Corazón Tequila is thrilled to announce one of its most extensive Expresiones del Corazón Collections to date. Showcasing the extraordinary partnership between Casa San Matías, Mexico’s fourth oldest tequila distillery, and Buffalo Trace, the World’s Most Award-Winning Distillery, the 2023 Collection features six premium tequilas, including two brand new añejos aged in French Oak and ex-Weller 12 Year Old Bourbon barrels. In addition, the award-winning Artisanal Blanco and William Larue Weller, George T. Stagg and Sazerac 18 Year Old Rye Añejo Tequilas return as part of this year’s Collection.

Produced in limited-quantities, Expresiones del Corazón celebrates excellence in distillation, aging and experimentation by marrying Corazón’s premium tequila with barrels that once held some of the world’s most-coveted whiskeys produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

·       Corazón Weller 12 Añejo Tequila (NEW): matured for 26 months in ex-Weller 12 Kentucky Straight Bourbon barrels, where some of the finest bourbon at Buffalo Trace Distillery rested for 12 years, this añejo is moderately sweet with heavily cooked agave, toasted vanilla and a silky-yet-intense oak finish.

·       Corazón French Oak Añejo Tequila (NEW): aged for at least 13 months in French oak barrels that formerly aged Old Charter Oak French Oak bourbon, the resulting liquid offers aromas of rich oak and vanilla and a smooth and lightly-sweet taste offering hints of cooked agave, apple and caramel.

·       Corazón Sazerac Rye 18 Añejo Tequila: 24 months of aging in barrels that formerly held Sazerac Rye for 18 years has produced a moderately sweet tequila with strong hints of fresh fruit met with notes of oak, caramel, almond and cinnamon.

·       Corazón George T. Stagg Añejo Tequila: 22 months of maturation in barrels that previously aged the high-proof George T. Stagg bourbon has resulted in salted caramel flavors that burst on the tongue followed by charred pineapple that slowly transforms to tobacco, leaving a sweet-yet-smoky lingering flavor.

·       Corazón William Larue Weller Añejo Tequila: 15 months of aging in barrels that formerly held this beloved wheated bourbon has created a harmoniously smooth and dense tequila with lightly-sweet undertones.  The taster is greeted with aromas of wood, caramel and almond, then met with notes of chocolate, intense vanilla, nut, eucalyptus and chamomile.

·       Corazón Artisanal Small Batch Blanco Tequila: this premium blanco tequila is the extraordinary base spirit created by the artisans at Casa San Matias specifically for the Expresiones del Corazón Collection. Utilizing the finest estate-grown agave with a higher sugar content and artisanal distillation techniques, the result is a refined liquid with a sweet, gentle flavor and powerful notes of cooked agave intertwined with hints of citrus and green apple.

“Our dedication to exploring the unique liquid that emerges from the aging process drives our experimentation with new barrels,” says Rocio Rodriguez Torres, Master Distiller at Corazón Tequila. “We are thrilled to embark on this flavor adventure utilizing the exceptional barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery, allowing us to expand the tequila landscape. Offering aficionados an entirely new experience, these tequilas unveil a symphony of flavors reminiscent of the liquid that graced the barrels before them.”

Crafted from the finest blue agave grown in the Los Altos region of Jalisco using time-honored methods, the agave hearts used for Corazón Tequila are slow cooked in stone ovens and then pressed, fermented and distilled with expert care at the renowned Casa San Matías Distillery. Careful maturation in Buffalo Trace’s best seasoned whiskey barrels for varying lengths results in an aged tequila that exemplifies the finest artistry in Mexican and American spirits making.

The Expresiones del Corazón line has garnered several top awards over the years for various limited release expressions. Top distinctions received for expressions returning to this year’s Collection include a Gold medal for Corazón William Larue Weller Añejo at the 2022 International Spirits Challenge, Gold medal for Corazón Artisanal Blanco at the 2022 TAG Global Spirits Awards, and Silver medals for Corazón Artisanal Blanco and Corazón George T. Stagg Añejo Tequila at the 2022 International Wine & Spirits Competition.

PRICING & AVAILABILITY: Each tequila is sold separately in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection’s iconic glass bottle with a cork stopper and handwritten label specifying the barrel, bottle number and date of bottling. The Expresiones del Corazón 2023 Collection is now available in limited quantities at select retailers, bars and restaurants across the United States. The suggested retail price for the Artisanal Blanco is $59.99; the William Larue Weller, Weller 12, French Oak, George T. Stagg and Sazerac Rye 18 year Old Añejos are $79.99 each (750ml; taxes and fees vary by market.) All six tequilas are 80 proof. The 128-year-old family-owned independent bottler stunned the whisky world this week with news that it will stop sourcing new make spirit from other distillers starting next year. Instead, Gordon & MacPhail will focus on single malts from its two distilleries, Benromach and The Cairn in the future. With decades of maturing whisky on hand, the change won’t be felt for at least 12 to 15 years and Gordon & MacPhail will continue bottling older whiskies for decades to come. We’ll discuss the change in philosophy with G&M managing director Ewen Mackintosh on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. On Behind the Label, we’ll celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Excise Act of 1823, which directly led to today’s Scotch Whisky industry, and we’ll have tasting notes for whiskies from Bunnahabhain, Lost Lantern, and Dràm Mòr, too.

