Bladnoch

The revived Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the oldest ever expression to be released under the current ownership - the Bladnoch 30 years old. The new whisky is a combination of just two casks - a first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry barrel and a first-fill ex-Moscatel cask. It has been created by Dr. Nick Savage, the Master Distiller at Bladnoch.

The Bladnoch 30 years old is bottled at 45.5% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The release is limited to just 950 bottles with each costing £1,000 ($1,230 US). It will be available from www.bladnoch.com and the distillery shop, plus selected specialist retailers in selected world markets.

Macallan

The Speyside distillery of Macallan has announced their latest series - The Macallan M Collection 2022 Releases. The collection is designed to show the foundations of Macallan's whisky making, which are known as The Six Pillars, and consists of three new whiskies - the Macallan M, M Black and M Copper. All are presented in bespoke decanters created by the famous French crystal manufacturer Lalique.

Macallan M celebrates the whisky's natural colour and is bottled at 45% ABV.  M Black features rare peated spirit that is occasionally made at the distillery and is released at 46% ABV. M Copper showcases the small stills and is bottled at 42% ABV. All have been matured in sherry seasoned oak barrels and will be available in limited numbers via selected whisky and luxury retailers worldwide. The Macallan M will cost £5,000 ($6,150 US) a bottle, M Black £5,700 ($7,000 US) and M Copper £6,250 ($7,700 US).

Redbreast
The popular Irish single pot still brand of Redbreast has announced a new series of whiskeys, and the first release in that series. The Redbreast American Oak Series will be exclusive to the United States and kicks off with the Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition. The new range will celebrate the integral role that American oak barrels play in the creation of the Redbreast range.

The Kentucky Oak Edition has been initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso sherry butts from Spain. The whiskey was then finished for between three and seven months in specially created virgin American white oak casks. The Redbreast Kentucky Oak Edition is available now in America and will retail for $96 a bottle.

White Peak
The craft English whisky distillery of White Peak has announced the second release of their Wire Works single malt - the Wire Works Small Batch. It follows their inaugural release in February. The new whisky is a vatting of American oak ex-bourbon casks and French oak STR (shaved, toasted and recharred) barrels. There are just 4,300 bottles and these are released at 46.2% ABV. The Wire Works Small Batch will only be available from the distillery shop in Derbyshire or via www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk. It is part of a wider release programme for 2022. A bottle will cost £60.

The Alinta is the latest addition to the core range of the Lowland distillery of Bladnoch. It is the first known smoky expression in the distillery's history. The spirit was distilled from peated malt that is produced for just a short period each year and accounts for under 10% of all spirit made there. Alinta has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill ex-Pedro Ximenez casks. The casks were hand selected and married together by Dr. Nick Savage, the Master Distiller at Bladnoch. The word 'alinta' translates as 'fire' or 'smoke' from indigenous languages found in southeast Australia and references the heritage of David Prior, Bladnoch's Australian owner.

Bladnoch is located in a remote spot of Dumfries & Galloway, close to the village of Wigtown, in southern Scotland. It was founded in 1817 by brothers John and Thomas McClelland. The name is derived from the ancient Gaelic name Blaidzenoch and the nearby River Bladnoch supplies the water for the whisky production. The distillery has had a chequered history with numerous closures in its two centuries due to operational, financial and location reasons.

The most recent closure came in 2014 when the previous ownership went into liquidation. David Prior took over a year later and completed a major refurbishment of the distillery. Production restarted in the Summer of 2017 with a new visitor centre later opened by HRH Prince Charles in September 2019. Production capacity is now 1.5 million litres per year.

Bladnoch Alinta is bottled at 47% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It is initially available at the distillery shop or via www.bladnoch.com. Distribution to selected world markets will follow later in 2022. A bottle will cost £80/ $105 US.

Our tasting notes

The colour is pale gold and the nose is full of youthful peat smoke. This has an ashy, woody and slightly mineralic quality. Underneath are aromas of vanilla, green apple and white chocolate along with a distinct whiff of malted cereals and biscuits. There are also suggestions of raisin and lemon zest.

On the palate this whisky has a pronounced freshness and vibrancy to it. The expressive and youthful peat smoke dominates and has a slightly acrid edge to it - think of bonfire ash and embers, charcoal and hints of dried seaweed, iodine and bitumen. The malted cereals and biscuit notes from the nose are also strong. These add to the earthy feel and give a pleasant bittersweet note.

It takes a little time for other elements to battle through. First to appear is green fruit (think of apple and pear especially), creamy vanilla and a hint of dessicated coconut. Then a blob of honey, some white chocolate, raisins and sultana with a late twist of lemon zest.

The finish is long, warm and drying. Having battled their way through the smoke, the fruity and sweet notes fade rapidly. This leaves the earthy cereals and gripping peat smoke to dominate again. A late pinch of cinnamon, cocoa and powdered ginger warm things further.

What's the verdict?

It is always interesting to sample new things from a distillery, especially when it is in a style that they are not necessarily known for. The Bladnoch Alinta is good and joins a couple of other Lowland peated single malts that have been released in recent years.

It is clearly youthful so it will be intriguing to see how the smokiness settles with more time. As it stands now the whisky is expressive, bold and a little brash. If you are a fan of smoky whiskies and want to try something different, then definitely search the Alinta out.

Here is the round-up of the news from this last week ...

________

Bladnoch
The Lowland distillery of Bladnoch has announced the latest addition to its Classic Collection core range - the Bladnoch Alinta. It is the first known peated expression in the distillery's history. The spirit was distilled from peated malt and is produced for just a short period each year. This was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill ex-Pedro Ximenez casks. The casks were hand selected and married together by Dr. Nick Savage, the Master Distiller at Bladnoch. Glenallachie

The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced three new whiskies that will form part of their expanded Virgin Oak Series. Each of the three bottlings has undergone a finishing period in a different style of oak and the series is designed to explore how different oak species from around the world influence the single malt. The three bottlings are the Glenallachie 10 years old Chinquapin Virgin Oak Finish, 10 years old French Virgin Oak Finish and 15 years old Scottish Oak Finish.

In each case the whisky has initially been matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to its finishing cask - these have been hand selected by Billy Walker, Master Distiller at Glenallachie. The 10 years old Chinquapin Virgin Oak Finish features casks made from chinquapin oak, a sub species of American oak found in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The 10 years old French Virgin Oak Finish uses oak from the Haute-Garonne region of France, close to the Pyrenees.

The 15 years old Scottish Virgin Oak Finish uses Sessile oak sourced from the west coast of Scotland. It is rarely used for whisky barrels due its slow growing nature and tendency to produce knots in the wood. This is one of the first ever releases by any distillery to feature Scottish oak. All three new whiskies are bottled at 48% ABV and are non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The two 10 year olds will retail for £62/ $82 US each, and the 15 years old will cost £175/ $230 US.

Kentucky Owl

The premium American bourbon brand of Kentucky Owl has launched The Wiseman expression into the UK for the first time. The whiskey has been created by John Rhea, the Master Blender of Kentucky Owl. It is a blend of four Kentucky-sourced bourbons - two four year olds (one with high wheat content and one with high rye), a 5.5 year old and an 8.5 year old. The Wiseman forms part of a larger range that is currently available in the USA. It is bottled at 45.4% ABV and will be available in selected spirits retailers and via Amazon in the UK. A bottle will cost £60. Plans for the Kentucky Owl distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky are also being drawn up.
