I picked up this Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey at Trader Joe’s because of the bottle shape: it was so weird. I’d never heard of the brand and almost left it there, but curiosity won out and I picked it up. It wasn’t till I got home I discovered it was imported by Whistle Pig.

Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey Review

I’m not the biggest fan of Whistle Pig, but I thought it was interesting they were getting into the import business. Well, technically they’ve been in the import business for a while – importing Canadian rye and bottling it in Vermont – but interesting they’re just doing the importing. The distilling and bottling is all happening in Ireland.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes

EYE
Light Amber

NOSE
Banana taffy, malty sweetness, vanilla candy, graham, dried apples, touch waxy and floral.

Fairly standard aroma without anything sharp or off.

PALATE
Banana taffy, malty sweetness, vanilla candy, graham, dried apples, touch waxy and caramel.

Not too different from aroma and again a fairly standard delivery.

FINISH
Medium -> Banana, vanilla, baking spice and graham.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Decent balance, light body and a soft light feel.

Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Overall Thoughts and Score

Soft, slightly buttery and increadibly easy to sip. I thought the odd shaped bottle might make pouring awkward, but it actually made it a bit easier and I love those glass “corks”.

The aroma builds in sweetness as it opens but the palate builds in maltiness. It’s perfectly sippable and makes a great cocktail, like a Tipperary, if you ever want one. Well done Limavady on bringing something interesting to market.

SCORE: 3/5 (above average, worth checking out ~ B- | 80-82)

The whiskey itself is a blend of 4-11 yo Bourbon that was co-blended by Kentucky Owl’s John Rhea and the aforementioned Louise. An interesting take to have a guest blender, though far from the first “Irish-Bourbon” whiskey.

Kentucky Owl St. Paddy's Edition Review

A few years ago I reviewed the John L. Sullivan Irish Bourbon, a brand that only lasted one year on the market because its label was not TTB compliant despite having passed through TTB approval (happens all the time). The Sullivan was a blend of Irish Single Malt and Bourbon and it was actually quite good. Which is exactly what I’m wondering about with this KO: is it any good?

Let’s get to drinkin’ and find out!

Kentucky Owl St. Patrick’s Limited Edition Tasting Notes

EYE
Amber

NOSE
Graham cracker, corn, vanilla, oak, toffee, baking spice and a touch of cocoa.

There’s something in there that’s almost a fruity sweetness, but not quite. An intriguing sweet note.

PALATE
Caramel, oak, graham, cocoa, vanilla, baking spice and some leather with a bit of nuts.

This is one of the spicier Kentucky Owl bourbons I’ve tasted.

FINISH
Med-long -> Baking spice, oak and some citrus pop in before fading to hazelnuts and vanilla.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Decent balance, medium body and a soft velvety feel.

Kentucky Owl St. Patrick’s Limited Edition – Overall Thoughts and Score

As it opens the nose picks up a bit more oak and gets a bit darker, and sweeter, overall with the toffee note rising up a bit more. On the palate, the spice and oak slowly build till they’re the dominant character and the sweetness moves toward the back. After a while, the aroma and the palate diverge in the overall profile.

Not a bad bourbon at all. The most intriguing thing about the Kentucky Owl St. Patrick’s Limited Edition are the spice notes that slowly grow as it opens. After a while, it almost becomes a spice bomb and that’s not something I’ve had in a bourbon in a while.

SCORE: 3.5/5 (tasty, worth checking out ~ B | 83-86)

Bushmills 12 Years Single Malt Review

I love Bushmills… LOVE Bushmills. I’ve been a fan for over a decade and a half and I think they create not only some of the best Irish Whiskey, but some of the best sipping whiskey period… I just wish they’d bottle at least at 46% and NCF.

I’ve though this for a long time, and after trying some of the cask strength specialty casks a couple of years ago I’m even more of a believer in this. Until I tried them in that form I had no idea that on top of being more flavorful at higher proof and NCF, they’d also pick up a wonderful waxy texture.

The flavor I assumed would get a bit bolder, but that texture… wow. It was like some of the best waxy Clynelish SiBs I’ve had. I was shocked and I think if they did more in that form, specifically NCF, they’d go from having good whiskey to completley exceptional whisky across the board.

Alright, I’m stepping off the soapbox – let’s get to drinkin’!

Like the aroma this is elegant, it’s something I could sip anytime and be happy.

Well balanced, medium body and a warm soft feel.

Bushmills 12 Years Single Malt – Overall Thoughts and Score

It was a foregone conclusion I would buy a bottle of this when it arrived in CA because I’m a massive Bushmills fan (still waiting), but I’m very glad I got to try it before it arrived. Because now I’m going to buy two bottles instead of one!

Fruity, malty, sweet and a touch earthy and elegant, this is the perfect afternoon sipper. Which, not coincidentally, is how I finished off this sample bottle: sipping it on my porch on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Bushmills 12 Years Single Malt is delicious, just wish it offered a bit more in the texture department.

SCORE: 3.5/5 (tasty, worth checking out ~ B | 83-86)

Roe and Co Irish Whiskey is currently sourced, but will soon be made from their own distillate which must be aged for at least 3 years by Irish law. In 2019, Diageo built the distillery inside of the old Guinness power house, which isn’t too far from where the original Roe distillery (Thomas Street Distillery) was before it closed in 1926 due to hardships brought on by the American Prohibition. The current Guinness Brewery is using buildings it bought from Roe when the distillery closed.

Roe and Co Irish Whiskey Review

Prohibition in America was devastating to the Irish Whiskey producers and is largely what brought down so many of them and resulted in there being only 2 distilleries on Ireland for a while. Eventually, the Teelings opened Cooley and the category slowly grew and now there’s over 30 active distilleries. Most of which have sprung up in just the last decade.

Memories make me thirsty so let’s get to drinkin’!

Dried orchard fruit and banana chips, birthday cake with vanilla frosting and some notes of baking spice and copper.

There is a solid malty presence here, or at least it’s presenting that way with the sweetness.

PALATE
Banana, caramel, malty sweetness, baking spice, copper and a bit of vanilla and copper.

Palate is like a slightly toned down, but more refined, version of the aroma.

Medium -> Baking spice, vanilla, dried fruit and a some oaky hints.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Good sense of balance, medium-full body and a warm soft feel.

Roe and Co Irish Whiskey – Overall Thoughts and Score

Before I get into the whiskey itself, I need to mention how much I like the design of the bottle. Not only does it look good, but it’s easy to hold and pour from. The whiskey itself is soft, sweet, semi-rich, a bit fruity with a dollop of candy sweetness. This is a perfectly sippable whiskey, I’m enjoying a glass right now while writing this up. Though where I really like it is in cocktails.

I featured it in the Tipperary cocktail video I made on St. Paddy’s and after filming I drank the cocktail while editing the video and after posting on the TWJ Insta, I made another. Roe and Co Irish Whiskey is a tasty and flexible NCF whiskey that gets zero real complaints out of me.
