Bardstown

OK, so 13,000+ citizens may not get you in the top tier of bustling metropolitans. But…if a city’s might and mojo were based on Bourbon however, well, Bardstown, Kentucky, would be NYC + LA combined.

The exceedingly charming and quaint town is a superpower of Bourbon production, being within 16 miles of 11 distilleries. Many of those whiskey makers being the big fish of the industry. Goes without saying, Bardstown is The Bourbon Town. And they’re proud of it, rightfully so. They have put together something quite special that embodies the special bonds between the town, its economic powerhouse, and the mutual respect between the distilleries themselves.

“The heart of bourbon lives in Bardstown, Kentucky, and the Bardstown Collection is the perfect way to tell the story of the legends, the bourbon pioneers, the modern-day innovators, and the town that truly bonds them together.” said Samantha Brady, Executive Director of Bardstown Tourism.

Six Distilleries. Six Unique Expressions. One Collection.

This header is the perfect mantra for the 2023 Bardstown Collection (BC), it being the second year for this special collaboration of distillery releases. Here’s the breakdown.

6 distilleries are participating. Each distillery has selected 3 unique barrels for its respective BC offering. Some have created a blend of all 3, some have gone the single barrel route making each barrel its own expression.

Their bourbon will then be bottled in custom packaging under the cohesive brand name “Bardstown Collection” displaying their own distillery’s secondary label signifying the six different editions of the collection. Every bottle is then housed in a custom box that celebrates the community and history of Bardstown.

The shared bottle design features iconic images from Bardstown, such as the historic My Old Kentucky Home. Gold-embossed blue boxes with ornate design and includes a colorful booklet that highlights distillery experiences, history, and the unique diversity of each participating distillery.

Master Distiller Quotes

“A collaboration like this is unheard of in the bourbon industry,” said Conor O’Driscoll, Master Distiller at Heaven Hill Distillery. “We are so pleased to be a part of the collaboration and camaraderie between so many Bardstown distilleries.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to join Bardstown Collection Bourbon for a second year in a row. This year, our limited-edition features Bourbons from 10, 11 & 12 millionth milestone barrels filled at James B. Beam Distilling Co., that have been left untouched for years until we found an opportunity worthy of using them. The result is a well-balanced and intricate bourbon. The Bardstown Collection is more than a delicious bourbon; it’s a celebration of the town’s history and camaraderie. It’s this fellowship of the folks living in Bardstown that kept Bourbon alive during the toughest times. They helped solve problems for the industry and assisted the community. It’s been such a strong part of my own family’s history and such a robust component of bourbon’s history – we’re excited to celebrate with this new release!” – Freddie Noe, 8th Generation Master Distillery of James B. Beam Distillery.

“Lux Row is proud to be the newest member of the Bardstown Bourbon Collection. For our first year, we are offering three single barrels, which are over six years old and bottled at 129 proof. These barrels feature our low rye bourbon recipe, my favorite recipe here at Lux Row. Since we’re not blending these single barrels, you can expect different flavor notes from each, but in general, our low rye recipe plays to the sweetness of the corn, so expect some vanilla and caramel notes, with a slight spice and a little dry fruit on the finish. Lux Row has been an active member of this community for several years now, and entering the collection lays claim to our roots here in the Bourbon Capital of the World.” Said John Rempke, Master Distiller at Lux Row Distillers.

“This collaboration is a representation of the incredible bourbon that Bardstown is built on,” said Lynne Dant, Chief Operating Officer and Distiller of Log Still Distillery. “We are honored to join the Bardstown Collection in creating a one-of-a-kind bourbon that directly impacts our community and raises the standard of the industry.”

The Palatella Family, owners of Preservation Distillery added, “Our family has loved being a part of the Kentucky Bourbon community for many decades. We’re part of the community. We’re honored to join our fellow bourbon distillers in Bardstown as we come together for an incredible cause — and great bourbon.”

Regarding brand selection for the FIRST EVER livestream drawing (3/31), we found this on the SBS site.

Buffalo

SBS is a Points System, with each point earned gaining additional entries for each drawing which will take place multiple times throughout the year.

POINT SYSTEM:

  • The point system is designed to reward longevity and engagement with the program, while offering more transparency in how barrels are allocated.
  • The total points a member has will equal the total number of entries in our barrel drawings.
  • Everyone automatically receives 1 point when they sign up for SBS and an additional 1 point for each year they are a member.
  • Up to 3 additional points can be awarded in a given year based on the activities offered to members throughout the year.
  • Points only reset upon the purchase of a barrel, and will stay at 0 for 1yr.

It also notes a vast differential of barrel pricing, varying $5,000 – $825,000. We can’t help but wonder what brand the latter would be?! State tax will be applied and vary per state.

CONSUMER ARRANGES THE RETAILER: Each selected member will need to arrange an agreement with a retailer. Sazerac notes they will not interject in this process. The site does note suggested pricing.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY EXPERIENCE: If selected, you will have the option to visit the stoic grounds of Buffalo Trace Distillery for a private tour and the opportunity to sample your barrel on distillery grounds (most brands, anyways). If a trip to BTD isn’t in the cards, Sazerac can ship samples to you. But yeah, probably best you “buy the ticket, take the ride” as Hunter S. Thompson wisely said;)

Whiskey fans across the Tri-State attended the second-annual John G. Carlisle Bottled-in-Bond (BIB) Competition and Celebration Friday, March 3, at Smoke Justis in Covington, KY.

