Looking for a carnival in a bottle? Penelope Rio is set to deliver. Arriving on shelf in March, Penelope Rio will be available at a suggested retail price of $89.99 per 750-ml bottle. This year's installment will have a limited allocation of 5,000 (6-in) cases.

Inspired by the joy of Brazil, Rio delights the senses with a double cask finish of American honey and Amburana, a Brazilian hardwood. The two finishes combine to deliver a rich and sweet experience with surprising depth.

"Our latest Rio release is a party in a bottle – the finishes complement each other so well, resulting in a fun and surprising mix of flavors," said Michael Paladini, founder of Penelope Bourbon. "This year's release delivers a dessert sweetness combined with a nice baking spice on the finish. It's a fantastic and different combination of rich and sweet, with depth."

The bourbon features an aroma of sweet honey coupled with notes of cinnamon rolls; a rich body with notes of gingerbread, honey, nectar and baking spice; and a savory finish highlighted by subtle notes of honey and spice. Bottled at 98 proof, Rio's blended four-grain mash bill consists of 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye and 3% malted barley.

"Penelope Rio is one of the more complex finishes we release," said Daniel Polise, founder and master blender of Penelope Bourbon. "We're really happy with how this one turned out, and we can't wait to see it on the shelf."

Last year's Penelope Rio release received 92 points from Whisky Advocate. It is part of the company's Cooper Series, which takes Penelope straight whiskeys on a world tour. The other members of the series include Tokaji Cask Finish, Rosé Cask Finish and Valencia. A product locator for the Penelope family of bourbons can be found here.

My Take

I haven't had regular Penelope so I'm not ready to venture into their experimental releases. I like the idea of trying new combinations of barrel aging, but I would need to be more familiar with the brand before I dropped $90 on an unknown.

MGP has continued their buying spree with the acquisition of Penelope Bourbon LLC for a jaw dropping $105 million dollars (up to a maximum cash payout of $110.8 million measured through December 31, 2025 if certain performance conditions are met). For those unaware (including myself), Penelope Bourbon LLC was founded in 2018 and was family and founder-owned and operated.

David Colo, president and CEO of MGP Ingredients says:
We are excited to welcome Penelope as part of our expanding premium-plus brand portfolio. This acquisition aligns well with our premiumization strategy and our focus on growing high potential, high margin brands. Penelope is an excellent addition to our Branded Spirits portfolio as we look to expand its availability throughout our national distribution platform. We are enthusiastic about this acquisition and its ability to further our participation in the growing American Whiskey category while delivering meaningful long-term growth.
My Take

Absolutely amazing that I don't have a bourbon company of my own to sell for obscene amounts of money. I've only written one article about Penelope in the entire time I've had the blog so for them to be able to fetch $105 million is impressive. I've never had Penelope but selling to MGP should open up their distribution network to get it in more places. Alas, if anyone wants to buy this site for upwards of $100 million, hit me up on the contact link on the front page.
