Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. Please Note - there will be no Inbox next week (September 15, 2023) as we are away on a much needed holiday. Anyway, here is the round-up of the news from this week.

________

Highland Park

The Highland Park distillery from the Orkney islands has announced a new bottling to enter its Single Cask Series - the Highland Park London Edition No.1. The new whisky is an 18 Years Old single malt that has been matured in a single re-fill European oak ex-sherry cask. The cask was filled in 2002 and has been maturing on Orkney until bottling. It was hand selected by Gordon Motion, the Master Whisky Maker at Highland Park. The cask has yielded just 632 bottles and these will be available in UK specialist whisky retailers from late September. A bottle will cost £390.

"Some of our most outstanding single cask bottlings come from refill casks, as they have often previously held whisky for only a short period of time, so have much to give in subsequent maturation."
Gordon Motion.

Lagavulin

The Islay distillery of Lagavulin is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Islay Jazz Festival with a new limited edition bottling for this year's event, which runs from 15-19 September. The Lagavulin Jazz 15 Years Old has been finished in ex-Oloroso sherry casks and will only be available from the distillery shop on a first come, first served basis.

The festival, which is organised by Jazz Scotland and the Islay Arts Foundation, will feature some of Scotland's best known jazz artists including Graeme Stephen and Fergus McCreadie. The Lagavulin Jazz 15 Years Old is bottled at the natural cask strength of 53.9% ABV and is limited to just 3,000 bottles. These will be available until sold out and will cost £250 each.

"To celebrate the festival we have created an expression of Lagavulin that is influenced by the thriving Spanish jazz scene by finishing our whisky in Oloroso sherry casks. The result is an exceptional bottling that introduces sweet, red-fruity notes to Lagavulin’s signature smoke."
Jordan Paisley / Distillery Manager at Lagavulin.

Powers

The Irish whiskey brand of Powers has announced a new permanent expression for its core range - the Powers John's Lane Cask Strength. The new whiskey has been developed to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the launch of the original Powers John's Lane and as a result is bottled at 12 years of age. It is planned to be released in annual batches.

The inaugural 2023 edition pays homage to the John's Lane distillery in Dublin where Powers was originally distilled and matured. It is now produced at the Midleton distillery in Co. Cork. The Powers John's Lane Cask Strength 2023 Edition is bottled at 57.8% ABV and will go on general release from October 2. It will initially be available in Ireland, the UK and Dublin airport. A bottle will cost €90.

Tomatin

The Highland distillery of Tomatin has revealed a new series of whiskies and details of the trio of bottlings. The Italian Collection celebrates the distillery's long history of importing Italian wine casks and its success in the Italian market.  Each of the three whiskies follows the same path - 10 years of maturation in American oak ex-bourbon casks before being tranferred for a two year finish in a different Italian wine barrel.

The Amarone Edition 12 Years Old uses casks sourced from the Veneto region, the Barolo Edition 12 years Old features casks from the Piedmont region and the Marsala Edition 12 Years Old sees the whisky finished in casks from a Marsala winery in Sicily. They are all bottled at 46% ABV and are both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Italian Collection is available now from the Tomatin website and selected specialist whisky retailers worldwide. A bottle will cost £70.

This new addition to the Powers core range is the first ever Irish whiskey to be made from 100% Irish rye. The release comes following trials at the Midleton distillery in Co. Cork, where Powers is distilled and matured alongside other well know brands such as Jameson and Redbreast. It has used an archive recipe uncovered by Carol Quinn, the Senior Achivist at Irish Distillers. As part of the trials Irish Distillers commissioned the planting of rye crops at Cooney Furlong Farm in Co. Wexford. This was chosen due to its proximity to the ancestral home of the Powers family - Edermine House.

Powers is one of best known and biggest selling names in Irish whiskey and has a rich heritage. The Powers distillery was founded in 1791 by James Power in Dublin. James' son John later joined as distillery manager and in 1809 the name was changed to John Power & Son. Powers were one of the first distilleries to follow the now-traditional Irish practice of triple distillation.

They were also one of the first in the world to sell in single bottles to customers, rather than by the cask. This began in the 1860s and the distillery remained in the Power family until 1966. Then John Power & Son became founding members of Irish Distillers alongside Cork Distilling Company and John Jameson & Sons. They rebuilt the Midleton distillery to serve their needs and it remains the largest in Ireland with an annual capacity of nearly 30 million litres.

Powers Irish Rye is bottled at 43.2% ABV and will be initially released through specialist retailers in selected markets including Ireland, the UK and the USA. It will also be available in Dublin Airport and via www.powerswhiskey.com before seeing a wider world release. A bottle will cost €40/ £32/ $US32.

Our tasting notes

The whiskey is bright gold in colour and the nose is deliciously sweet and spicy. Aromas of golden syrup, toffee and milk chocolate mingle with earthy cereals and white pepper. There is also a distinct aroma of maraschino cocktail cherries and a hint of gingerbread.

On the palate this whiskey continues its intriguing mix of sweet vs. spice. The golden syrup and toffee lead the way alongside the expressive maraschino cherry note. The cherry adds a luscious juiciness to proceedings. Then comes some gripping oak spice - think of vanilla with some charred and toasted woodiness thrown in.

Underneath are hints of bitter orange oil, clove and white pepper. It is now less peppery than the nose initially suggested. Further background notes of earthy cereals, stewed apple and banana bread loaf add depth and complexity. A final hit of drying woodiness and warming gingerbread round things off nicely.

The finish begins sweetly but becomes spicier and more drying with time. The golden syrup, chocolate and luscious fruitiness fade to give an earthier and robust feel. The cereals and warming peppery spices come to the fore before before the drying oak sweeps in right at the end.

What's the verdict?

The Powers Irish Rye is delicious and surely opens up a whole new category of Irish whiskey. The balance between the sweetness and earthy spiciness is exquisite. Powers may be the first to release a 100% Irish rye whiskey, but they certainly will not be the last. Watch this space.

The result is a softer version of an American or Canadian rye that is lovely when sipped neat. It would also be excellent in a traditional rye cocktail such as a Manhattan. Well done to Irish Distillers for making this experiment work and for keeping the price at an affordable level.

Bruichladdich
The Islay distillery of Bruichladdich has announced the latest release of its super peated Octomore expression - the Octomore 13.4. The new whisky completes the 13th edition of the popular series. The spirit was made using heavily peated Concerto barley grown in Scotland and has been matured for five years in first-fill ex-bourbon and American virgin oak casks. It is bottled at the natural cask strength of 61.6% ABV and registers a peating level of 137.3 PPM. Octomore 13.4 is a distillery exclusive and is only available at the distillery shop and via the Bruichladdich website. The exact number of bottles was not revealed but each will cost £170.

"Completing the Octomore 13 series, the 13.4 edition once more demonstrates the delicate balance of intense peat smoke with our elegant signature style. The maturation profile combined with strong peat levels and cask strength has resulted in a complex single malt."
Adam Hannett / Head Distiller at Bruichladdich.
