As if enough awesome things haven’t happened in the “Bourbon Capital” of Bourbon Country – BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY. Now, the charming town seeped in Bourbon history and oozing with new Bourbon development can add another jewel to it’s amber crown – PENTHOUSE. “Brindiamo Penthouse” to be precise.

Located as any good penthouse should be, the Brindiamo Penthouse sits on the top floor of the iconic Spalding Hall in downtown Bardstown. The magnificent space, made possible by a generous $150,000 donation from the Brindiamo Group, a Nashville-based beverage alcohol industry consulting firm, promises to become a centerpiece for bourbon enthusiasts that reflects Bardstown’s status as the Bourbon Capital of the World.

Aside from being eye candy, it will serve as a multifunctional venue for the Bourbon Capital Alliance, offering an exclusive setting for member meetings, tastings and enhanced exposure to the nine partner distilleries. The space will also house the Bourbon Capital Academy’s purpose-built classroom, designed to provide an immersive bourbon education experience complete with sensory components, interactive elements and the renowned Taste of Bardstown flight board featuring delectable bourbons from partner distilleries.

The concept and design were meticulously crafted by the Cadillac of Bourbon Industry architectural firms – Joseph & Joseph + Bravura Architects. A multi-generational family operated design firm (circa 1908) headquartered in Louisville that has been the creator of more Bourbon-centric experiences then you can shake a stick at.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his excitement, stating“Kentucky’s signature bourbon industry is a vital part of the commonwealth’s continued success, whether that is through production, tourism or the numerous other opportunities the sector brings to our state. I am thrilled to see this new venue opening in Nelson County and the prosperity that bourbon continues to create throughout this region and statewide. Congratulations to the Bardstown community and everyone who had a hand in making this project possible.”

“We are thrilled to unveil the Brindiamo Penthouse to the world!” said Sam Lacy, Executive Director of the Bourbon Capital Alliance. “This extraordinary space embodies the essence of Bardstown’s bourbon heritage. Thanks to the generous donation from the Brindiamo Group and our partnership with the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, we have transformed the space into a premium meeting venue for the Bourbon Capital Guild and a cutting-edge classroom for our Bourbon Capital Academy.”

Jeff Hopmayer, Founder of the Brindiamo Group, expressed his support: “By contributing to the funding of this exceptional facility, Brindiamo Group is proud to be a part of advancing the Bourbon Capital Alliance, Kentucky Bourbon Festival, and the Bourbon Capital Academy. This dedicated space will serve as a focal point for raising awareness and knowledge about bourbon, further enhancing the global success of Kentucky bourbon.”

“We could not be more excited to help create and unveil the new Brindiamo Penthouse,” said David Mandell, Chairman of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. “This tremendously generous gift supports the bourbon industry, the KBF, and the community of Bardstown, Kentucky.”

Northern

Northern Kentucky Tourism (meetNKY) is celebrating the 5th Anniversary of its Bourbon travel destination creation “The B-Line” in proper style and fashion. Think of The B-Line as a collection of Bourbon distilleries and Bourbon bar/restaurant destinations that you certainly want to both add and check off your experiential list. A B-Line official stop must follow strict criteria of which is described in more detail below. Essentially, you can’t be any geek off the street.

To honor The B-Line’s half decade milestone and also National Bourbon Day (June 14th), they are adding 5 new Bourbon destinations:

  1. Pompilio’s (Newport, KY)
  2. Revival Vintage Bottle Shop (Covington, KY)
  3. Lisse Steakhuis (Covington, KY)
  4. Knowledge Bar & Social Room (Covington, KY)
  5. Caproni’s on the River (Maysville, KY)

“We launched The B-Line® in 2018 as a way to remind people that Northern Kentucky is the gateway to Bourbon Country,” said meetNKY President and CEO, Julie Kirkpatrick. “It celebrates the businesses that are passionate about being part of the Commonwealth’s rich bourbon heritage, representing and elevating Northern Kentucky on an international scale. There’s no better way to celebrate National Bourbon Day, a holiday created to recognize the high standards for distilling and celebrating ‘America’s Native Spirit’ than by adding these five new spots for visitors and locals to enjoy!”

The B-Line was created to help capture the bourbon-curious audience of millions of people who drive down I-75 or fly into CVG (Cinci Airport, actually in NKY) annually to visit Kentucky’s famed Bourbon Trail, of which there were 2.1 million in 2022.

“Revival is known for our vintage, rare and eccentric collection of spirits, which is a perfect addition for The B-Line®,” said Shannon Smith, co-founder of Revival Vintage Bottle Shop in Covington. “We look forward to showcasing what Northern Kentucky has to offer to bourbon fans who come to us from all over the world to experience our region’s own rare and eccentric nature.”

