Kilchoman
The Islay farm distillery of Kilchoman has announced details of its annual Loch Gorm limited edition bottling. As with previous editions of Loch Gorm, the 2023 Edition is matured entirely in ex-Oloroso sherry casks and remains the only such bottling by Kilchoman. The 2023 Edition is a vatting of just 22 casks, which were selected by Anthony Wills, the founder of Kilchoman. Eight were distilled and filled in 2013, six in 2014 and eight in 2015. These have created a batch of 18,000 bottles.

The Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2023 Edition is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The whisky will initially be available in the UK and then via specialist retailers in selected world markets shortly. A bottle will cost £80.

"Rather than dominating, Loch Gorm’s oloroso maturation works in harmony with the natural character of Kilchoman. The 2023 Edition has a fantastic spectrum of flavour."
Anthony Wills.

Oban
The west Highland distillery of Oban has announced the release of a distillery exclusive bottling - Oban Young Teddy. It is the second whisky in The Macleans Series, which honours the distilling legacy of the Maclean family and their association with Oban distillery. It follows Old Teddy, which was released in 2019 - this was dedicated to Old Teddy Maclean, their long-serving distillery manager who began working there in 1953. The new whisky is dedicated to his son, recently-retired Young Teddy Maclean, who joined in 1985. The legacy continues as Young Teddy's son, Derek Maclean, joined the distillery staff in 2017.

Oban Young Teddy is finished in ex-Oloroso and ex-Palo Cortado sherry casks and is bottled at 50.8% ABV. There are just 4,542 bottles and these will be exclusively available from the visitor centre shop at the distillery in Oban from Monday 20 March. A bottle will cost £195.

"This bottling is incredibly special to me and my family as we continue to build the Maclean’s legacy at the Oban distillery for generations to come. The result is this truly special whisky with rich, fruity flavours coming through. This is a gift to our distillery fans and visitors from our family to theirs."
Young Teddy Maclean.

Review / Kilchoman 100% Islay (2022 Edition)

This new whisky hails from the family-owned farm distillery of Kilchoman, which is on the famous whisky island of Islay. It is the 12th edition of their award-winning annual 100% Islay bottling, which uses barley grown on the family farm and local water from a nearby loch. This is then distilled, matured and bottled at the distillery. The new limited edition has been created from 35 casks - 29 ex-bourbon barrels and 6 ex-Oloroso sherry butts. The whiskies were all distilled in 2011, 2012 or 2013 and matured for a minimum of 8 years. Each cask was selected for the bottling by Kilchoman's founder Anthony Wills.

Kilchoman is one of Scotland's smaller single malt distilleries and is named after the local church parish. It is located on Rockside Farm on the remote west coast of the island of Islay. The first spirit was produced in June 2005 and the first single malt was released in November 2009. Kilchoman is independently owned and now has a production capacity of just over 350,000 litres a year, following a recent ambitious expansion of the facilities. It is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to grow some of their own barley and to have a traditional floor malting in operation.

The Kilchoman 100% Islay 2022 Edition is bottled at 50% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are 12,500 bottles in this year's batch and these will be available in specialist retailers in selected global markets. A bottle will cost £75.

Our tasting notes

The colour is golden yellow and the nose has initial earthy and ash-like aromas (imagine damp peat, moss and bonfire embers). Underneath are hints of green apple, vanilla and golden syrup. These sit alongside further aromas of malted biscuits, lemon zest and white chocolate, plus a pinch of cocoa powder and white pepper.

On the palate this whisky has a sweeter edge than the nose initially suggests. The peat smoke is soft and gentle with notes of damp moss and charcoal ash. These are complimented by something floral and heather-like, plus elegant leafy soil. Green apple and a hint of bitter green herbs come next, and these characteristics are quickly joined by some heather honey and golden syrup.

The sweetness evolves to include flapjack and chocolate coated cereal bars with a hint of dried fruit in the background. The growing maltiness adds to this biscuit-like quality. A twist of fresh lemon zest and hints of orange marmalade, milky cocoa and white pepper add further depth and complexity.

The finish is a touch on the short side and becomes a little hot and peppery. A lovely note of crystallised ginger comes through and rescues the situation, especially once the sweeter elements have faded away. The smoke becomes more ashy and drying with time.

What's the verdict?

This 12th release is another lovely offering from Kilchoman. The peat level of 20ppm (phenol parts per million) allows both the smokiness and other characteristics to shine and compliment each other superbly. The 100% Islay has become something of a cult classic and this whisky will just add to that. It is also interesting to see how Kilchoman's spirit is evolving as their spirit reaches increased age. The results are very promising.

Kichoman Feis Ile 2021 Review

Confession: I have never been to Feis Ile (the Islay whisky festival). That probably seems blasphemous to some of you who have hung around here long enough to know my affinity for the isle of Islay and proclivity for anything related. I have actually made a point of avoiding the island at festival time. I’m just not into fighting the crowds and queues, and I’ve discovered that I like being able to eat and sleep without stress. Yeah, yeah, I’m getting old and soft, I know it. But here we are, year C19-2, and I’m really curious to see what happens on the island when the calendar comes ’round to Feis Ile nowadays. Normally, Islay at festival time is like a hive of fury-whipped hornets, crawling all over each other for limited edition festival-only bottles, oversold tastings, and whatever bits of grub can be scrounged from overtaxed pubs and the island’s handful of killer eateries. As you can imagine, the island relies on that annual influx of tourism, so the last couple of years have undoubtedly cramped the financial well-being of more than a few of the Ileachs. Granted, things have opened up a bit now, but so far as I know, the situation is still nowhere near what it should be (and will be again!). And let’s face it, an online festival is no festival at all, fun as it may still be.

