Glenmorangie Sonoma-Cutrer Reserve 25 Years

Though we know from multiple tastings and some of the Glenmo experiments that the Glenmo spirit works incredibly well with wine casks. So maybe, just maybe, this will be the Sonoma-Cutrer redemption my palate has been looking for. Though this will definitely be putting the spirit and the balance to the test because the finishing time on this whiskey was a decade and a half.

Let’s get to drinkin’!

Glenmorangie Sonoma-Cutrer Reserve 25 Years Tasting Notes

EYE
Lightly orange honey

NOSE
Malt, grapefruit peels, spice, grapey sweetness, earth, cocoa and vanilla cake and Necco

Aroma is absurdly light, almost nothing there till water is added, but even then it remains muted.

PALATE
Malty, cocoa, dried fruit, nuts, grapey sweetness and some baking spice with hints of dried apricots, Necco, chalk and plastic.

Like the aroma, it’s super light and tight and I didn’t get much till I added some water, and even then everything it yielded was light. Not a bold whisky.

FINISH
Med-short -> Malty dried fruit and spice.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Ok balance, medium body and a soft lightly oiled feel.

Glenmorangie Sonoma-Cutrer Reserve 25 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

Before today, I’ve had one other whiskey finished in Sonoma-Cutrer barrels and I didn’t really enjoy it… at all. However, I’ve also had two bottles of Sonoma-Cutrer: one of their standard Pinot Noir and their Pinot Noir aged in Woodford Reserve barrels. I liked the standard Pinot more, but both were better than any of the whiskies I’ve had finished in their barrels… till now

The Glenmorangie Sonoma-Cutrer Reserve 25 Years is good, better than either of the Sonoma finished bourbons I’ve had, but it’s incredibly light. Everything is coming through in hints and whispers and I don’t feel like I’m really getting even the level of depth I got out of the Quarter Century. I’m not upset by the Glenmorangie Sonoma-Cutrer Reserve 25 Years, just wished I got more out of this glass.

SCORE: 3.5/5 (tasty, worth checking out ~ B | 83-86) – Thanks to Travis for the sample

Glenmorangie 19 Years Finest Reserve Review

As you might be able to tell from the photo, the first taste, and rough notes, of this whisky came from a tasting (SCWC). The second and third tasting, and subsequent notes, came from the sample I was sent by a friend with a deep Glenmo collection when we chatted about setting up this mega-vertical.

Glenmorangie 19 Years Finest Reserve Review Tasting Notes

EYE
Golden honey

NOSE
Malty sweetness, Honey Nut Cheerios, dried orchard fruit, vanilla cake, citrus peels, oak and some bits of toffee and a light herbal touch with some baked goods… waffles?

Fruity, pastry sweet and a tad earthy with a lingering note that makes me think of malty Belgian waffles. No syrup.

PALATE
Malty sweetness, cereal grain sweetness, Honey Nut Cheerios, citrus peels, roasted notes, oak, honey and dried orchard fruit with marzipan-like and herbal touches and again that Belgian waffle hint.

It’s not a heavy note of waffles, but there is this continual “fringe note” of Belgian waffles that keeps coming up.

FINISH
Medium-long -> Dried orchard fruit, oak, HNC and…. waffles. With a touch of cinnamon.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well balanced, medium-full body and a warm soft feel.

Glenmorangie 19 Years Finest Reserve Review – Overall Thoughts and Score

I’m kind of enamored with this light waffle note, I feel like I just found Waldo. Setting aside that fascination and focusing on the dram at hand, it’s good. It’s a well-constructed, well-executed, fully ex-bourbon Glenmo aged for 19 years.

I’ve been sipping, analyzing and researching whisky for a decade and a half now. I’ve taken notes on over 2,500 whiskies and easily experienced another 600+ that I never took notes on. During this journey, I’ve had many moments where I favor different styles, but one thing has remained a favorite: ex-Bourbon Scotch.

It sounds generic on the surface, but the more I taste the more I enjoy getting at the core profile of a distillery and that’s really found in ex-Bourbon casks. I love sherry, port, Madeira, etc. but the older I get, and the more I experience I have, the more I enjoy coming back to well-crafted ex-bourbon whiskies like this Glenmorangie 19 Years Finest Reserve. It’s just plain good.

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89) – Thanks to Travis for the sample

James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Bourbon Review

When we’re talking about sourced TN Whiskey/Bourbon, there are really only two distilleries it could come from and one, George Dickel, has a very distinct character. The other, the Tennessee Distilling Group, is basically the MGP of TN and contract distills/sources out for a LOT of brands. Basically, if it doesn’t taste like Dickel, you can be 99% sure it came from TDG.

So which one does this James Ownby taste like? Let’s get to drinkin’ and find out.

James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Bourbon Tasting Notes

EYE
Medium amber

NOSE
Caramel, oak, herbal notes and baking spice with a bit of vanilla, copper and dried fruit.

Smells quite nice. It isn’t heavy or deep, but all out pleasant.

PALATE
Caramel, watery wood (chewed up toothpick), dried corn, herbal, baking spice and bits of citrus peels, copper and dried fruit.

Not nearly as good as the aroma, but still fairly tasty despite coming through a bit raw and “toothpicky”.

FINISH
Medium -> Dried corn, vanilla, wood and a bit of spice and minerality.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Ok balance, medium body and a slightly tannic, lightly dry feel.

James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Bourbon – Overall Thoughts and Score

After tasting this I’m pretty sure this came from TDG and it’s just ok. The worst part is the “oak”. It’s so weird, it reminds of chewing on a toothpick till it’s just a collection of mushy fibers… and that’s not great. Yes, there are other notes in there that are good, but that weird, watery, somewhat crafty, woody quality is distracting and I have a hard time settling into the whiskey and enjoying it.

I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either. It feels… experimental. It doesn’t quite feel finished, or done, more like a product in progress, and if that’s the case, it’s not a bad start. Actually quite a good start, but if it’s the end product… meh. For me, the James Ownby Reserve Tennessee Bourbon is a bit of a miss.

SCORE: 2.5/5 (average, drinkable, possible minor flaws ~ C+ | 77-79)

Drouin Reserve Des Fiefs

Superb, creamy textured and vibrantly fruity this has something of a curd or yoghurty nature and the youth comes through as banana milkshake (estery and creamy). A great insight into Drouin’s base spirit nature. 84/100
