Bulleit Frontier Whiskey recently announced that Barrel Strength Bourbon Batch 8 is now available on shelves nationwide.
Bulleit Barrel Strength is comprised of whiskey barrels that are emptied and combined into a single batch without the inclusion of water at any point in the process. Per the brand, it is created with their high rye mash bill similar to Bulleit Bourbon.
The alcohol by volume varies by batch because the bourbon is bottled straight from the barrel, uncut and unfiltered, but will generally range from 120-125 proof. Packaging uses the iconic Bulleit frontier-inspired bottle, adorned with a black label and orange accents. Batch 8 comes in at 121.8 proof with a unique ABV of 60.9%.
PRICING: SRP of $59.99 for a 750 ml bottle, which varies by market.

After five years, a 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold Medal, and a clamor of requests from bartenders and fans alike, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey is announcing the return of its 12-Year-Old American Straight Rye Whiskey.
Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old is a limited-availability extension of Bulleit Rye Whiskey, America's #1 selling rye whiskey1. The 12-Year-Old uses the same mash bill as the flagship Rye: 95% rye and 5% malted barley- one of the highest rye percentages on the market. Aged and matured to perfection in new charred American white oak barrels for a minimum of 12 years, this 2024 release incorporates whiskey from barrels aged up to 17 years in the blend. The result is a smooth, aged taste as before, but with nuanced differences from the 2019 release. On the nose, we get light, fruity, woody-oaky, floral, and vanilla-spice notes. Bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV), on the palate it is semi-sweet, clean, and crisp. The finish is enjoyable with a slight-woody vanilla spice taste.
Jesse Damashek, Senior Vice President of Whiskies & Liqueurs at Diageo commented:
Consumers and bartenders alike prefer rye's unique spicy flavor profile which adds a distinctiveness to classic cocktails. At Bulleit, we are proud to have been able to contribute to this fast-growing category ever since we launched our first rye expression in 2011.
In bringing back the Rye 12-Year-Old we are responding to the demands from whiskey lovers for more premium expressions in the rye category. Our first release in 2019 performed exceptionally in the on and off trade. What we've created with this 2024 release continues our long tradition of striving to satisfy the growing appetite for bold, distinctive, and delicious premium whiskey."
Bulleit Master Blender Andrew MacKay added:
This Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old release remains true to the rye whiskies we've crafted before. The rye spicy character shines through the age of the whiskies and balances with those mature, elevated, and well-rounded flavors that originate from hand-selected barrels up to 17 years old. I do think it is best enjoyed neat or possibly with a single ice cube – which opens up some fruity character.
Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old is available nationally (except for Maine) wherever fine spirits are sold, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $54.99 for a 750ml bottle. The whiskey is packaged in the iconic Bulleit bottle, with a new all-green label that prominently features the 12-year-old age statement.
My Take
This is an amazing price for a 12 year whiskey. I've already seen this out and about. I think this is one to pick up and give it a go.

This whiskey’s release earlier this month has spawned a lot of questions, and Bulleit master blender Andrew Mackay joins us this week with some answers. In the news, Scotch Whisky exports plummeted in 2023, and major drinks companies are blaming economic headwinds in the U.S. for lagging sales. We’ll have the details, along with the story of a British distiller facing extradition to his native Poland after two decades on the run.

Glencadam
The east Highland distillery of Glencadam has announced two limited edition cask finished single malts - the Glencadam 15 years old Reserva de Madeira and the Glencadam 17 years old Reserva PX. Both whiskies were initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before their respective finishing periods in ex-Madeira wine and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
The Glencadam 15 years old Reserva de Madeira (pictured, above left) was distilled in 2008 and has been finished in casks sourced from the Portuguese island of Madeira. These ex-Madeira wine casks have yielded just 5,826 bottles, which are released at 46% ABV. It is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. A bottle will cost £110.
The Glencadam 17 years old Reserva PX (pictured, above right) was distilled in 2006 and has been finished in ex-Pedro Ximenez quarter casks sourced from Spain. There are just 4,188 bottles available. These are also released at 46% ABV and are non-chill filtered and of natural colour. A bottle will cost £150. Both whiskies are available in specialist retailers in selected world markets.
Glenlivet
The Speyside distillery of Glenlivet has announced a new single malt that is described as a first for the Scotch whisky category. The Glenlivet Fusion Cask sees the whisky part-matured in bespoke casks build for the brand from a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-rum barrel staves. The first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-rum barrels were hand selected, dismantled and reassembled by an expert team of coopers.
The Glenlivet Fusion Cask is initially launched this month in the USA and forms part of the famous distillery's 200th anniversary celebrations, which will take place throughout the year. It is bottled at 40% ABV and will retail in selected US states for the recommended price of $US96.
"As a team, we work closely with our partners at the cooperage to ensure the handmade casks are of the highest quality, and this intricate dismantling and reassembling process to create new bespoke casks ensures a distinctive and expertly crafted finish."

