Powerful Storm Babet hit Ireland and forced Pernod-Ricard-owned Irish Distillers to temporarily shut their Midleton Distillery Experience visitor site after it was damaged by flooding from the nearby Owenacurra River Midleton town, located in County Cork, Ireland.

Storm Babet moved on and is currently rampaging through the UK, bringing severe flooding to most of the area as the storm sweeps through.

Midleton Distillery – home to Irish whiskey brands including Jameson, Powers, Redbreast, Midleton Very Rare, Spot, and Method and Madness – invested in the visitor experience center and it was due to be completed by 2025.

Irish whiskey producer, Waterford Distillery, has released a pair of heavily peated single malts – Waterford Peated: Lacken and Waterford Peated: Woodbrook – with barley from Lacken and Woodbrook farms.

Waterford Peated: Lacken was bottled at 57 PPM (phenol parts per million) while Waterford Peated: Woodbrook was bottled at 74 PPM.

Waterford Peated: Lacken is said to offer notes of apple, brine, campfire, creosote, driftwood, oyster shells and peach.

Waterford Peated: Woodbrook is said to offer notes of beeswax, bonfire, crème brûlée, lemon and shortbread.

Both Waterford Peated: Lacken and Waterford Peated: Woodbrook are being made available at the official distillery website [waterfordwhisky.com] for $110 per bottle.

Irish whiskey behemoth brand, Bushmills, has released a pair of single malt Irish whiskies – a 15-year-old and a 21-year-old – to begin their World Wood Series.

The Bushmills World Wood Series 15-year-old single malt was matured in both ex-bourbon first- and second-fill American oak casks, bottled at 46% alcohol by volume [92 proof] and is said to offer notes of caramel, hazelnut and vanilla.

The Bushmills World Wood Series 21-year-old single malt was matured in both bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry butts for 18 years, finished in first-fill Marsala wine casks for three years, bottled at 46% alcohol by volume [92 proof] and is said to offer notes of brown sugar, orange and vanilla.

Both Bushmills World Wood Series 15-year-old and 21-year-old Irish whiskies are being made available exclusively in travel retail venues with the 15-year-old at $90 per 700ml bottle and the 21-year-old at $265 per 700ml bottle.

Isobel goes missing but Irish whiskey brand Tullamore D.E.W. stays home with a celebration of the town of Tullamore in County Offaly, Ireland, in their promotional video entitled “Where’s Isobel?”

The promotion was unique in that it was both filmed on location in Tullamore and starring local residents, the vast majority of whom had never acted before – although they are well-known in Tullamore – the exceptions being the distillery worker Shane [who has appeared on billboards around the USA] and local talent Sam Keeley who won the award for Best Actor in a Lead Role (Drama) at the 2022 Irish Film and Television Awards for his performance in “Kin”.

The Irishman – owned by Amber Beverage Group – has released a 22-year-old single malt Irish whiskey, the oldest age statement in their range.

The Irishman 22-Year-Old was aged in American oak bourbon barrels for 21 of those years before spending the final 12 months locked up in tawny Port casks from the Douro Valley in Portugal, then was bottled at cask strength of 49.43% alcohol by volume[98.86 proof].

Alas, only 600 bottles of The Irishman 22-Year-Old are being made available this year – along with another 600 bottles next year – but only in the Irish airports at Cork and Dublin for $550 per bottle.

Old school brand Chivas Regal has created a new blend – Chivas Regal 13 Irish Whiskey Cask – that includes some Irish whiskey in the mix.

Chivas Extra 13 Irish Whiskey Cask is a traditional Chivas Regal blend of Scotch whiskies but with the added twist of a portion of the blend being finished for an undisclosed amount of time in unnamed Irish whiskey casks

Chivas Extra 13 Irish Whiskey Cask was bottled at 40% alcohol by volume [80 proof] and is said to contain notes of honey, red apple and spice.

However, there is one caveat – Chivas Extra 13 Irish Whiskey Cask is only being made available in worldwide travel retail venues.

Midleton, County Cork-based Irish whiskey makers Method and Madness have released a new Irish whiskey finished in Quercus Garryana white oak casks.

Method and Madness Garryana Oak Edition Irish whiskey has been triple distilled from a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley [originally matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks] and finished between four and 12 months in casks made from virgin Quercus Garryana, a species of white oak native to the Pacific Northwest.

This unique wood is said to give Method and Madness Garryana Oak Edition notes of black pepper, clove, coffee cake and golden raisins.

Method and Madness Garryana Oak Edition has already been made available for $103 per bottle in Ireland and the UK and is expected to have a launch date in the USA later in 2023.

Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition combines a pair of whiskies aged separately in bourbon and ruby Port casks for 27 and 28 years respectively, before being joined in whiskey matrimony for a three-month maturation period in two tawny Port casks, bottled at 56.3% alcohol by volume [112.6 proof] and is said to offer notes of almond, cacao nibs,​​ dried fruits and red berry compote.

Only 780 bottles of Redbreast Dream Cask Port to Port Edition are being made available exclusively through Redbreast’s online members’ club The Birdhouse, for $625 per bottle.

The limited edition Green Spot Quails’ Gate was initially matured in both American oak and ex-sherry casks before being finished for 16 months in Quails’ Gates’ pinot noir casks, bottled at 46% alcohol by volume [92 proof] and is said to offer notes of apple, cherry, cranberry, nutmeg, pear, raspberry and vanilla.

Green Spot Quails’ Gate Irish whiskey is being made available in Canada, Ireland, France, the UK and the USA for $80 per bottle.

Writers’ Tears 2023 Cask Strength Irish whiskey is a blend of aged single pot still and single malt whiskies – both spending time in American oak ex-bourbon barrels – bottled at 54.8% alcohol by volume [109.6 proof] and is said to offer notes of caramel, ginger, hazelnut and honey.

Only 8,700 bottles of Writers’ Tears Irish whiskey are being made available across select markets worldwide – with 1,800 bottles distributed in the USA and 6,900 allocated to markets including Asia, Canada, France, Ireland, South Africa and the UK.
