Speyside is much more than a riverside village of the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland. The region is renowned for its spirits and tastes and produces the best whiskies worldwide. It has become synonymous with single malt Scotch whiskies.
Speyside is also home to the world’s two best-selling single malt whiskies, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich.
The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, that was founded in 1822 and produces a whiskey of the same name and perseverance in whisky making. The distillery produces single malt Scotch whisky. It also forms part of the 3-day whisky tour from Edinburg.
The Glenfiddich Distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown, Scotland, in the glen of the River Fiddich. William Grant & Sons Ltd was formed by Grant, his seven sons, and two daughters, and have been producing single malt whisky ever since.
There are many other distilleries located on the border of this river, and they have all but become famous producers of single malt whiskies and other bourbon and gin tastes. They make the news every day and are followed by tons of consumers, media, and critics worldwide.
Just this week, Speyside distillery, GlenAllachie launched the third batch of its oldest whisky: a 30-year-old, cask strength single malt.
As we try to fathom the mystery and magic that makes the region so famous and loved, we conclude many folktales and myths, such as the popular river mermaid that blesses the whisky casks just as they roll out. Nonetheless, we know for sure, that the true magic lies in the years of hard work and master distilling.
