Bushmills Rare Casks 29 Years PX Finish Review

I am so, so, happy that Bushmills is putting out things like this Bushmills Rare Casks 29 Years PX Finish. I’m even happier that they aren’t neutering them with low proof and chill-filtering. Bushmills Rare Casks 29 Years PX Finish Review

Some of you are going to scream at the price, like I did, but it’s the state of the whiskey world we’re in. Remember when you could just stroll into a store and grab Weller 12 off the bottom shelf for $22? I certainly do, it was my house whiskey for years. But now…

Let’s just get to drinkin’!

Bushmills Rare Casks 29 Years PX Finish Tasting Notes

EYE
Drying blood

NOSE
SHERRY, dried dark fruit, printer’s ink, leather, chocolate, roasted malt, copper, oak, and some marmalade sweetness.

Depth… this has a ton of depth and with each sniff, I get a nuanced new note of something new. Baking spice, fig, dates, brown sugar and on and on. It’s lovely.

PALATE
Pull all the notes from the aroma over and add a bit more ink, copper, oak, and a bit of tart cherries to it and you end up with a darker, yet fuller, version of the aroma. And it’s just a delight to sip.

FINISH
Long -> Dried dark fruit, leather, pastries, oak, copper, baking spice, and blackberries.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Perfectly balanced, round full body, and a soft oily, heavy, feel.

Bushmills Rare Casks 29 Years PX Finish – Overall Thoughts and Score

Bushmills is good. Bushmills can be great. This Bushmills is stupendous. It has that deep, old school, rancio darkness to it. That inky, sticky deep, and dark profile of sherried scotches from days gone by. As it opens it even picks up some of those oily/petrol/machine-like notes that would sometimes show up in those old Scotches from the 80s.

Being a member of LAWS I’ve been able to sip my way through an embarrassment of riches and this reminds me of so many of those funky, complex, brooding sherry bombs I’ve had in the past. It’s a true pleasure to slowly sip my way through this sample. Adding a few drops of water at a time to slowly strip away layers of alcohol and reveal new horizons of flavor and aroma.

SCORE: 5/5 – Superstar (among the best in this style A+ | 100)

Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Irish Whiskey Review

The whiskey in the bottle is essentially Bushmills White, with the oldest whisky in it being 5-years-old, but it’s delivered at 46%, instead of 40%. Oh, and it’s non chill-filtered… and what a difference that 6% and NCF makes. Not just on the flavor and aroma, but on the texture which combines to create an experience that is a significant step above the usual white label.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes

EYE
Golden hay

NOSE
Banana malt, hay, dried orchard fruit, vanilla, honey and a touch of oak.

It smells quite nice. It’s not complex, but what’s there is warm, deep and buttery.

PALATE
Honied orchard fruit, banana chips, hay-like malt, Cornpops, vanilla and caramel with a slightly metallic hint.

Again, not complex, but what’s there is buttery and warm.

FINISH
Med-long -> Honey, dried fruit, malt, vanilla, and orange candy.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well-balanced, medium body and a soft buttery feel.

Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Irish Whiskey – Overall Thoughts and Score

This is not a complex, big, bold, whiskey… but it is buttery, round and delightful. And comparing it to the standard Bushmills white definitely shows what whiskey nerd fans have been saying for years. Bushmills is good, but non chill-filtered Bushmills bottled at least at 46% would be even better… significantly better.

I know the Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Irish Whiskey is a one-off for the Peaky Blinders TV series, but they should just make this their standard and give the Bushmills 10, 12, 16 and the oh-so-lovely Bushmills 21 the exact same treatment. C’mon Bushmills, it’s what your fans want. Not just to taste your whiskey, but to experience it in all of its oily, buttery, malty, glory.

SCORE: 3/5 (above average, worth checking out ~ B- | 80-82)

Clonakilty Double Oak Irish Whiskey Review

“Triple Wood”… sure, because it uses three different “preparations” of wood, but it does that using just two different kinds of oak: American and European. Three styles, two oaks, makes sense. Now let’s see if it’s any good.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

Clonakilty Double Oak Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes

EYE
Straw

NOSE
Banana, honey, dried orchard fruit and vanilla candy, graham, and a touch of baking spice.

Pretty standard Irish Single Malt aroma with a nice fruity sweetness.

PALATE
Banana, honey graham, dried orchard fruit, vanilla taffy, baking spice, and a hint of grain.

Again, pretty standard, but pretty darn nice.

FINISH
Medium -> Banana chips, honey graham, and some spice.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Decent balance, medium body, soft warm feel.

Clonakilty Double Oak Irish Whiskey- Overall Thoughts and Score

Not what I’d call a stand-out, but for a new brand, it’s pretty good. Holds a nice balance, has a nice easy aroma and flavor and it’s remarkably easy to sip on. My first glass of it disappeared quickly as did the Perfect Tipperary I made with it after.

Sure it could use a bit more time for some added maturity, but as it sits now it’s enjoyable and has a nice, natural-tasting, sweetness that carries it from sniff to finish. I’ll enjoy sipping and mixing through this Clonakilty Double Oak Irish Whiskey.