So, to commemorate the 2021 virtual Feis Ile, Anthony, Robin et al have released this special edition 8 year old. It’s a bit of a gentle giant, in my opinion, and sits close to what I actually now believe is Kilchoman’s wheelhouse: their Islay Barley range. For me it’s not necessarily about the barley provenance, but about the in-house floor maltings, which weigh in at less than half the peated ppm we’d expect in the more core expressions from Kilchoman. This softening of the phenols allows the sweetness of the distillate to sing just a wee bit louder. And it’s all the better for it.

Thanks to our mate and local agent/rock star Andy Dunn for donating this bottle to a KWM tasting. I was fortunate enough to have a wee nip before the bottle was drained. Lovely dram I hope to revisit at some point.

2 x Oloroso sherry butts (2011) and 6 x bourbon barrels (2012). Optic and Publican barley. 2,832 bottles. 56.3% abv

Tasting Notes

Nose: Chlorine. Lemon and lime. Pineapple. Swedish Berries. Orange. Ocean water, clay, and chalk or limestone. A lower level of peat smoke than I’d expected, so yeah…nose absolutely confirms in-house malt? Beautifully sweet and fruity. Cherry Coke Bottles candy. Brisket bark. Palate: Creamy licorice notes. Smoke. Salt. Red and black licorice, if bound up and chewed together. Greengage and gooseberry. Tiger Tiger ice cream. Melon Rind. More of that carry meat. Burnt rosemary. A nice oceanic salinity; almost like using three or four drops of salt water to reduce strength. Finish: Fruit skins. Plum. A hint of mezcal without heavy agave notes. Clean all the way through. 88.5/100

Here is the round-up of this week's news ...

________

Kilchoman

The family-owned Islay distillery of Kilchoman have announced details of their annual 100% Islay release. The 2021 bottling is the 11th whisky in the series. It is so named as every aspect of the whisky comes from Islay - the barley is grown on Kilchoman's own farm, the spirit is produced at their distillery, the casks are matured and bottling takes place there also. The first time anything leaves Islay is to go to retailers.

The 100% Islay 11th Edition has been created from pockets of maturing stock distilled in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Just 33 casks (26x ex-bourbon and 7x ex-Oloroso sherry) have been used. These have yielded just 12,000 bottles and these are released at 50% ABV. The whisky is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. It will be available in selected specialist retailers worldwide and bottles will cost £75/ $105 US each.

"Our older sherry butts were at their peek and we then tried a few bourbon barrels of a similar age. They were similar so the backbone of this edition came together very easily. Our bourbon barrels and oloroso butts are incredibly consistent and this combination works incredibly well."
Anthony Wills / Founder & Managing Director of Kilchoman.

Tomatin
The Highland distillery of Tomatin has revealed details of the fourth and final bottling in its French Collection. The Tomatin Cognac Edition is limited edition and bottled at 12 years of age carrying a 2008 vintage on the label. The maturation saw the first 10 years in American oak ex-bourbon casks before a final two year finishing period in ex-Cognac barrels. It follows the Monbazillac Edition, Sauternes Edition and Rivesaltes Edition.

The French Collection was designed to show the influence of different French wine and spirit casks on the same initial Tomatin spirit. The Tomatin Cognac Edition 2008 is bottled at 46% ABV and is available via the Tomatin website and selected specialist retailers in selected global markets. The exact number of bottles was not revealed in the press release, but each will cost £65/ $90 US.

"The fourth and final release from our French Collection is the jewel in the crown. This Cognac Edition, along with the rest of the collection, showcases our innovative dedication to the craft and excellence and is the perfect illustration of the art of comparative final maturation."
Graham Eunson / Master Distiller at Tomatin.

Kilchoman Sanaig (2020) Review

This one came as a bit of a surprise in my circles. Normally we don’t get so hung up on color that it becomes the primary speaking point, but let’s face it…this stuff is about four shades darker than previous releases. It looks like medium roast coffee mixed with cherry cola. The usual light-to-dark color spectrum of the big three Kilchoman expressions – Machir Bay, then Sanaig, then Loch Gorm – was turned on its head with the arrival of this 2020 edition of Sanaig. It scrambled the wee rainbow and threw the darkest of ’em all smack dab in the middle of the trio. Quite frankly, the hue shames the fully-sherried Loch Gorm. And while Sanaig may be a marriage of ex-bourbon (30%) and ex-oloroso casks (70%), it’s unquestionably the sherry that stands center stage here. You’ll get some of the spice from those bourbon barrels, but the more subtle notes – coconut, vanilla, etc – are lost beneath the deeper wash of Oloroso.

Expect big spice, big dried fruit tunes and bucketloads of savory, charry, goodness. Oh, and quality. You’ll find it here in spades.

Sanaig is named for a rocky little cove off the northern coast of Islay where the cold, harsh waves of the Atlantic dash themselves time and time again against ancient metamorphic rock. Are we running out of geographical/geological features on Islay to name our beloved malts after? Asking for a friend.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A hella big peaty dram. Beachside bonfire. Islay malt married to grape juice. Raspberry and orange. Fig spread. Ju-jubes. Seared scallops and bacon. Some sort of red wine-reduced savory meat sauce. A bit of unlit pipe tobacco.

Palate: A lot smoke, a fair bit of hickory. Fruit leather. Arrives juicy, develops some slight tannins around the mid palate. Purple grapes and plums. Figgy pudding. Sen-sens. Cough drops.

Finish: Long and smoky. A hint of smoked shellfish and some flinty notes as it fades.

Thoughts: A little top-heavy – or maybe just overly rambunctious – but well-built, nonetheless.