What does that mean? By volume? Certain price point? Geo parameters? We shall elaborate on the selection process and how it’s done.
What Goes Into Drinks International(DI) RankingSystem?
Each year (est. 2015), DI releases an annual report on the best selling spirits per category, according to data from bar owners and managers across the globe. Per DI, that number is 100+ bars in total. While that doesn’t jump out as a large quantity of date, they rely more on the quality of each data source as the bars are noted as being some of the best and most recognized in their respective countries, 33 countries in total are represented per DI.
Directly from DI: The Annual Brands Report results are the culmination of a survey of 100 bars from 33 countries around the world which have been nominated or won international awards. The report offers a picture of the buying habits of the world’s best bars – not only which brands sell best, but also what’s trending to indicate the brands that are hot right now.

Maker’s Mark
Bulleit
Michter’s
Woodford Reserve
Buffalo Trace
Wild Turkey
Jim Beam
Jack Daniel’s
Rittenhouse
Four Roses
DI had the following context regarding their list ranking:
Historically, Maker’s Mark is the top-performing brand in this section having topped thelist five times overall ahead ofBullet, the Diageo brand whichis once again the runner- up. However, Bullet is the in-form brand, having been in the top two every year since 2016.
Michter’s Continues Red Hot Climb: The favourite to break apart the power couple atop the list is Michter’s. Since making its debut in 2016, the Kentucky-based brand has experienced a consistent rise on the bestselling list to break into the podium for the first time this year. And having won Bartender’s Choice and topped the trending list, it’s clearly the in-vogue whiskey brand. Looking closer at the top trending list, it’s the premium brands which are proving popular. The likes of Jack Daniel’s has been replaced with the more top-end Blanton’s in 2024. DI

DI also releases a “TOP 10 TRENDING” report annually. This is more subjective to what each bar notes as being “on the rise” if you will. Hot. The up and up. Taking #1 for AW on this list is Louisville based Michter’s. Of note, Michter’s was also #1 on last year’s Top Trending Brands list.
TOP 10 BARTENDER’S CHOICE
Michter’s Take #1 Spot: Per DI, this is the player’s player award of the bar industry. They asked their chosen global top 100 bars to name one brand which they have a particular soft spot for, a brand they like working with above all others, across any category. Music to ours, Michter’s not only made the list as the only American Whiskey predominant company, but it grabbed the #1 spot! Salud!

My Take
The first thing I want to mention is how ridiculous some of the names are. I've been in meetings like this where someone has a really bad idea, and the rest of the group goes along with it. There is no bourbon in the world anyone would want that tastes like Mexican Hot Chocolate. It's doing the release a disservice.
In terms of the release, aside from the stupid names and the obvious bottles to avoid (Mexican Hot Chocolate, Fruit Pizza, etc.), this is a decent release with plenty of supply and a good price for an 8 year single barrel. If there is one you see out in the wild, I'd check it against the tasting notes and make sure you're not stuck with a dud.

Bulleit barrel strength bourbon has deep rich flavors that make this a winner. How does it stack up against competitors with similar price points, like Larceny, Maker’s Mark, 1792, and Elijah Craig? Bulliet can stand shoulder to shoulder with them all. This isn’t an entry level product, and its flavor warrants a higher price point. It’s worth it. Read our full review to learn more!