For its second year, attendees once again crowned New Riff Distilling as the winner of its blind tasting event, which was held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 3. The two other finalists being Early Times BiB and Henry McKenna 10 Year BiB.

During the event, meetNKY and The B-Line®, in conjunction with Smoke Justis, led guests in a guided blind-pour tasting of three of the best BIB whiskey varietals in the country. Members of The B-Line® nominated the three whiskeys for the tastings (New Riff’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Early Time’s Bottled-In-Bond Bourbon and Henry McKenna’s 10-Year Single Barrel Bourbon), which patrons then cast votes for the best Bottled-In-Bond whiskey. Guests also sampled specially crafted charcuterie boards to complement each flavor profile.

“We are so honored to have been named as one of the best bonded whiskies two years in a row by those who know and love them,” said Mac Harris, New Riff distiller. “It’s always fun to be able to gather with friends and whiskey enthusiasts in a shared setting to celebrate the industry and the role our region continues to play in creating world-class spirits.”

New Riff also received the John G. Carlisle Award in 2022 at the inaugural Bottled-in-Bond event, which celebrated the 125th anniversary of the passage of the Bottled In Bond Act on March 3, 1897.

“This event is such a fun way to celebrate Covington’s strong historical ties as a leader in setting high standards for the whiskey industry,” said president and CEO of meetNKY, Julie Kirkpatrick. “We enjoyed being back at Smoke Justis to celebrate one of Kentucky’s signature industries. Congratulations to New Riff for taking home the John G. Carlisle Award for the second year in a row for their unique flavor profile and all-around stellar spirit.”

The 2023 BIB celebration kicked off with socializing in the bourbon bar at Smoke Justis, followed by welcome remarks and a short education on BIB and Covingtonian John G. Carlisle’s role in passing the Federal legislation.

Before Congressman Carlisle championed the passage of the BIB Act in 1897, much of the whiskey produced nationwide often included harmful additives like iodine, tobacco and even paint thinner. As a result of the Act, participating BIB distillers must put their products into federally bonded warehouses for at least four years and bottle at 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume). Additionally, owners must stipulate on the labels of their bottles where the whiskey is distilled and where it was bottled, if not at the same location where it’s distilled.

Secretariat

A Spectacle of Wonder

1973 – O.J. Simpson was the #1 running back that year, eclipsing 2,000 yards for the first time in league history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was MVP of the hardwood (for the Bucks). Pete Rose and Reggie Jackson were MLB MVP’s. All legendary athletes. All icons of their craft. But the most amazing athletic performer that year, hands down, ran on four power thrusting legs and weighed over 1,100 lbs of pure chiseled muscular wonder. This athlete would shatter records and do the unimaginable. This athlete was thoroughbred racehorse icon Secretariat, aka “Big Red”.

The bulging beast of speed didn’t just win the Kentucky Derby that year on his quest for Triple Crown record shattering glory. He did so being the first horse in history to win the Kentucky landmark race in under 2 minutes at 1:59:40. For reference, there has only been one other Kentucky Derby winner to break the 2 minute mark. And that came nearly 30 years after Secretariat.

Here’s a nice summation of Secretariat’s greatness, via Wikipedia:

Secretariat was a champion American thoroughbred racehorse who is the ninth winner of the American Triple Crown, setting and still holding the fastest time record in all three races. He is regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and his record-breaking victory in the Belmont Stakes, which he won by 31 lengths, is widely regarded as one of the greatest races in history. During his racing career, he won five Eclipse Awards, including Horse of the Year honors at ages two and three. He was nominated to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974.

In ’73, Secretariat made the cover of Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, and Newsweek.

FREAKISHLY BUILT: Secretariat was marvel of genetic engineering. His powerful long legs were said to produce a stride of over 24 feet. And to go with it, the heart of champion, literally. His heart was said to weigh ~22lbs, the average horse heart weighing 8.5 lbs. And already mentioned, he weighed over 1,100 lbs.

BBQ

Looking to map out your summer plans? Your kick off for destination dreams starts in Owensboro (KY), with a BBQ and Bourbon immersed weekend experience you’re not going to want to miss!

May 12 – 13 (Friday and Saturday), the riverfront city (~1hr 40 min west of Louisville) is hosting “BBQ & BARRELS”, a celebration and homage to the city’s sacred bedrock of “Western Kentucky BBQ” and Bourbon authenticity of which go back countless generations.

While the name of this event is new, the foundation certainly is not as it continues upon the storied tradition of Owensboro’s globally renowned Int’ Bar-B-Q Festival which goes back nearly 45 years. The storied tradition of Owensboro’s iconic BBQ legacy dates back centuries ago, to the early 1800’s.  It is the epicenter of “Western KY BBQ“.  You may have heard of “burgoo” or “mutton”, perhaps even tried it, but you haven’t really experienced it unless you’ve done it in Owensboro proper!

And with its strategic river positioning and abundantly fertile grain supply, Owensboro was a titan of the Whiskey Industry, with 20+ large scale distilleries prior to Prohibition.

ABOUT THE VENUE

An intimate, first class amphitheater smack dab in the middle of God’s country. We mean that literally in the sense as it’s just down the road from the Trappist monk monastery community Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani.

The amphitheater sits on the gorgeous 300+ acre campus of the dream turned reality Log Still Distillery in New Haven, KY, just outside Bardstown and founded by family members J.W. “Wally” Dant III, Lynne Dant, and Charles Dant (all cousins of the Bourbon Royalty “Dant” tree).