I know what you must be thinking: “this is a whiskey media site, so why are they reviewing tequila?” Because we touch on all things connected to whiskey, including other types of liquor aged in old whiskey barrels. Take, for example, this recent review of a rye barrel-aged red wine.

Storywood is the creation of Scotland-born, Texas-raised Michael Ballantyne, and its shtick is sourcing tequila and aging it in various types of used casks. The case we are looking at here is a Reposado, which means the tequila has been aged for up to one year. In this case, that is seven months in a cask of undisclosed type (barrel? hogshead?) that was previously used to age an undisclosed Speyside malt whisky.

Keeping in mind that this is a whiskey-first website, I’ve chosen to approach this tequila in two different ways. One is to try it in a riff on a classic whiskey cocktail. For that, I made an Old Fashioned, using nectarines instead of the usual orange slices. We’ll see how a Speyside Scotch-aged tequila instead of bourbon in an Old Fashioned riff. The second is to take a sip of the tequila straight, and then another sip with chili salt and lime.

The Tequila
The Scotch-aged tequila took this into an unexpected direction, and I’m glad the riff I used recommended using nectarines. The modest note of honey complimented the nectarine slices in my drink well, and the light vanilla note was welcome and familiar. But the tequila gave the cocktail a sharp, earthy character, that is quite unlike what one expects from an Old Fashioned, transforming an entire side of a familiar coin.

As for taking the tequila straight, this one is an odd duck. Being a Reposado, and aged in an ex-Speyside malt barrel at that, it has one foot in a generic whisky and one foot in earthy agave. It therefore doesn’t need the salt and lime wedge the way a Blanco does, but at the same time, I can’t quite endorse the notion of sipping on it neat. It might make a good highball, though, done up with a lime wedge, soda and ice. But having already done one riff with the stuff, taking it in that direction must wait for my next trial.

The Price
Expect to pay about $50 for this bottle.

Mince pies, cake, roast turkey, port, Buck’s Fizz, roast potatoes, Champagne… December brings with it a host of delicious, indulgent treats. I can’t remember the last Christmas that didn’t end in me being so full that I questioned my sanity at having taken a third helping of roast potatoes before I had pudding, but I digress. It makes sense, then, to exercise a little restraint once the new year rolls around.

Many of us will be starting off the year by cutting all alcohol from our diets for 31 days and providing our livers with a bit of respite, but there are some who choose to follow the old ‘everything in moderation’ method instead. Not completely cutting anything out of our lives, but not overindulging either, which is why I’ve tracked down some of the best low-ABV cocktails to enjoy this year.

Grapefruit SpirtZ – Spritz it up

Most famous for its regular appearance in beer gardens across the country during summer, the classic Aperol spritz is a tasty cocktail that’s easy to make, and even easy to add flair to. This grapefruit spritzer is a refreshing twist on this timeless low-abv cocktail.

Ingredients

135ml grapefruit juice
15ml Aperol
225ml tonic water
Grapefruit slices for garnish.

Method

Fill a glass with ice, add the grapefruit juice and Aperol then fill to the top with tonic water, add a slice of grapefruit to garnish and enjoy!

Americano – Bittersweet Symphony

Low-ABV cocktails don’t have to compromise on flavour or sophistication and the Americano is proof of this. Made with both Campari and sweet vermouth, this bittersweet, aromatic cocktail is perfect for happy hour, or accompanying a creamy pasta dish, such as carbonara.

Americano Cocktail

Ingredients

45ml Campari
45ml sweet vermouth
225ml Club Soda

Method

Add Campari and sweet vermouth to a highball glass before filling the glass with ice, then top up with club soda, stir and enjoy.

Mimosa – Light and bubbly

A staple at brunch, the Mimosa is a well-known low-ABV cocktail with just two ingredients – Champagne and orange juice. But I like to be different (and grew up in an orange-free home), so here is a pomegranate-based version of the classic Champagne cocktail.

Ingredients

125ml Champagne
15ml pomegranate juice
1 teaspoon pomegranate seeds to garnish

Method

Pour the Champagne into a flute, then top up with pomegranate juice, garnish with pomegranate seeds and enjoy!

Floppy Disk – Retro Fun

Some of you may remember floppy disks, the predecessor to the memory stick that was immortalised in the save symbol on Microsoft. This next cocktail is a version of Jenner Cormier’s low-abv cocktail of the same name, from Bar Kismet in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Ingredients

225ml grapefruit juice
225ml sparkling water
15ml Cynar
15ml dry curacao
10ml mezcal
Grapefruit slice to garnish

Method

Add all ingredients except sparkling water in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well and strain into a chilled glass. Top with sparkling water and garnish with a slice of grapefruit