The new additions to The B-Line® bring the number of bourbon bars, craft distilleries and bourbon-centric restaurants throughout Covington, Newport, Independence, Sparta, Augusta and Maysville, Ky., to 23. A full list of participating establishments can be found on The B-Line’s website.

These spots are the real deal. Matter of fact, 12 B-Line stops were included on our AMERICA’S BEST BOURBON BARS 2022 LIST.

“On this B-Line stop expect to experience history, tradition, hospitality, a continued passion for family, a little Hollywood and great Italian food,” said lead bartender for Pompilio’s, Kristin Knollman. “The bar at Pompilio’s dates back to 1886, was the first bourbon bar in Northern Kentucky and houses a vast and growing bourbon selection. Once alcohol became legal again, Pompilio’s earned and still holds the first liquor license awarded in Kentucky after prohibition. Pompilio’s has provided visitors from around the region and nationally with classic cuisine and great spirits for over 90 years. With a heritage almost as rich as bourbon itself, this new B-Line stop is the perfect backdrop to create your own traditions.”

There are seven, strict criteria the new stops have to agree to in order to be a part of The B-Line®. These include things like fostering a culture around bourbon through continuing education and stocking certain types of bourbons. Restaurants must have at least 50 labels of bourbon (with a preference for Kentucky Bourbon) while bars must stock at least 100. Weekly bourbon-infused food and drink specials are also a requirement. For bars, they must also host bourbon-related events and offer specialty flights.

Distilleries must be a member in Good Standing with the Kentucky Distillers Association and be part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® or Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour®. Full details on qualifying for The B-Line® can be found on meetNKY’s website.

In conjunction with the new additions and National Bourbon Day festivities, The B-Line® also launched a new line of merchandise, designed by BLDG, including t-shirts featuring bourbon-centric puns, hats, and glasses. People can receive this new swag by completing their B-Line® passport by visiting each stop along Northern Kentucky’s bourbon trail. (Passports can be acquired at any official B-Line location.) To redeem a passport, visit meetnky.com/redeem.

Fireball

OK Fireball, we know what you’re up to here. We see what you’re doing. You’re having FUN! In the intricate world of Bourbon collectors, hey, this subculture of fanatics can sometimes take itself perhaps a little too #amn serious. There…we said it. And don’t get us wrong, we love the passion.

It’s interesting, ironic, and perhaps just refreshing to see the world’s most decorated American Whiskey making company (Sazerac) not take itself too seriously. They have every reason to. Yes, the same company that distills Pappy, BTAC, Weller, et et also has Fireball coursing through its spirit veins. And folks, let it be said, that Fireball money ain’t nothing to scoff at. Per Buffalo Trace Distillery’s ongoing $1.2B expansion conquest, you can bet Fireball is helping to pick up the tab.

Lets get back to the storyline at hand. Fireball has announced it has a special Father’s Day Limited Release in the works – Fireball Dragon Reserve. This is the brand’s FIRST EVER limited edition, bourbon barrel aged whisky. And to help fuel the “fire”, they’ve linked up with one of our fave comedy faces, Rob Riggle.

We get it, this certainly isn’t for everyone. But it’s nice to see some light heartedness these days in the industry.

Doing the quick math, a 53 gallon barrel can hold around 267 750ml bottles worth of juice. No need to factor in the angel’s share here, lol. This would equate to less than 3 barrels of Fireball aging “to perfection”;) Would we take the Pepsi Challenge to see how standard Fireball stacks up and compares to this limited firebreather? Sure, why not!

QUICK FACTS: Fireball Dragon Reserve

  • Limited Edition
  • 618 Bottle Release (Hint Hint: Father’s Day 6/18)
  • Dragon-Charred Barrels (Months Aged)
  • Rob Riggle: Honorary Master Distiller
  • SRP $19.99
  • SALE DATE: June 16th, 11am EST
  • PURCHASE HERE via ReserveBar

PRESS RELEASE from Sazerac:

Fireball Dragon Reserve has been resting in dragon-charred barrels (aka, American oak premium whiskey barrels) for months in preparation for this moment of spicing up Dad’s Day gifting and giving basic bourbon the boot. This exclusive product tastes like the iconic Fireball Cinnamon Whisky we all know and love, but imbued with a subtle smoky, oaky undertone sure to impress the most (or, least) discerning spirits lover.

