Irish whiskey producer, Waterford Distillery, has released a pair of heavily peated single malts – Waterford Peated: Lacken and Waterford Peated: Woodbrook – with barley from Lacken and Woodbrook farms.

Waterford Peated: Lacken was bottled at 57 PPM (phenol parts per million) while Waterford Peated: Woodbrook was bottled at 74 PPM.

Waterford Peated: Lacken is said to offer notes of apple, brine, campfire, creosote, driftwood, oyster shells and peach.

Waterford Peated: Woodbrook is said to offer notes of beeswax, bonfire, crème brûlée, lemon and shortbread.

Both Waterford Peated: Lacken and Waterford Peated: Woodbrook are being made available at the official distillery website [waterfordwhisky.com] for $110 per bottle.

Bruichladdich Distillery has released Octomore 14 – their annual trio of heavily-peated single malts – consisting of the Octomore 14.1, 14.2 and 14.3 – which have been released since 2008. All three Bruichladdich Octomore single malts are matured for five years, bottled ‘close to cask strength’ and are always heavily peated [to a whopping 309 PPM, making them the most heavily peated whiskies in the world].

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.1 originates from 100% Scottish barley and malted to 128.9 PPM (phenol parts per million), matured in first-fill ex-American whiskey casks, bottled at 59.6% alcohol by volume [119.2 proof] and is said to offer notes of caramel, citrus and vanilla along with the usual peat smoke. Bruichladdich Octomore 14.1 is being made available for $175 per bottle.

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.2 is also from 100% Scottish barley and malted to 128.9 PPM, but was matured in a combination of Oloroso sherry and Amarone wine casks, bottled at 57.7% alcohol by volume [115.4 proof] and is said to offer notes of coffee, fruitcake and red currants to go along with its peat smoke. Bruichladdich Octomore 14.2 is being made available for $195 per bottle.

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.3 comes from locally grown barley, was malted to 214.2 PPM, matured in both ex-bourbon casks along with second-fill wine casks and bottled at 61.4% alcohol by volume [122.8 proof] and is said to offer notes of toffee and vanilla with its peat smoke. Bruichladdich Octomore 14.3 is being made available for $245 per bottle.

Lowland distillery Lochlea has released Ploughing Edition – their first peated single malt. Speyside distillery, The GlenAllachie, has added a four-year-old peated single malt to their Past, The Present & Future Series, to honor master blender Billy Walker.

The GlenAllachie Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Future Edition 4-Year-Old Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky was matured in former rye and bourbon barrels, as well as in virgin oak casks, made with mainland peat from St Fergus, Scotland, bottled at a cask strength of 60.2% alcohol by volume [120.4 proof] and is said to contain notes of apple, cinnamon and chocolate-covered hazelnuts.

Only 10,000 bottles of The GlenAllachie Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Future Edition 4-Year-Old Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky are being made available for $90 per bottle.

Giant spirits conglomo Pernod Ricard has released a set of seven single cask editions they are calling the Secret Speyside collection for global travel retail venues – the seven whiskies originate from four Speyside distilleries – Braes of The Glenlivet distillery, Caperdonich, Longmorn and Glen Keith – and are aged between 21 and 27 years.

All seven whiskies have been matured in seven separate first-fill American oak casks.

The Braes of The Glenlivet 1992 is being made exclusively available to the Dubai travel retail venue for $990 per bottle. The Caperdonich Peated 1996 will be exclusive to the Frankfurt, Germany travel retail venue for $1,050 per bottle while the Caperdonich Unpeated 1996 will be exclusive to the Heathrow, London travel retail venue [also for $1,050 per bottle]. The Glen Keith 1998 will be exclusive to the Shanghai, China travel retail venue for $450 per bottle while the Glen Keith 1994 will be made exclusive to the Lagardère, Hong Kong travel retail venue for $760 per bottle. Last but not least, the Longmorn 1998 will be made exclusive to the Lotte, Singapore travel retail venue for $480 per bottle and the Longmorn 1995 will be made exclusive to the Everrich, Taiwan travel retail venue for $800 per bottle.

Seattle-based Copperworks Distilling has released Copperworks Peated Cask American Single Malt Whiskey Release 043 finished 331 bottles of a peated cask single malt, finished in an Ardbeg Scotch whisky barrel.

Copperworks Peated Cask American Single Malt Whiskey Release 043 was matured for three years in a charred new American oak barrel then finished for a single year in an Ardbeg Scotch whisky cask before being bottled at 50% alcohol by volume [100 proof] and is said to contain notes of apple, blackberry smoke and vanilla.

Only 331 bottles of Copperworks Peated Cask American Single Malt Whiskey Release 043 are being made available for $75 per 750ml bottle.

The House of Suntory-owned Yamazaki, the darling of the whisky world a few years ago before a supply shortage followed by a global pandemic severely curtailed their output, has resurfaced and revealed a limited edition Yamazaki Japanese single malt collection – Tsukuriwake Selection – featuring the four foundations of single malt production, mizunara cask-matured, peated malt, puncheon and Spanish oak cask-matured whiskies.

The new 2022 Yamazaki Limited Edition Tsukuriwake Selection [a Japanese word which means ‘artisanship through a diversity of making’] begins with Yamazaki Puncheon, comprised of malt whiskies aged in American oak puncheons and said to contain notes of acacia honey, butterscotch, green apple, pear and vanilla.

Yamazaki Peated Malt was made using heavily peated malted barley and is said to contain notes of citrus, pineapple and smoke.

Yamazaki Spanish Oak combines malt whiskies matured in oak casks from northern Spain and is said to contain notes of prunes, raisins and sun-dried tomatoes.

Yamazaki Mizunara – the uncontested star of the group – is matured in rare Japanese mizunara oak casks and is said to contain notes of cinnamon, custard and sandalwood.

The 2022 Yamazaki Limited Edition Tsukuriwake Selection were all bottled at 48% alcohol by volume [96 proof] and was originally released in Japan in 2020 and is now being made available in Australia, Austria, China, France, Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK and USA beginning in June 2022 for $450 per bottle – with the exception of the mizunara – which is being made available for $620 per bottle.
