-round. Single malt enthusiasts will find Irish examples aplenty, sometimes at considerably lower costs compared to their Scottish counterparts. The curious drinker will have plenty of other avenues to explore, as Irish cask-finishing is often leading the way on the innovation side. And fans of the true Irish style, single pot still, will be delighted by the growing number of expressions on the market.

These five whiskeys from the Fall 2022 Buying Guide are an excellent representation of this diverse category. Mainstays like Redbreast and the Spot range continue to deliver quality and innovation in tandem, while newcomers like Drumshanbo prove worthy of the global spotlight.

Get to Know These High-Scoring Irish Whiskeys

Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition single pot still
93 points, 50.5%, $95

The Irish-American whiskey trend works both ways. This golden dram serves up oak spices and lashings of creamy vanilla at 101 proof, with aromas of butter biscuits, sliced almond, and creamed coconut. Brown sugar, red fruits, and cherry lozenges on first sip, then cinder toffee, Milky Way, forest honey, and warm apple pie, ratcheting up lush vanilla, oakiness, and sweet concentrated fruitiness to finish. Water adds extra creaminess, if that’s possible.—Jonny McCormick

Gold Spot 9 year old single pot still
92 points, 51.4%, $120

Tumbling waves of spice on the nose, with pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and spicy oak, balanced with whole lime, kiwi, apple pie, dried raspberry, and a hint of watermelon. Smooth and easy drinking, with initial flavors of dried mango and papaya, then a surge of pepper and clove. Its finest moments lie beyond the spice peak when the delicious pot still creaminess spills over with vanilla, Brazil nut, hazelnut, cinnamon, and residual tropical fruitiness.—Jonny McCormick

Drumshanbo Galánta single malt 2021 Release
91 points, 46%, $100

The first single malt from Connacht in 107 years is sweet, juicy, and utterly moreish. It has a bouquet of honeycomb, vanilla sponge, lemon meringue pie, amaretti cookies, marzipan, white pepper, and a spritz of lime. Honey, vanilla, custard creams, peel oils, pepper, and waves of sweet lemon ease into baked fruits, ripe apricot, and sponge fingers soaked in orange liqueur. Gentle spice and Refreshers candy on the finish. (8,400 bottles).—Jonny McCormick

Writers’ Tears Cask Strength blend Vintage Release 2022
91 points, 54.6%, $150

Despite the rolling pot still spices at its core, the aromas paint a sweet, fruity, and mellow picture. Dried mango, banana chips, ripe pear, meringue, and heather honey aromas conceal the spicy mayhem to come. Dominant spices surge through the mango and citrus peel flavors on the palate, leaving notes of fennel and cilantro in their wake. The spices carry on, beating the drum throughout the dry finish.—Jonny McCormick

Method & Madness Japanese Chestnut Finish single pot still
90 points, 48%, $95

Dry peppery spice and ample woody notes at the onset, with peppermint aromas building against a background of nuttiness, waxy leaves, and herbal notes. Licorice, orange peel, and ground pepper are overcome by a deluge of clove, bitter herbs, and woodiness, then the creamy mouthfeel erupts amid notes of menthol, clove, and unsweetened chocolate. This is the choice for the accustomed single pot still drinker who prefers Powers to Redbreast.—Jonny McCormick

In what reminds me of an 11 year old mixing flavors of pop (yes, pop... not soda or coke) at Burger King, Beam Suntory brand, Basil Hayden has introduced Bourbon finished in a Red Wine Cask.

Jonathan Marks, Senior Marketing Director for Global Small Batch Bourbon at Beam Suntory says:
We are creating new avenues for consumers to enjoy our light and inviting expressions through unique cask finishes and innovative releases. Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask Finish continues the Basil Hayden mission to opening up the category to new drinkers and occasions.
To make this expression, Basil Hayden blends the Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with bourbon partially aged in Californian red wine casks. It comes in at 80 proof (40% alcohol) and $59.99 MSRP and will be available nationwide. It has the following tasting notes:

Nose: Dried fruit notes with cherry & vanilla, hint of toasted oak

Taste: Sweet ambrosia with complex levels of charred oak

Finish: Warm with a crisp, delicate mouthfeel

My Take

My wife has an amazing expression that fits this release perfectly... Just because you AmeriCAN... doesn't mean you AmeriSHOULD. There are certain things that don't really go together... red wine and bourbon are two of those. I'm not sure who this release is for? Red wine drinkers don't necessarily want a wine flavored bourbon... nor do bourbon drinkers. For me, this is a very hard pass.
