Experiments in Whisky (Episode 1001: April 23, 2023)

Dr. Bill Lumsden has been experimenting at both Ardbeg and Glenmorangie distilleries. His latest Ardbeg release, Heavy Vapours, involved taking part of the distilling system out of the picture just because he wanted to see what would happen if he did. At Glenmorangie, he has a whole year’s worth of projects for his experimental Lighthouse distillery. We’ll catch up with whisky’s mad scientist on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Scotland’s controversial alcohol marketing restrictions have been sent back to the drawing board, while the equally controversial deposit return scheme for bottles has been pushed back to next March. A fantastic old Imperial with lots of dusty and woody sugars and oodles of fruit sweetness in this one. Befitting its age this becomes drying and leathery with some great tannins too. I suspect the rechar HH was a finish here as it would have been unusual to have been the initial cask but it has worked wonders on rejuvenating this spirit. 91/100

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Here is the round-up of the news from this last week ...

________

Kingsbarns
The family-owned Kingsbarns distillery in Fife has released the final bottles of its Distillery Reserve 2021 Edition for sale. The annual release was created by Isabel Wemyss, the Production Director at Kingsbarns. She hand-selected first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and first-fill STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) ex-red wine barriques, which were married together in a ration of 60% to 40% respectively. This was then bottled at the natural cask strength of 61.8% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Bottles will only be available from the brand website - www.kingsbarnsdistillery.com or the distillery shop. The price will be £65.

Lochlea
The independent Lowland farm distillery of Lochlea has announced the first whisky in a planned new series of limited edition seasonal bottlings - the Lochlea Sowing Edition. It is just the second ever single malt to be released by the distillery. Three further whiskies will be in the series and these will appear throughout 2022 as the seasons change. The whisky was made using only barley grown on Lochlea Farm and water from an onsite source.

The Lochlea Sowing Edition has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 48% ABV. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The limited edition will be available in selected whisky retailers in the UK and ten export markets. A bottle will cost £50.

"Sowing Edition is a perfect springtime whisky with a fruity sweetness lasting to the finish. Made from barley grown within sight of the distillery, this whisky is an Ayrshire dram through and through.”
John Campbell / Master Blender & Production Director at Lochlea.

Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The SMWS have announced their 150th distillery and details of the first bottling from the distillery. As with all SMWS releases, the actual distillery name is not revealed but has a number allocated. Bottling 150.1 is from a distillery in the south west of Ireland and has been titled Let's Go West! It is exclusive to SMWS members via a ballot and went on sale yesterday (St. Patrick's Day/ March 17). The whiskey fits into the Society's 'Spicy & Sweet' category and will cost £75 per bottle.

"Choosing an Irish distillery for our landmark 150th bottling truly shows the adventurous spirit of the Society – celebrating our vibrant spirit no matter its source. Having bottled from distilleries way beyond our own shores, we continue to explore a world beyond single cask."
Kai Ivalo / Spirits Director at the SMWS.