“With Dragon Reserve, we asked ourselves: what does dad love, and how can we make that even better?” said Danny Suich, head dragon tamer and global brand director for Fireball. “We know whiskey drinkers are always looking for the hottest, most exclusive new offering, but most of those products are way too expensive. That’s why we created Dragon Reserve… because the best gifts don’t have to break the bank, but they should break convention and bring the heat!

To help bring this historic product to market, actor/comedian, father, and professional dad joke-maker Rob Riggle was crowned the first honorary Fireball Master Distiller. In his obviously highly coveted role, Rob helped shape the final result of Dragon Reserve through rigorous product testing and unwavering quality control. The result, according to Master Distiller Riggle? “Absolute fire.”

“Just like Fireball, Rob is known for bringing the laughs and spicing up anything he touches,” said Suich. “It was a no-brainer to make him our honorary Master Distiller for Dragon Reserve – his deadpan delivery and rebellious, irreverent personality was the perfect combination to bring this anything-but-boring product to life.”

While Fireball Dragon Reserve was not [entirely] conceived as a way to convince dads to throw a Fireball shot back with their adult kids… it’s still likely to get the job done. A more nuanced and refined version of classic Fireball, Dragon Reserve brings the heat – and ignites the fun – for Father’s Day celebrations and beyond. Plus, dads love rare whiskey collectibles, making Fireball Dragon Reserve a covetable must-have. Speaking of the Father’s Day holiday on 6/18, that’s also how many bottles of Dragon Reserve will be available for pre-order, 618 bottles.

Per Rob Riggle:

Fireball

“Attention Children 21+: what dad wants for Father’s Day is some peace and quiet so he can enjoy his new favorite whisky, Fireball Dragon Reserve. All jokes aside, Fireball has a huge legion of fans who we know are going to love toasting pops on Father’s Day after he’s cut the grass, cleaned his car, or napped through hours of golf on TV (you know, dad stuff). Or Fireball lovers can buy one for themselves instead – I won’t tell dad, just like you didn’t tell him about that party you threw at the house when he went out of town that one spring break.”

Fireball Dragon Reserve will be available in select states at www.dragonreserve.fireballwhisky.com for $19.99 beginning at 11 am EST on June 16th. Bottles will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

New York Times BestsellerPappyland” has just made its paperback debut, just in the nick of time for that Father’s Day gift you need.

Author and ESPN Senior Writer, Wright Thompson, spent an extensive amount of time with the Van Winkle family capturing their fascinating journey through American Whiskey history.

Below is exert from us when the book initially debuted. Cheers as we hope you give this book a read!

“We make fine Bourbon at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but alwaysFine Bourbon – Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. (1874 – 1965)

Pappyland
1935. Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. Opening year of Stitzel-Weller Distillery.

Pappyland is not a “smooth” one dimensional sipper. It’s complex.  It has layers. Just like a fine bourbon should, damnit.

Does it deep dive into Bourbon’s fascinating history at large? Sure.  Does it use the scalpel for an in-depth look at the world’s most coveted Bourbon brand? Of course.  And hey, that alone is certainly enough to keep eyes glued downward and pages turning rapidly as shots at a college bar.

Pappyland

But perhaps the magic ingredient, what makes this book truly stand out is NOT the glamour and allure of the brand.  Quite the opposite. It’s the author’s sensational ability to remove the cape and capture the vulnerability of one man’s struggle through a long Odyssey-esque epic journey to save his family’s legacy.  To convey the importance of family.  To know what struggle is and to somehow come out on the other side and emerge victorious.  To be human.   This is the story of Julian Van Winkle III.

Julian Van Winkle III. Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery President.

The author, Wright Thompson, Senior writer for ESPN and southerner from Mississippi, “had” to spend part of three years studying, sipping, and learning from Julian Van Winkle III in preparation for the book.  Tough life.

Julian VW III and Pappyland author Wright Thompson

Julian’s grandfather, Julian Sr. “Pappy”, opened the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in 1935 just outside of Louisville.  On his passing in 1965, Julian Jr. took over but was forced to sell the distillery in 1972.  When Julian Jr. passed in 1981, his son Julian III became president of the family brand during a time when likely the last thing you wanted to own was a Bourbon Company.  The American Whiskey Industry had been on a traumatic downward spiral going back over a decade prior.

1958. Julian VW Jr., Julian VW III, Julian “Pappy” VW Sr. at Stitzel-Weller Distillery
2003. Julian III and son Preston VW.