Bulleit Barrel Strength Bourbon Review
Bulleit’s barrel strength bourbon has deep rich flavors that make this a winner.
History
The Bulleit Distilling Co. has an interesting backstory. Between 1830 and 1860, the tavern keeper Augustus Bulleit made a high-rye bourbon. Bulleit disappeared without a trace while transporting his product from Kentucky to New Orleans. His disappearance remains a mystery to this day. Fast forward to 1987, and his great-great grandson, Thomas E. Bulleit Jr., left his successful law practice to revive the family bourbon by starting the Bulleit Distilling Company, according to the Bulleit website.
I love big, bold bourbons, which is why I think this is the best of the Bulleit brands. The Bulleit Frontier Whiskey 10-year is a far lighter bourbon without the character and complexities of the Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey Barrel Strength. The barrel strength also isn’t overly hot and is easy to sip without ice. Given the price point, you probably don’t want to use it as a mixer, which would waste a terrific pour.
Conclusion – Bulleit Barrel StrengthBourbon
Just like any purchase, the question regarding the Bulleit Barrel Strength Bourbon is one of value. How does it stack up against competitors with similar price points, like Larceny, Maker’s Mark, 1792, and Elijah Craig? Bulleit can stand shoulder to shoulder with them all. This isn’t an entry level product, and its flavor warrants a higher price point. It’s worth it.

Ever since Old Crow and Old Taylor aggressively protected their trademarks in the 1800’s, setting the stage for current-day trademark law, bourbon brands have kept trademark attorneys busy.
Diageo’s Bulleit brand and W.J. Deutsch & Sons’ Redemption brand have been locked in litigation for years, but as of last week, the federal district court in the Southern District of New York entered a permanent injunction against Redemption. In sum, the court ordered Redemption to change its bottle and trade dress immediately.
In 2017, Bulleit sued Redemption, claiming that Redemption’s 2016 packaging redesign was “strikingly similar to that of Diageo’s Bulleit whiskey and copies the same vintage style and appearance,” and alleging that this infringed on Bulleit’s trademark and trade dress rights. Redemption responded with bluster, stating that Bulleit’s complaint “is devoid of any merit whatsoever” and asserted its own claims against Bulleit, even alleging that Bulleit had obtained its trademark fraudulently by making knowingly false statements to the Trademark Office.
Earlier this year, the parties went to trial in New York, with Redemption losing its counterclaims against Bulleit, but without Bulleit being awarded any damages. While Bulleit was not able to convince the jury on the issue of damages, the jury concluded that Bulleit’s trade dress is valid and protectable and that its packaging is famous, which paved the way for Bulleit to ask the court to enter an injunction.
That’s just what Bulleit did after the trial, and the court agreed that an injunction against Redemption was warranted. On September 7, 2022, the court recounted Bulleit’s use of its iconic bottle for 21 years, that it was nationally famous, and that Bulleit spent $56 million advertising in the five years before Redemption’s bottle redesign in 2016 (a year in which the court noted that Bulleit had $150 million in sales). It probably did not help that Redemption’s witnesses admitted that “consumers already know and love” Bulleit.
The jury’s conclusion that Bulleit’s trade dress was diluted by the Redemption packaging created a presumption that Bulleit was irreparably harmed, but Redemption still argued that Bulleit failed to prove a loss of any goodwill or erosion of its trade dress. The court disagreed, finding instead that Bulleit had provided “ample evidence show[ing] a loss of goodwill and the whittling away of the distinctiveness of Bulleit packaging to the detriment of its reputation and its ability to signify to the public that it is a unique product… .” When Redemption introduced its new packaging, Bulleit’s growth declined from the high 20’s, to 10 percent, and then single digits, while Redemption earned over $21 million in profits.
So, what does this mean for Redemption? First, although it might appeal, Redemption has been ordered to stop using its current packaging that looks like Bulleit’s. Whatever Redemption bottles had been sold by the brand as of September 7 can be sold to consumers, but there can be no new sales to distributors. Second, Redemption was ordered to redesign its packaging to “convey a substantially different commercial impression.”
While Bulleit’s victory was not nearly as convincing as Brown-Forman’s legendary triumph over Barton in the Woodford v. Ridgewood case, it continues a long line of authority that should keep new brands cautious and should act as a warning to marketers who push for brand redesign to capture the look and feel of popular brands. Originality is the safest way to avoid expensive lawsuits.