So how in the world did Pappy get to where it is today?! Well, you’ll just have to get the book and read about it😉

PRESS RELEASE From Bourbon with HeART

Bourbon with HeART, Kentucky’s first and only arts-focused bourbon charity, announced its newest art exhibit, “Bowtied Together.” The exhibit will take place at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville (140 N Fourth St.) throughout April and will showcase 50 wooden bowties, hand-carved out of bourbon barrels and transformed into wearable art by 25 Kentucky-area artists.

Bourbon with HeART, founded by Morgan Hancock, prides itself on tying together artists from various backgrounds and areas of expertise to create works that are as unique as the artists who design them. Like the perfect bourbon pairing, “Bowtied Together” takes wooden bowties, hand-carved out of old bourbon barrels by US Military veterans from Cruise Customs, and marries them with local artists to create beautiful art for many to enjoy.

“We’re thrilled to showcase the talent of our local artists and honor the service of our veterans with this unique exhibit,” said Hancock, a US Army Veteran herself. “Our goal is to use the influence and popularity of bourbon to raise funds, awareness, and education around the local art community. We’re committed to providing better access and first-class arts experiences to every person in Kentucky.”

Cruise Customs provides bourbon barrel products carved by veterans. Hancock explained, “As a veteran, I appreciate the work Cruise Customs does of providing therapy through this craft for those suffering from PTSD. I connect with their mission – they share that bourbon barrels once had a great purpose. Veterans once had a great purpose. Through this work they are helping them find a new one.”

The exhibit opened April 1st at the Galt House, the official hotel of the Kentucky Derby, and will run throughout the city’s famous Derby season. Each of the 25 artists was given two bowties to transform. The bowties were purchased via sponsorships from local businesses. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, for which Morgan Hancock was named “Visionary of the Year” for 2023. Attendees will also be invited to vote for their favorite bowtie design. The winning artist will be awarded a cash prize along with a donation to the charity of their choice.

Uncle Nearest Distillery (Shelbyville, Tennessee) is no stranger to setting records. Est 2017 by Fawn Weaver, the brand was the first African American whiskey owned label to hit the market. It is now the best selling overall Spirit in America by an African American. Now, a new global record is being set on the distillery grounds – WORLD’S LONGEST BAR.

Humble Baron opened its doors March 23rd on the grounds of Uncle Nearest Distillery, equipped with a 518-foot-long showpiece bar that wraps stunningly around the establishment’s interior. Per Guinness World Records, it’s officially the longest bar, edging out the previous 25 year holder Beer Barrel Saloon (405 feet, 10 inches) out of Put-It-Bay, Ohio.

“Humble Baron is a place where everyone has a seat at the table,” said Humble Baron’s inspiration, Keith Weaver. “We want our guests to pull up a seat at the world’s longest bar and enjoy some amazing music over a craft cocktail or a bite to eat and engage with those around them. Humble Baron reflects my varied music tastes and will bring all types of people, with all interests and backgrounds, together.”

LIVE MUSIC: Featuring both an indoor and outdoor stage, separated by a glass wall, Humble Baron will have capacity for 15,000 guest shows and will feature live music weekly.

Elite Bar Program

The bar program was crafted in partnership with Gin & Luck, the hospitality company behind renowned cocktail institution Death & Co., with Black-owned spirits taking center stage. Signature libations include the “Queen’s Gambit,” featuring Sorel Liqueur, Hella Cocktail Co. Apple Blossom Bitters, local premium Tennessee whiskey, pineapple gomme, and lemon juice, as well as the “Dear Fawn,” which is a spin on a favorite classic cocktail, the espresso martini, swapping the usual vodka for local premium Tennessee whiskey. Assistant Director of Beverage, DeAndre A. Jackson, leads the bar’s cocktail innovation.

Elite Culinary Program

For its culinary offerings, James Beard nominee and critically acclaimed chef and television host Chef G. Garvin has crafted a menu of sophisticated yet familiar dishes, including the restaurant’s signature Nashville Hot Shrimp and Grits and Snow Crab Claws sauteed in brown butter and sage. Renowned Atlanta Chef Jay Craddick will helm the kitchen as Executive Chef, bringing more than 18 years of experience and a passion for innovative Southern cuisine to Humble Baron.

Namesake Inspiration

Keith Weaver, husband of Fawn Weaver, is the inspiration behind this dazzling hall of hospitality.

“Although the vision of Humble Baron comes from the incredible mind of my favorite person on earth, I had the great honor of naming it,” said Fawn Weaver of her husband and partner. “Keith’s storied career as an executive vice president for one of the largest movie studios in the world and one of the highestranking Black executives in Hollywood for more than 20 years, causes people to look at him as a baron. But he’s remained the humblest person I’ve ever known throughout his impressive career.”
